International Penny Farthing Racer.

Commutes via unicycle, kick scooter (not electric), "halfbike", tallbike or penny farthing.

I also like minimalist tech: non-smartphones, unusual + digital watches.

I feel very strongly that if you use a "free service" and enjoy it you should donate to its up keep.

@navigium @th@social.v.st we also have other transport options. You could try an #OrdinaryBicycle. Though this one also doesn't have a brake! Still, you know what they say, "Brakes only slow you down!" 🤪 #PennyFarthing

This is Garmin's "body battery" measurement, so basically my smart watch saying I am tired from thinking about delayed trains. 🤣

Once the race started though it was pretty nice. Here is another old picture, with one of my team Norway team mates. He beat me in the end. Indeed this picture is the basis for my avatar [made by @joel@fosstodon.org]

OK, OK I admit it. This was not a lucky find! 🤣 @th@social.v.st will soon be back to Oslo to sail the Draken back to her home port. I knew this. Indeed I'm hoping we can unicycle together before he leaves (yes he is also a unicyclist, obviously!) P.S. I cycled down to have a closer look.

OK this is the craziest shit I have experienced on a train. We all had to get off but leave our bags on the train, then get on a different train, go two stops and then get back on the first train to rejoin our bags. I shit you not. 🤣

The robotic, Anglicised announcement as we stop at Middelfart, in Denmark is hilarious. They must be pronouncing it like that on purpose or something, just to make people smile.

I am capable of a lot more than this. I have unicycled over 100km on a couple of occasions but not yesterday. I was not in my best form. That was enough.

I strongly considered cycling up Grefsenkollen but I haven't cycled much for the last few weeks (I've been on holiday) and was starting to feel it in my legs (I also already cycled 12km earlier that day). It was the right call. Grefsenkollen would have added another 5.4km (3.4 miles) but more than that it would have added 181m (593 ft) of elevation gain. I knew my body was tired because I fell off once in Nydalen and made another close mistake later. I would have been shot if I had done that.

RE: https://mastodon.au/@isol/116858741238893915 Which is why unicycling uphill feels much easier than bicycling uphill at the same gear ratio.

This is part way through a trip from Ireland back to Norway using one ferry (Dublin to Holyhead, Wales), followed by trains all the way to Sweden and then a bus. It is massively more complex (and expensive) than flying but the thing is I do give a shit so feel like I have to try. But governments need to work to make such journeys work better so that they can be a more viable alternative to flying. It's very hard for me to recommend others copy me given all the current pitfalls and price.

Oh, one other thing I did find annoying with the child's daily ticket is it is a QR code, which is fine in and of itself but when you bring your phone close to the QR reader it triggered the NFC Payment wallet on my phone as well. I was not double charged but worried I might be, so I disabled NFC for my phone and paid for my own adult ticket with Garmin pay on my watch.

Netherlands, Rotterdam was pretty good at least for adults and older children as you can just tap debit/credit cards (or Apple, Google, Samsung, Fidesmo, .etc). For younger children you can use the RET app to buy a daily ticket but I later realised that if you are just making a couple of journeys, it is easier and can be cheaper to use another payment card and pay as though they are adults. Like all systems that use payment cards directly you need enough for all members of your party.

Using busses in Reykjavik I could do the touch payment thing with a regular payment card or Apple/Google/Samsung/Garmin/Fidesmo. You can also use an app but again timing bringing the QR code was annoying and seemed to slow the whole boarding process up.

@th@social.v.st again, maybe you do not need to disable and they are doing something clever (prioritising QR and not taking a payment if both appear at the same time) but there is no way I could know this. Another annoying thing is one of my cards (N26 bank) used by my older child was detected as two cards, with a message that I cannot present two cards at once. This was OK for me as I always multiple cards, so they could just use another one, but would be a pain for people with only one card.

I have enough unicycles for everyone! 🥳
