Retraction Watch verifies the judgment against Carla Rossi, in favor of Peter Kidd, in the long-running #receptiogate scandal. Rossi has to pay back the equivalent of $51,000 for fraud in obtaining grants for two plagiarized books, and is banned from receiving grants for 5 years. She is trying to spin, as a victory, the Federal Administrative Court of Switzerland's ruling that in a 3rd plagiarized book, "“only a small portion of the scientific work was taken from third parties without proper citation”. https://retractionwatch.com/2026/05/05/court-orders-historian-to-repay-grant-funding-for-pattern-of-plagiarism-in-books/ Since Rossi tried to claim that she invented the "Wayback Method"-- which involves looking at the Internet Archive's "Wayback Machine" to find the text of a publication -- it's a beautiful irony that the court dismissed her thin excuse that complainants looked at an "altered" copy of her book by going to to the Wayback Machine and comparing it with the version that she herself posted.

Aldhelm was already growing on me, but this is awesome: (from wikipedia) "He was now an old man, but he showed great activity in his new functions [as bishop]. This included going into public places where he would sing hymns and passages from the gospels interspersed with bits of clowning to draw attention to his message. 2/2 Of course Ross is spamming multiple websites to flood the internet with Trumpian spin about how the 3rd book ruling completely exonerates her of all charges, which is a blatant lie. It sounds like she has appeals left, but with any luck she'll have to pay it back and may face fraud judgments. NPR's story on the newly released #epstein files that allege Trump raped a 14-year-old in 1983 does two important things that the NYT has bizzarely chosen not to do. 1) include a link to the pages (duh!) (Here's the link: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/27774249-new-epstein-files-related-to-trump/) 2) check to see if that's all of them. (It's not; DOJ released 16 more pages, but 37 are still missing.) The NYT was either grossly incompetent here, or actively trying to bury the story. https://www.npr.org/2026/03/05/nx-s1-5737562/justice-department-missing-epstein-files-trump

@MikeFromLFE@cupoftea.social @joyce@hcommons.social To be clear, I know your distinction between smog and fog is accurate - I just think the wrong word is used in the colloquial phrase "London Fog." Per wikipedia, smog was coined in the early 20th c. particularly to describe a "pea soup fog" aka a "London particular" or "London Fog." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pea_soup_fog It goes on to say that a 1956 law banned coal burning in Lonfon after 4,000 died in 1952.

Here are the newly released 16 pages of interviews with the young woman who said Trump raped her when she was 14. https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/27774249-new-epstein-files-related-to-trump/ NPR counted 53 pages that were missing, so you can bet that these are the 16 LEAST damaging. Under pressure (and a legal requirement), the Trump administration released FBI files on a woman who accused Trump and Epstein of raping her when she was a teenager (per NYT). Journalists going through the big release of files noticed an index describing the pages, but the actual pages were missing. The DOJ now claims that they were "mistakenly" marked as duplicates. As if pages alleging Trump raping teenagers were routine and common. Maybe they are? https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/05/us/politics/trump-epstein-interviews-woman-justice-department.html

Here's a tricky puzzle! This section of Greek text appeared in in the (Latin) Einsiedeln itinerary, Einsiedeln MS 326 (9th c.) amidst a bunch of Latin inscriptions and poems. It's Greek-ish, maybe Coptish, but we can't assume the scribe understood Greek as opposed to sort of drawing a picture of some Greek words. The word spacing seems off. Something about petra (either rock, or Peter, or both?) And what are the twisty Ys with a dot in the martini glass? Something like maybe "τον θεον λογον θενσε χρυσω την θεοτα υπτον πετραν εν η βεβηκωσ ουκλονυμ" ??? @histodons@fedigroups.social @medievodons@fedigroups.social#greek #ancientgreek

@joshua @gleick You aren't even reading our responses, so I'll say the same thing again and then goodbye. No, that is not how any of this works. Before Trump, the DOJ has never "at a minimum leaked" information, nor has it sought to punish the President's opponents. (Well, briefly under Nixon but it was a huge scandal leading to both new laws and administrative reforms.) They only prosecuted people when they had an impeccable mountain of evidence that almost guaranteed conviction, and the conviction rates for federal prosecutors were 90% or more. There were many cases where they had strong evidence against people of all parties, but weren't certain that a jury would convict, and as a result they did nothing. Trump changed all of that, and now not only are many people charged by Trump DOJ being acquitted, but grand juries are refusing to indict many of them in the first place. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED until Trump blatantly corrupted the DOJ and ruined their credibility. Goodbye!

2/2 So Trump is threatening China with denying Xi a meeting with Trump: Iran is offering them a financial windfall that would vault China past the US in the global economy. Further, Trump's fairly obvious goal is for the US to control Iran's oil as well as Venezuela's, which would give him massive power over China's oil-import-dependent economy (and everyone else, to). Should they help him achieve that, or help Iran maintain its independence while improving their global standing? Not a tough call, from China's POV. @joshua@social.mbbc.us @gleick@mas.to The DOJ -- again, before Trump, not under him -- was famous for not bringing charges against defendants unless there was overwhelming proof of guilt and near-certainty that a jury would convict. Biden's DOJ did not "go after" Trump, and it wasn't Biden's -- DOJ has always been independent, until Trump. DOJ prosecutors brought charges against Trump after they amassed overwhelming proof of his guilt. He had illegally retained documents all over Mar-a-lago, denied he had them, and the FBI found them. That's not "going after" someone, it's investigating a criminal and bringing charges when they're obviously guilty.

This may be due to vegetarians being deficient in key nutrients such as B vitamins, the team suggested. Vegans had a 40% higher risk of bowel cancer when compared with meat eaters."

The ICE agent who killed a legally qualified worker in Maine the other day has a long history of mental illness, PTSD and violence against family members. The military rejected him but was so desperate for recruits that they encouraged him to go off his bipolar meds for a year and reapply. And he did, successfully.

Imagine your worst case scenario of abusive ICE agents and this reality ... is worse. However creative or florid your imagination is.

Do you know Adriano Russo's work (2016 dissertation & articles re "Florilegium Thuaneum", the underlying anthology of Vienna 277, Paris. Lat. 8071 and others?

He argues (among other things) that Vienna 277 was copied at Lyon with new texts - Juvenal, Persius, Catullus 62, Pervigilium Veneris - into a lost intermediate text = ξ, during the time of Florus and Mannon. And THAT codex then traveled back to Francia where it was copied as Paris. Lat. 8071 by an incompetent scribe c. 870.

Any thoughts? Seemed persuasive to me but you know much more.

@gleick That article itself is half a cover up -- maybe their attempt to be "balanced"? I say that because 1) it completely ignores the page count of suppressed documents. NPR reported that 53 pages relating to the 13-15 year old girl's allegations against Trump were not released. The follow up release only produced 16 of this, as NPR reported; the NYT just says "they released the reports after complaints." 2) the article ends with a highly suspect anecdote that after Epstein was arrested in the first time, Trump called to congratulate them and say "Everybody knew he was doing that." The article doesn't say anything about Trump's failure to report this egregious felony, or any attempt to interview him for evidence -- even though he had told a reporter for a printed article that "Epstein likes the younger ones" several years before.
