On this day in 1973, the Chilean army, backed by the CIA, overthrew the democratic government of Salvador Allende.
They installed a dictatorship that lasted until 1988. Thousands were killed and disappeared.
Keep this is mind when you hear USians talk about freedom and democracy.

@johl@mastodon.xyz @_elena@mastodon.social Congratulations on your decision to learn German!
As a speaker of Latin-based languages, you’ll probably be annoyed by the absence of structure and order.
My advice would be to learn the basics, but after that, not to spend too much time on grammar and the gender of nouns. Hardly any foreign speaker gets these right, and you’re perfectly understandable either way.
Have fun!

RE: https://mastodon.online/@mullvadnet/116957571811403553
Mullvad is all about freedom of speech, e.g. giving lots of money to Nazis.
You may exercise your own freedom by not giving Mullvad any money, because you know they’re gonna give some of it to Nazis.
It’s not complicated.

@smveerman@zug.network I appreciate the precision, but I’m afraid the minister thinks in headlines, and headlines only.
Anyone who’s ever used a train station knows this is bullshit. German transport ministers have sell-by dates in the range of lettuce, so the parties aren’t sending their best.

Love to see people posting about the Odyssey while declaring “no spoilers”.
It’s pretty much the oldest story we have! Have you been living under a rock for the last 3000 years??!

Had my closest friend over last night. It’s perhaps the least urgent of all problems, but we talked about how middle age, for family men like us, is a new phase in life, and needs to be approached as such.
The most urgent needs are addressed, and the big decisions are taken. Now we need to decide what we’re going to do with the rest of our lives.
It’s a solvable problem. But if we act like the solution will come by itself, we’re asking for trouble.

@futurebird@sauropods.win at this point we can just skip the hospitals and the qualifications theatre entirely, and go back to paying back-alley dealers cash in hand
the care should be no worse, and at least we cut out the middle men

@lechimp@mastodon.pub.solar there’s an old saying that in academia, the fights are so vicious because there’s so little at stake.
That feels relevant here.
This carries echoes of 10-15 years ago, when we argued about codes of conduct for FOSS communities.
Everyone with a job at a reputable company had already signed on to far more restrictive terms; but somehow not being sexist in FOSS was still a step too far for some.

@malcircuit@thingy.social Great description!
I would just add that anti-problem solvers exercise power by choosing which (and whose) problems they allow to be solved.
It follows that being an anti-problem solver isn’t a character trait. It’s a technique, and deploying that technique is a choice.

By useful, I mean stuff like “summarize the main points from these 300 excruciatingly boring tender requirements, so I know what to look for in a detailed analysis” or “read through my inbox and highlight the 5 most important topics from the last month, along with their corresponding action items”.
I’m a product manager, not a coder or engineer. I rarely operate on stricter criteria than “mostly correct”, “good enough” or “probably wrong”.

While the shelf itself is omnipresent in older toilets, I don’t think it’s widely known here that you’re supposed to check your turds.

@lechimp@mastodon.pub.solar yeah, probably not.
Unlike codeberg’s TOS, this is a multi-million $$$ project. Which in theory means that disputes are resolved through litigation; and in practice, that both sides put all their various disagreements on a big pile, and then the lawyers look at who’s got the bigger pile, and money gets moved until it’s all evened out.

- Can I just turn any docs file in our internal git repo into slides? For shits and giggles?

@_elena@mastodon.social @johl@mastodon.xyz A friend’s father once told me this story about a simultaneous translator at a UN-like international gathering. The speaker, in German, launched into a sentence that grew increasingly complex, and just didn’t seem to end.
The translator grew increasingly nervous: he couldn’t translate the sentence without knowing the verb! Finally, he opened the window of the translation booth and shouted at the speaker: “The verb, asshole!!!”
