@NullNoMore@mastodon.social @briankrebs@infosec.exchange These instructions? https://corsirosenthalfoundation.org/resources/how-to-build-a-corsi-rosenthal-box-usa/

@Edent@mastodon.social For anyone reading this who thinks "you can't buy plugin solar panels from Lidl!" here's a link to Lidl Germany where that is definitely a thing: https://www.lidl.de/h/stromerzeuger/h10031840?pageId=10067761%2F10067532%2F10031840&sort=price

@beaiouns@is.nota.live @ifixcoinops@retro.social Scotland is one of the few parts of the western world where cola is only the second most popular soda. Last time I was there, the hotel had two vending machines for soda and one of them solely contained Irn Bru. (I'm not Scottish - I'm from the other end of Britain - but I do drink Irn Bru from time to time.)

@bjn @BashStKid @ChrisMayLA6 @stekopf You can store 5MWh in a single 20' container BESS. https://ffdpower.com/5mwh-bess/ That's similar to having 2000 tonnes of gravity storage with a 1000m shaft. Further, because the UK is moist, most mineshafts will flood if not actively pumped. You're unlikely to find a dry 1000-metre-deep hole; 100 metres might even be a stretch. (The energy needed to pump a tonne of water out of a shaft is the same as the energy stored by a tonne at the same depth ...)

@brunogirin@mastodon.me.uk @FediThing@social.chinwag.org Ooh,just remembered my alt account isn't following @CountBinface@mastodon.world yet. I *can* follow him twice!

@smallsolar I've got a Stream Ultra too. Currently have a single panel lying out on my patio (not as a table, but it could be!) while I work out how I'm going to mount it and it's three friends on my shed roof.

@Edent@mastodon.social Also, I need to tag @balkonsolar@freiburg.social here. He's been promoting this in Germany for some time, and wrote to Ed Milliband last year to try and get some movement on it in the UK.

@Workshopshed@mastodon.scot looking good! We managed something similar, also including an EV. Our gas bill for the month was about £25.

@smallsolar it's just plugged in, it's not in its final location yet and I wanted to check it wasn't DOA. It does what it does well enough. The Ecoflow app has a few quirks and doesn't always report what you think it's reporting, but I'm getting used to them. I don't have an Ecoflow-compatible energy monitor or smart plugs (my existing ZigBee kit isn't on their compatibility list AFAICT) but I've set up a manual demand profile and the Ultra follows it well enough.

@Anoia Must've been a freelancer. The Guild would never be so sloppy.

@etchedpixels@mastodon.social @smallsolar@techhub.social Sorry, thought I'd replied here but now see I didn't! I fully agree that for a larger system it makes sense to have a professional installation. I've already got a rooftop PV system (2012 vintage, relatively low efficiency but earning FIT money). My Ecoflow kit is a fun experiment that also fulfils an offer I made to my wife to make her art shed off-grid-capable (albeit only during the months she doesn't need heating).

@neil Do your two services work together, so the more dramatic the music (and hence the more important-to-the-plot the on-screen events) the more likely it is that silhouettes will appear to obscure your view?

@inkican@mastodon.social ooh! I used to enjoy reading Byte back in the 80s. Will have to take a wander down memory lane.

@revk@toot.me.uk @Walrus@toot.wales @Edent@mastodon.social All well and good, but folk then start to complain to their suppliers (and from there to the DNO) that, on sunny summer days, their solar inverter has shut down and they've missed out on savings/earnings. The DNO limit / permission process is designed to keep export low enough that the local network rarely reaches 258V and they don't get deluged with complaints from their customers. 2/2

@brianbilston I didn't expect to need the Green Cross Code when reading poetry!

@revk@toot.me.uk that's definitely sub-optimal.

@revk@toot.me.uk @Walrus@toot.wales @Edent@mastodon.social I'm not an electrical engineer so this might not be the whole story. As you add generation to the local distribution network, and assuming there's not enough local demand to consume it all, the voltage rises. Eventually it gets to 258V (230+12%) which is the upper tolerance limit. At that point, local generation starts to shut down. 1/2

@fratermus@vmst.io I'm here with apps from Solis, Ecoflow and Solarman (plus one from my energy company) and feel very much seen by this toot.

@Tattooed_Mummy@beige.party that really is an expensive slug!

@JenJen@mastodon.art ooh, nice boots! Genuine Converse? I'm not entirely sure what I think of the aesthetics of the rear zips (might've worked better in black?) but I'm sure they make putting them on and taking them off again much easier.

@neil I'm also concerned that the IPO for my diesel-to-porkchop conversion startup might be adversely affected. Won't anyone think of the techbros?

@AoifeGreenhamIllustrations@mastodon.ie That's a fair comment! Most of the things I try to fix are more complicated than that - I don't always succeed but I usually learn something along the way 🙂

@ThompsonArt@mastodon.art Have you and @owlsintowels@mas.to met?

@Philsturgeon@mastodon.green @TheGuardian@mstdn.social I was quite disappointed by that article. It's the sort of thing that convinced me to cancel my subscription. That and the adverts.

@raymaccarthy @FediThing The longwave broadcast band used to be a thing of wonder, but there's not many stations left. Here in the UK we used to listen to Atlantic 252 from Ireland if we wanted a change from BBC R4.

@paulbailey@mas.to @davidallengreen@mastodon.green Blow up a pirate ship, accidentally capture their escape pod in your fuel scoops, then have to do something with the "slaves" you've now been credited with. A moral lesson for our times, I think.

@ariaflame@masto.ai @ossobuffo@triangletoot.party @petergleick@fediscience.org In the UK you can have a certified professional install solar on your rooftop for about £1 (US$1.30) a watt. It gets cheaper if you've space for more than 6kW. Payback is 7-8 years despite our cloudy, rainy weather.

@owlsintowels@mas.to do you think the owl learned it's lesson and won't try that again? Or will it be back next week for another round of deskunkification?

@JenJen@mastodon.art "Who saw this one coming?" On Kickstarter, no-one can see you coming ... (Sorry, I'll get my coat.)

@nimro@hachyderm.io @thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io The solar power part looks like the IEA's annually-updated World Energy Outlook projections. I don't immediately recognise the CCS data but suspect that's from the IEA too; here's a recent report of theirs; compare "announced" to "operational". https://www.iea.org/reports/ccus

More info here, including photos of the installation in the dark: https://www.photorama-project.eu/from-landfill-to-artwork-discussion-with-judith-fegerl-on-photovoltaics-and-artistic-approaches-to-the-energy-transition-and-circularity/

£20 was an overestimate, it seems. How does £16.15 grab you? Collection from somewhere near Gatwick airport. https://ebay.us/m/xSQgEx

@AoifeGreenhamIllustrations@mastodon.ie I've replaced the NiCd battery in my cheapish Braun Oral B electric toothbrush. It meant unsoldering the old one and soldering on the new one, which seemed "easy" to me but I don't know if that meets your threshold. And, while I've never used them, I can see compatible biodegradable heads available to buy from eg. booheads. Edit: battery replacement is like this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qgGlV_XbfYY
