Just watched citizen Kane for the first time, and it’s a great film even so many years on!
Beautifully shot, and a good story of a sad child becoming a sad man.

I really like the idea of having depth. I use "stickies" a lot, but I find in practice they're a bit annoying because I want them to live in their own layer.
Widgets such as plasma or the mac widgets don't quite solve this because they're more rigid "permanent" layers and not floating or context aware.

I didn't really do portraits before, but I've done a few with the RB67 and I love how it looks so much.
I tried so far the Delta and the HP5+, and I find the delta grain too soft.I want to try a color film next.

Ah, disappointed to learn that KDE is also going the path of hamburger menus vs actual menu bars, so anything kirigami does not export an actual global menu.
Kirigami apps have the same "mobile inspired" desktop approach that I think sucks on desktop and is the GNOME approach, and increasingly the macOS approach as well.

“because Google Search is so popular, it’s no longer allowed to improve” is such a disingenuous take that has to ignore the effects of accumulation of power and capital, the effect Google has had on the open web, AND assume that Google search has gotten better in the last few years.
Maybe if companies weren’t anti competitive monopolies, they wouldn’t be fined by the EU

Just read Byung-Chul Han’s The Burnout Society.
It’s sixteen years old, but I think it’s a great description of the last couple of decades.
I wonder now how this “achievement” focused society is changing. Because of AI, this concept of can is even more ridiculous.
So many people are rushing to do more because they can, but it’s pretty meaningless. The forces that push for this achievement culture are very clearly a joke.

@glyph@mastodon.social On macOS I tried GrandTotal, which I liked. It tiers features on different subscription levels, and for my use freelancing the lowest worked well. The features for mail, reminders, and time tracking are through integrations with other clients.
I also tried invoiceninja which is web based, didn’t like it as much, but isn’t bad. It should have all those features.

@Madic@chaos.social @ruben@chaos.social this seems to be the way! I have to use it for work, but then I’m mostly in the terminal so I don’t feel it as much.
For my personal stuff I’m using Linux 90% of the time, so I’ll just keep minimizing macOS usage

Another example for a remote only team is that everyone would idle in ventrilo while independently doing work.
This was a great way to just talk.

@liaizon@social.wake.st Honestly that company has been pushing and pushing how much they can squeeze the developers that made their platforms successful, and they let them because so many app developers consider themselves temporarily embarrassed Steve Jobses.
Meanwhile, the desktop that built a reputation for strong human computer interaction, descends into an ad billboard

I think visualizing the navigation wouldn't be impossible. This is a rough idea, but I think it could work.
The more layers, the harder to navigate it gets, but I think that reflects the complexity of that setup.

For a while I used the fastmail calendar offering, which worked well for my wife and myself. Now I have a self hosted baikal, which is a bit more annoying for initial setup. The invites experience anywhere outside Google will feel off if you’re inviting mostly Google users, but either is worth a try, for invites and rsvps I had no trouble.

While layers "above" wouldn't be visible. I can imagine a "peek" below shortcut being handy to compare with the layer below.
Either for onion skinning, reading back, comparing values, etc.

For example. At one of the places I worked, the office wrapped around this garden.
It was easy to see if there was someone outside smoking or having a break, so our breaks tended to organically fall together.
This was never designed or expected, but these breaks that combined people from different teams and seniorities were one of the biggest sources “good ideas”or information sharing.
I wonder how this has manifested in other places.
