@masek@infosec.exchange I also was there in the early 90s. I cannot recall anything ever being subsidized to the tune of trillions by non-government money like AI has been.

@masek@infosec.exchange Except it's not cheap, it's subsidized...

@masek@infosec.exchange Yes, I remember all of those things very well. I do not remember trillions being spent, especially in such a tiny time frame, almost entirely from private equity and other private sources. Furthermore, while losses were great for many of those things, the estimated losses for AI are about 20:1, which again I don't recall ever happening at that rate.

@crankylinuxuser@infosec.exchange @tante@tldr.nettime.org Policies do not imply perfect compliance. If perfect detection and compliance were a requirement to write a policy we could not have any policies at all. They are a statement of intent and community rules. When someone is found in violation, they provide the course of action to take.

@crankylinuxuser@infosec.exchange @tante@tldr.nettime.org Weird how playing dumb means their policy is pointless. I am pretty certain you understand this is generative coding, ie: using Claude and the like. Trying to blur the line by adopting the industry "lets go and relable existing, established technologies as AI to confuse everyone" only marks you as a shill for the industry, and not someone having an intellectually honest conversation wtih real questions.

@Bonfire 1) Were decisions made about AI code contributions? 2) Is there any path to migrating a Mastodon instance to Bonfire? Continues to look good!

The USA has far more registered Democrats than Republicans, the only reason we would lose elections by running as leftists is if Democrats are more comfortable with the far right than with the left.

@RickiTarr@beige.party Plus the holding company that owns all of them also apparently owns several VPN providers, including SurfShark and NordVPN which also sell the illusion of privacy.

@igalia@floss.social @bkardell@toot.cafe @Meyerweb@mastodon.social Hey, just wanted to say good on you all for hiring @robin@social.riley.pub! Really great choice there!

@ChrisHolladay@mastodon.social @evacide@hachyderm.io Burners are really damn tough to get nowadays, they've massively cracked down on them in most markets. And for a politician almost useless.

@trantion@masto.ai @abucci @andrew@social.hodgson.io @davidgerard@circumstances.run @fasterandworse@hci.social Pointing at a bad thing that can happen now is not a defense in making that bad thing easy and convenient, it's an argument that it all needs to be regulated. I'm in the EU, you cannot record without consent, on your own property you must post a notice and people must be able to contact you and request footage of them be deleted. This should be the norm everywhere.

@abucci @andrew@social.hodgson.io @davidgerard@circumstances.run @trantion@masto.ai @fasterandworse@hci.social I imagine requiring a prescription for these as a medical device would be a good thing but something tells me the moment the market is limited like that they'll have no interest in providing the product.

@makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social @TheEntity@social.treehouse.systems @davidgerard@circumstances.run AI produces utterly useless and unmaintainable shit code at an enormous ethical and environmental cost while dumbing down the people who employ it for the benefit of a group of techno-fascist billionaires. So yes, I am an "AI hater" because all of those are bad things and no one has ever put forward a verifiable good thing about what we are calling AI.

@gsymon@mstdn.social @evacide@hachyderm.io Or his compromised phone didn't show them.

@TechTangents@dialup.space Thanks for alerting to me to your channel, you earned a subscriber. I've been disheartened at how AI seems to be infiltrating the retro space with some creators/hobbyists using it for various tasks. If there was ever a space for which AI should be unwelcome, retro computing would be it. I mean it should be unwelcome everywhere, but seeing retro channels embrace it is incredibly off the mark.

@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Now ban it.

@duke_of_germany@mastodon.gamedev.place Pixel 9, only one compatible with basically every Android ROM in case you want to use it for Graphene or something later.

@evacide@hachyderm.io When Amazon bought Ring they found the team was using it to stalk women all over Ukraine. They put an end to that, but six months later discovered the developers had built in a back door so they could resume their stalking. Men are trash.

@hywan@floss.social Based in the US meant this was inevitable. Honestly based in the EU is not great either. Maybe something should be organized in Malta or somewhere similar.

@sashin@veganism.social UBI + fixed percentage of national GDP evenly divided + Specific social benefits (health care/child care/housing assistance/food assistance/etc). Just support people living normal lives as is, imagine the gains in the arts and sciences if we did this.

I think we should start referring to #MAHA as "Vibe Healthing" anyone with me?

@crankylinuxuser@infosec.exchange @tante@tldr.nettime.org In other words, you are not being intellectually honest, got it.

@Scorpion8741@infosec.exchange @evacide@hachyderm.io Why would that surprise you and why would you believe that would stop an actual nation state level actor with the backing of the country with probably the greatest intelligence apparatus in the world?

@abucci @andrew@social.hodgson.io @davidgerard@circumstances.run @trantion@masto.ai @fasterandworse@hci.social A normal company being honest about it's intentions would embrace this, medical devices are incredibly profitable and are often paid for out of state health care. The fact that these companies have no interest in such a lucrative, unending revenue stream tells us all we need to know about their real goals here, and it's not just making money.

@trantion@masto.ai @abucci @andrew@social.hodgson.io @davidgerard@circumstances.run @fasterandworse@hci.social Regardless, the cost to society is very high and non-consensual. The defense being mounted is that it is a medical device for some. I'm in favor of that, regulate it as a medical device with appropriate for that purpose functionality. If they are going to claim that as a defense they should stand behind that when the rest is regulated away.

@gcmd@floss.social That's fair. Honestly this file manager makes a ton of sense for tiling file managers where a primary goal is everything being keyboard driven. Mebbe we can find someone to work on a theme/plugin/etc to fully integrate...

@gcmd@floss.social Getting it working on atomic/immutable systems I think is important, as is getting it in flathub when you have time (or at least brew). I did notice some of the plugins are marked as missing dependencies, if you want any help tracking down needed stuff to ensure a fully self contained install let me know. Spent a lot of my career in software QA, happy to help.

@pixelate@tweesecake.social Unfortunately you decided to slop code this. It's too bad, screen read users deserve first class support.

@dansup@mastodon.social I'm not going to speak for the trans community, I'm not part of it although I'm very supportive. I will say that the ones I know do not feel he has changed his mind, his approach has been to avoid letting it harm his show's image not actually embracing trans women as the women they are. I'm sure someone in that community could probably give you their perspective with examples better than I can. I enjoy Drag Race, but I totally get why some do not.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange Of course unfortunately Linux is increasingly becoming slop itself, sadly.

@gcmd@floss.social This is what I see when executing Ptyxis from cli.

@gcmd@floss.social Not critical but these are the errors I get on launch now. It runs, but it's only semi-customizable and does not seem to completely obey niri for window placement rules and such.

@gcmd@floss.social I'm still annoyed the decline to take on cli apps, it's the one advantage snap has over flatpak.

@Sea1Am@mastodon.social @evacide@hachyderm.io Because not everyone has a choice and in many places it became the default.

@masek@infosec.exchange You are welcome to your opinion. Not going to keep arguing. It's bad. Worst I've seen in my life. Was there for all of them since 91. Feel free to disagree.

@techsinger@tweesecake.social @pixelate@tweesecake.social Unfortunately the ones behind the LLMs welcome your usage so they can ultimately eliminate you. It's self defeating. You cannot use a tool like this for liberation, it will only eat you in the end. They do not consider you to be human.

@dansup@mastodon.social He has literally been extremely clear that he is a man and not trans and has been very upset when that's conflated.

@gcmd@floss.social I'm sorry it's such a pain, I'll definitely have words with them! Right after I figure out who 'them' is lol!

@bms48@mastodon.social Lucky organs.

@itsmaya@social.treehouse.systems @glyph@mastodon.social He's also deleted several of the comments and links that were put after that post, after stating he does not delete history or discussion. For instance: https://archive.ph/cCZGN

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social Don't hate me for being #TeamKessler at this point...

@gcmd@floss.social Yes, it's not really following niri, behaving somewhere between normal and a floating app.

@tante@tldr.nettime.org Living overseas I transferred my US number into Google Voice five years ago (I'd love an alternative btw). It works for 90% of stuff, but systems detect it as a digital number and won't send the code to it. Always results in some form of support contact if I can't use an alternative (like email). Just give me FIDO2 everywhere please?

@masek@infosec.exchange I do not agree, I think this is on a completely different scale and really is not comparable to past bubbles in tech. This is closer to the 2008 financial crisis than any tech related bubble.

@makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social @davidgerard@circumstances.run Again, he had the option to decline rather than wreck the project with slop code. Nobody forced him to come back. If it is vital someone will take it over since, well, they rely on it. If nobody does, it wasn't that vital. What he has done has literally made the project worse than letting it decay on it's own. Edit: Adding to this, he made it far less likely he can find a maintainer as now they'd have to deal with the slop he added.

@prism@infosec.exchange @pixelate@tweesecake.social True, nobody can have a position on anything unless they are a direct contributor, right?

@dansup@mastodon.social He has continued to be very problematic on the topic however, I think he can both be an icon while being a problem.

@pixelate@tweesecake.social There is no excuse for using unethical slop machines. None. Fuck off with your theft.

@0x00string@infosec.exchange It also ignores how this actually works. It's six reps and six dems who switched. The six reps traded with six dems due to district leanings so they could each take counter party positions for their elections. Had six dems not switched, six reps would not have either. But also, Dems need to say fuck the horsetrading and get a fucking spine, win or lose a vote. Who the fuck are you? (I mean, we know they aren't left, but they need to get honest about it)
