Just renewed my Irish passport card online. The passport itself is good for another 5 years but for some reason passport cards only last 5 years, rather than 10.
I was bracing myself for the ordeal as these things are usually frustrating from start to finish.
But, no. First picture I took was accepted without issue, lots of details to enter, but all fine. Paid my €35. All done. Still a couple of gulps of coffee left.

In addition to the other (very good) advice you've received, obviously the usual personal protection (unfortunately) applies. A loud rape alarm and/or pepper spray may not stop someone but it could draw enough attention or buy you time to get away.

Consider installing Obtainium (available from @fdroidorg@floss.social).
It allows you to grab releases directly from Git, Codeberg, or whatever as soon as they are posted.
There's a bit of a learning curve, but templates for the more "fiddly" apps can be found on https://apps.obtainium.imranr.dev/
Having said that, I'm not sure if you can get Conversations via that route. I use Monocles, which is a fork.

I would suggest starting at https://meshmap.net/ to see what other nodes are around. Of course they won't all be listed.
Install the Meshtastic app on your phone, tablet or computer. Check that your device has the latest firmware version.
Then configure it.

Their accounts won't cease to exist after 72 hours, they simply won't be able to communicate with people on the fosstodon.org instance. I suspect that a number of other instances have already defederated them or will do so in the near future.
People on that instance will be able to migrate their accounts for as long as it continues running. Of course there's no knowing how long that will be.
