@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange some kind of FORTH on a Z180, trying to explain to passing business people that this will 100% browse and edit structured data and run reports more securely and reliably than what they're using

@nixCraft@mastodon.social disappointing, but BSD has deserved more of my attention for years. Maybe this will motivate me enough to install FreeBSD on something

@minmi@sfba.social it's nonsense anyway. If my basic needs were met, I'd be delighted to clean and repair stuff, help people get around, move things around my city, garden in the park, whatever needs done. Doing a variety of useful things is how I want to spend my time, I just can't because I have to work. I don't think I'm alone

@rainynight65@aus.social @aj@gts.sadauskas.id.au @990000@mstdn.social the Psion 3 (1991) could label alarms. To be honest we're still over engineering this - a strategically placed chalk board could handle a morning reminder to get milk

@2qx@mastodon.social No; I'm suggesting that it is good for society if people have access to news, so society should collectively provide that access. I don't really care about allowing/preventing payment, or money, or states. As long as our hypothetical society still has money, if producing and delivering the news requires some money, then some sort of entity needs to collect contributions and make funding available. Personally I would prefer a utopia without money, but I don't have a plan for how to get there

@woe2you@beige.party @maxleibman@beige.party I was thinking of saying something like this, but I wouldn't have phrased it nearly as well :)

@timberwraith but he was still hungry

@kirtai @alice my parents had a cat called Asparagus. They tried to get him to answer to Gus, but he insisted on the whole word being used. He also had a tendency to wander off for extended periods, during which they had to spend a little time each day shouting "Asparagus" in the street to see if he had returned from his travels yet

@brie@do.crimes.brie.gay interesting! I mostly write tech docs but I'll check this out. I tried a few note taking apps (e.g. Logseq) and had the same friction you describe going from structure and notes to actual content, and I'm mostly writing Markdown so your approach might be a good fit

@matt_ellery@mastodon.social my direct experience is very old. I used a Drift HD with Linux many years ago, and a couple of different GoPro models (3 and 4 iirc). No issues, and I suspect anything that uses a micro SD for storage will be fine since you can always just put the card in a reader and Linux does well on filesystem and video format support

@Natasha_Jay@tech.lgbt on the plus side, it turns out my browser lies quite a lot

@trickykat@beige.party I use the face on the front of my head to simulate emoji reactions when people talk to me. It can only really do the face ones though. And to some extent the potato

@rberthier@oc.todon.fr I'll see what I can do; it's going to be quite a hectic week and I wouldn't want to power the machine up without looking at the capacitors in the power supply (it's been a while and I wouldn't want to break it), but if I get a chance I'll check it out. Failing that I'll mention this to the new owner so they might be able to look into it when they get the machine running

@kestral@masto.hackers.town Great! I'm going to be there for the first week of April (3rd to the 7th I think approximately). I'm a bit wary of saying exactly where in public. There's an email link on my website if you'd like to figure out the details that way (https://mackenga.ro/about/index.html#contact-me) but I'm open to other communication options if you prefer

@leosam@mastodon.social Yeah, I'd love to keep it myself but I live in Romania and it's just not practical to try to move it that far (especially with the CRT, and I think it would be a shame to separate it from that). I hope someone relatively near the machine can take it while I'm in the area

@marshalla99@thx.gg Noted; I'll not be able to make it to York that week and it's probably not worth the trip for him, but maybe someone is traveling the right way. It's a good option for retro machines if I can't find anyone who can collect. I have a couple of smaller retro machines there too, but they have more sentimental value and are easier to transport so I was planning to keep them; maybe his sheds would be a better home though, I'll ponder that

@Njord honestly, I'm conflicted: useful in limited cases and worse than useless. If you know what you're doing they can produce useful results, but they are misused in ways that are so wildly destructive that I think we'd be better off without them. Many of the things I see people use them to do can be more efficiently done some other way. Sometimes you need some bullshit and I don't think human effort should be wasted producing it; but in those situations I think it's probably wiser to take a step back and figure out what you're doing wrong that you need bullshit in the first place.

@dx@social.ridetrans.it agree 100%. By the way, there is a typo near the start of the alt text. Well, not exactly a typo, looks more like a steno mis-stroke or (maybe more likely) speech to text error?

@alefunguju @forgejo great idea! I'll remember this next time someone insists on a non-diffable format for something; that's a really useful trick

@m0xEE@breloma.m0xee.net @Elucidating@mastodon.social font preferences are quite individual but you might like Spleen (https://github.com/fcambus/spleen) I like it for code, especially at lower resolutions

@2qx@mastodon.social @jplebreton@mastodon.social accurate reporting is a public good and should be free at the point of delivery. Assuming our utopia still has money, fund it from taxes

@Shepharo@mastodonapp.uk I'm not in the UK anymore but interest in TDD was rare when I worked there. I used to argue that while it might be slower at first (and I'm actually not convinced even that is true), with TDD everything gets faster instead of slower as work progresses, and you get to keep that speed advantage for the life of the system. I'm a contractor so I tend to "meet people where they are" but I still encourage TDD. Nobody's going to retro-fit a good test suite later, so if you don't grow one while you build a thing, the thing will probably be expensive to maintain and short-lived

@leemadgwick@mastodonapp.uk I love it; the modified and weathered buildings that look like they started out quite standardized and lived a life; the juxtaposition with nature. It feels bleak, but it looks like Spring. I really want to step into your paintings and just hang out, it looks so peaceful and hopeful there

@tomjennings@tldr.nettime.org @mhoye@cosocial.ca it seems to be Android although they also mention Sol:OS as a future option (no idea what that is). I like the idea of an e-ink (or reflective mono LCD) tablet but I'd want to run Linux on it. I've been tempted by the PineNote but my experience with their hardware has been... mixed; and it's not cheap
