@wim_v12e @csepp and if the estimates get revised down by, say, .05C/year for the next ten years, it's down to 2.3, which is already wildly better but again, exponential growth.

Image from https://ember-energy.org/latest-updates/chinese-solar-exports-double-in-a-month-to-hit-record-high-amid-energy-crisis/

and looking at the numbers paints an even more remarkable story:

Exports to Africa rose by 176% exports to Asia doubled to reach 39 GW both new all time records

Countries with particularly rapid growth in Asia include India (+141%, +6.6 GW compared to February 2026), Malaysia (+384%, +1.8 GW) and Lao PDR (+108%, +2.3 GW). In Africa, Nigeria (+519%, +1.2 GW compared to February 2026), Kenya (+207%, +1.4 GW) and Ethiopia (+391%, +1.1 GW) all imported over 1 GW of solar PV technology for the first time ever in a single month, predominantly in the form of solar cells.

The ongoing energy crisis is actually proving to be really, really good for the world, long term.

I, for one, don't expect the world to be stable any time soon. Which means that the demand for more and more stability through energy independence and especially solar isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

@cascheranno @jacqueline (Wouldn't be quite as good as what I'd want, since it'd be about the same length and width as tangara, but could cut thickness drastically, remove the very fragile bits [the screen is very scratched on mine since, well, I used it like that for a while before deciding it wasn't a good idea], have a much stronger case, and a much more stable battery arrangement)

@cascheranno @jacqueline and fwiw I've dropped mine dozens of times and everything still _works_ there's some cosmetic scratches on the screen, one of the buttons works but doesn't have the tactile click it's supposed to, etc And I've had it for over a year. It's actually survived my carelessness better than the other ones I've owned, even with its shortcomings :)

@cascheranno @jacqueline It's nothing too bad. It'll probably survive for a while even when treated like that but it's clearly not _made_ for it. TBH what I'd want for that is more ipod shuffle than ipod. No screen, solid metal case with _no_ give to the internals. ...hmmmmmm there's a thought. tangara mini? Take Tangara, slightly modify software to just _always_ be in shuffle all mode (build the index on first use / the new "new files only" mode, maybe have a LED indicator for it?, then just, pick a random number and load that track from the index and play immediately) the instant it boots, remove the screen, remove the controls machine a small case out of aluminum for the PCB have a "bluetooth pair" button that just tries the nearest device and moves down the list until success, pair by holding headphones _right next_ to it so strength can be used to decide if it's intentional have a skip button, a play/pause button, and a previous button and then just use a PRNG forever while on

@jacqueline TBH with how thick tangara 1 is I've been wondering if it wouldn't be feasible to just toss in a single 18650 somehow never even tried to sketch what that would look like or where it would go, it would necessitate some change to the shape, or maybe designing around it [2 smaller PCBs instead of one large one, stacked, one taking space where the battery is now? Could maybe figure out a way to make it work but it has to be an explicit goal or there's no point] 2xAAA is probably easier and good enough tbh

@theorangetheme @deshipu @mntmn Tangentially, it always entertains me when people use "in minecraft" after saying one of the few things that's actually illegal to say and then get shocked when they get in trouble for it tbh There was a court case last year IIRC where someone was explaining to the jury that "'in minecraft' is a phrase people use when they want to pretend they're not serious" or some such 🤣 ...pretty sure there was a conviction there though, turns out the law is not defeated by such spells

@dansinker I was in Chillocothe, Ohio a few years ago. A friend told me that there was no way there could be train lines there Then I was in a free-to-the-public bus and the driver was pointing out the train lines that used to run in there, "shame they got shut down."

So, that:

  • Is launching in mainland china only
  • Only supports FLAC and WAV [of semirelevant formats]
  • Is not open
  • Has no bluetooth
  • Has indeterminate price which could very well end up being worse
  • Has a shorter battery life (which means even if it had BT it'd be useless)

But!

It has a few pros:

  • Metal case
  • Cool rotary knob

But again, not open, so a lot harder to modify.

The ONE thing that that really looks to have going for it is that it can operate as a USB DAC

Tangara just needs a firmware patch to support that ;)

aren't conducive

one of my biggest uses for a mp3 player is running / biking (open-ear headphones on low volume! I'm very careful!) / going to the gym

and tangara just really can't handle that

(biking, ish. Bluetooth from backpack if it's well secured in there, is basically fine. gym, with overhead headphones and 3.5mm jack, works depending on what I'm doing / if I have somewhere secure [not in a pocket] to put it)

it just can't handle constant jostling
