mastodon 4.7.2Likes: Hats, bridges, rain, turtles, very small things, levitating businessmen, drinking tea with the lights off after everyone else has gone to bed, and Oxford commas.
Why you should follow me: Did you ever watch Unbreakable, starring Bruce Willis? I've got no sense of smell, but in return I got five wisdom teeth. It makes me, like, 25% wiser that many other people.
Other facts: Married. Two children. Mostly content.
Profile picture: Me with a Jolly Roger-hat.

@UkeleleEric@mstdn.social @golgaloth@writing.exchange Oof. Imagine the type of Karens sellers have to deal with at maths conventions.
"Excuse me, is that special offer of 59 factorial in base 10, or some higher base? It already seems a bit steep to me."

@OscarCunningham@mathstodon.xyz @johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz Sorry, but this is absolutely not solved. The source listed is a register of symbols, not natural usage. Where did _they_ get it from in 1950? How is it better that it showed up magically there, instead of in unicode directly?

There's about one yearly post somewhere online, from someone new who bypassed bitlocker with an arduino and two paperclips. It's always passive attacks on the bus.

@michelestrider@mastodon.social In my non-american head, today is exclusively "revenge of the fifth" day, and I was very confused by your post. Is something wrong with my sith costume hat? Took me a few seconds to realize.

@jiub Every time there is a five second gap in audio on my headset, global volume increases by 5%, maxing out at 200%. Listening to music works well enough, but if someone is talking on a video or a call, I have to continuously lower the volume due to pauses.
Only Linux has issues like these....

@OscarCunningham@mathstodon.xyz Absolutely. I picked up on the wikipedia edit a few months ago (someone linked it here on Mastodon), and got my hopes up when I saw this now thinking it was more news. Hopefully, the buzz generated around it now will end up uncovering some more info.

@TheEjj @grumpygamer I hear Kubrick did the first landing, but he was such a perfectionist he made them do it _on the moon_.

@bloodravenlib What makes these models worse than other bottles without a pressure release valve? Is it that the caps have short threads, so they are free to move out very soon when unscrewing?
I'm thinking this is probably a potential issue on other brands and models too, so I'd like to be aware of the root cause.

@CowboyWho Maybe it said Test Under Sign first, but then someone pointed out _that_ was wrong.

@angusm@mastodon.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr It also seems to me we have all collectively forgotten that today's LLMs are built on multiple ideas that are individually useful. Embeddings, for example, are under-utilised and super-interesting on their own. I would not be surprised if our brain partly operate on similar ideas.

@HatkeshiatorTND @joe @Suiseiseki That is often mandated by code standards, to avoid bugs from misleading indentation. I don't mind either way. If that is the norm in the project, you'd obviously follow the norm.

@aulia@mementomori.social @Gargron@mastodon.social "or the DuckDuckGo search engine". I wonder if this part is a misunderstanding. The tracking works by using webrtc to localhost (locally installed app) from JS on a page. How you got to that page seems irrellevant to me.

@rejzor@mastodon.social @aulia@mementomori.social @Gargron@mastodon.social On a phone with locally installed apps, I just assume my IP is public knowledge anyway. Seems like a safer assumption. I agree though that WebRTC should not work everywhere by default. Why not ask the user, like browsers would for microphone and camera access?

@nazokiyoubinbou@urusai.social @typeswitch@gamedev.lgbt It's from Douglas Adams's "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe", and stripping them bare is basically what happens:
"Since we decided a few weeks ago to adopt the leaf as legal tender, we have, of course, all become immensely rich."
Followed closely by:
"So in order to obviate this problem," he continued, "and effectively revalue the leaf, we are about to embark on a massive defoliation campaign, and...er, burn down all the forests. I think you'll all agree that's a sensible move under the circumstances."
