Successfully prosecuting the LLM companies under The Computer Misuse Act for their hacking activities is going to do a lot more to regulate their behaviour than any proposed regulation is. I have a feeling any upcoming regulation will just build a moat around the existing big players and entrench their position.

I think gen ai/LLMs are supposed to make us give up on creating and FLOSS. If there is no community building things the only place you could get it from is the oligarchs.

I do wonder if those who are relaxed about a single national id tied to all of your data understand how relational databases work, growing government authoritarianism and managerialism, the lessons of history, issues around data quality, statutory trade offs of data usage for finding small groups of people, or the actions of current governments' misuse of the data they have.

Thinking about starting a new tech user group with a Luddite/self|community owned slant (ala Human Emacs/codeberg decision on LLMs) as trying to put these kind of things into existing user groups is just too painful. It would be about AI skepticism (as that is just depressing me), but about what things are being built that aren't using generative AI to produce the code. I suppose all I'd need would be a speaker, a way to record, and a way to host the event (something that isn't teams/zoom/google). Anyone interested? Any suggestions on what stack could make it work? Anyone want to talk or suggest other things we might do? Anyone want to help or in fact just do the whole thing as this burned out organiser is still burned out? What I want is something I can go to where everything I'm learning about wasn't LLM coded and is about that thing rather than about LLM unhappiness. Only suggesting organising it as I've not seen anyone else yet.

Running on their own gas powered generators and throwing out heat and pollution.

And even if they do, they create massive amounts of ewaste as they burn through the GPUs they buy (it isn't an actual investment in infrastructure, and given how many are being powered by gas on site, it isn't even helping us improve the grid or create more green capacity)

I'm finding that a lot of the things I've been using over the years are not really being built and maintained by humans but instead being written by LLMs. It makes me wonder why I did spend my money and time in some places. I still really value the human community around understanding these problems and building these things where they exist and value them even more now.

@mayintoronto@beige.party I think structurally most are (other than coops, places with workplace democracy, or strong unions, places where workers have very good alternatives to doing what they're told). Most bosses aren't that bad though But places lacking in psychological safety have sure felt like it to me and I've been in a few (annoyingly they are often the ones where the actual work itself is more important or aligned with my values)
