@fesshole@mastodon.social Yes, but the road for them to get there was never easy. It's gotten better in recent years but I remember the years when same-sex marriage seemed out of reach. It wasn't that long ago. And there are still evil forces working to roll back progress.

My cousin died about a week ago. Graham was 60. We weren't close, but we were on friendly terms. He was a high school janitor for almost 35 years, retiring earlier this year.

I found out too late to get to Missouri for the funeral. My other relatives filled me in on what happened.

The funeral was at one of the largest churches in his city of 6,000 people. The local school district dismissed classes early so students and staff could attend.

They filled the church.

There was story after story of how Graham had made their day with a smile and a kind word, or helped them out with a difficult problem, or was just the guy they could always rely on.

Graham was actually a pretty reclusive person. Yet everyone in the city seemed to know him.

He made an impact on a lot of lives, both tangibly and intangibly.

I've reflected on all this and realized that, even with my specialized career in cybersecurity covering more than 30 years, I never made that kind of impact and never will.

People in professional contexts often seem to be posturing and positioning themselves for advancement, self-promoting and patting their friends on the back. (LinkedIn, I'm looking at you.) Maybe they spend their time exchanging private messages in public to make themselves seem part of an exclusive club. (Infosec Twitter/X, I'm looking at you.) But they're not making the kind of impact Graham made. And they never will.

Graham wouldn't have known. He didn't have a computer. The last letter I got from him was written on a typewriter. He had a difficult life in a lot of ways but he never took it out on others. I just don't possess that kind of grace, TBH.

I don't want to preach here. So I'll just keep in mind that my advanced degrees and mostly-successful career had their value - but a life spent supporting others has value as well. I'm no better than anybody else, and neither are you.

Public service announcement: if you're a male in your 60s and above, talk to your physician about getting a bone density screening. While routine for women, they're not routine for men. I had a bone density screening literally by accident: after fracturing four ribs in a biking crash. The test indicated significant bone loss, i.e. osteoporosis. There are medications available to help. My physician told me that she believes older men should be screened for bone loss, but it's not routine today.

@james@bne.social No doubt you've seen the number of stations in the United States and Canada turning in their licenses. Some were quite robust stations, such as Vancouver's CKWX. But the ad dollars are evaporating. Then there's the big drop in sale values. For example, a San Francisco cluster was bought for a mere $10 million earlier this year. Gigantic iHeartRadio is having layoffs on a regular basis. American broadcasters seem to be stuck in their 40-year-old programming dogmas and totally are lacking in any vision for a future very different than the landscape of the recent past. They're in survival mode at best. I was in Europe last month; the one saving grace for radio there may be DAB+, but it's got its own problems. In the Netherlands, I noticed a couple of local stations in the west that had given up their FM allocations in favor of a DAB+ channel. And coverage in France can be spotty (still) outside major regional centers. Few commercial broadcasters there seem to be asking the question, "is there something other than the adult contemporary hits my ten competitors are playing?" By the way, I also happened to be within listening distance (Rennes) for the shutdown of BBC longwave on 198 kHz toward the end of June. It was eerie to hear the audio loop telling people to use other means to hear Radio 4.

@jerry@infosec.exchange Thank you! I've been hoping this venue will be freer from drama compared to infosec twitter. As for CISA, as someone who works in protecting critical infrastructure, I've found them to be a valuable partner in that mission. I agree that they belong here.

More: New kernel 7.1.5 dropped today - same problems. It's looking like I may have to give up on @fedora after all these years. I simply can't have a situation where the system can't start up, especially when there are no log messages to give me some indication of what's going wrong.

DOTI's (Denver Department of Transporation and Infrastructure) commitment to Vision Zero seems half-hearted at best. Examples: Nothing done to address the speedway that is Monaco between 6th and Colfax. Using RRSPs instead of HAWKs or full-fledged bike signals for the Krameria-Kearney bikeway. Not updating the ancient traffic light at 8th & Krameria. Et cetera.

I'm noticing more and more small business closures: four in the past week alone. Two restaurants, a bakery, and a pharmacy. Another bakery stopped in January.

Worth reading - cybersecurity gets deprioritized because Trump can't stop pouting about the 2020 elections (among other things). https://cyberscoop.com/cisa-personnel-cuts-trump-second-term-analysis/

CyberScoop

Across party lines and industry, the verdict is the same: CISA is in trouble

One year into the second Trump administration, CISA faces a 33% loss in personnel and shuttered divisions. Experts warn of "decimated" capabilities and a leadership vacuum as the agency struggles to maintain national cybersecurity.

I know Juan Carlos' reputation has taken a hit in recent years, but when it really, really mattered, he did the right thing and used every bit of his authority to squelch the coup attempt. Something to keep in mind.

This is stunning. For decades, the station was WOW, a mainstay of Omaha radio. Big signal, too: 5,000 watts at 590, nondirectional day *and* night. Not even sports talk could save it, it appears. How the mighty AM stations are falling.

https://radioinsight.com/headlines/340967/590-kxsp-omaha-signs-off/

When I used to live in central Missouri, I could pick it up. In the daytime. At that distance, it wasn't terribly strong, but it was always there (especially on a car radio). #radio

Music files, especially lossless files, can be huge. My NAS is running out of space and has started beeping all the time. Since the NAS is next to the dining room, we've been getting to hear it all the time. So I've shut it down, at least temporarily.

For the first time ever for me, a @fedora@fosstodon.org Fedora upgrade has gone bad. I can boot using an old kernel but the updated kernel just causes the screen to go blank. No error messages, no anything. Upgrade was from 42 to 44. Documentation indicated a two-version jump was OK to do. Still trying to make sense of the situation but hard to do with no error messages.
