In a quick turn of events I've switched from qtile to KDE. Basically the first time ever I'm stable on Wayland (since I can load ICC profiles for my monitors).

I gotta say KDE is just phenomenal, super customisable. I'm not using any TWM plugins, but I've recreated my virtual desktops setups and all my keybindings, so it feels like home and it's a polished and complete desktop system, for a change.

I love it!

I don't want to become one of those old grumpy #Thunderbird users from back then that basically halted the UI/UX evolution of the application for decades.

But fucking hell, I've never seen more incompetent UI/UX choices made in any other application than Thunderbird recently.
Literally every time they touch something they break it.

Now every single message has an extra visual indicator that refers to the "account". I have a "green" account and now all my mails look unread.

Thanks for nothing?

Note to self: never read ever again any introduction to any book of fiction.

The genius that wrote the introduction to the Penguin Classics edition of Tolstoy’s “The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories” literally spoiled me the ending of Anna Karenina. I’m not sure I was gonna read Anna Karenina, but now I don’t think I will.

Thanks for nothing.

I finally read The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

What a ride.

To truly experience Boards of Canada's music one has to listen to it and let it simmer in the back of their mind. It's like implanting false memories into your brain and then forgetting them.

The false memories will resurface at the oddest moments during your day or night, stimulating some sort of craving for something vague and unnameable, which in the end can only be satisfied by re-listening to BoC's music.

It's like a shared false childhood /adolescence.

After listening for the last 24 hours to this album of haunted gospels only, I realised something striking: War Pigs (Black Sabbath) initial vocal line melody is basically a "preacher cadence", like a gospel. "Generals gathered in their masseeees! (up) Just like witches at black masseeeeees...(down)" It goes up and down, following a narration, like in a gospel! It makes suddenly a lot of sense...what is a Black Sabbath if not a kind of liturgy, anyway? #music #religion #gospel #metal

@retech@corteximplant.com I agree. In fact I've moved from ebooks to physical books whenever is possible to me. Although the space is an issue. But I'm also in the habit of scribbling in my books, jumping around, using sticky bookmarks...there's no way the experience is the same digitally. There's something different in the way my brain interacts with the text when it's physical. Of course there are many cases for which ebooks are better (travelling, late night reading, etc.).

"Oh Lord Yeah!!!" Ozzy knew what he was doing. He also said he was raised Christian and used to go to Sunday school. So the gospel didn't come just from the blues to him, but directly from the church. RIP Prince of Darkness.

I gave a shot at LibraryThing just to see if it would be more useful to me than StoryGraph and I literally had to delete my account for how much awful that website is.

It's not 2005 anymore, and sometimes that's a good thing!

Also I now appreciate StoryGraph so much more, in the end I can see how much thought went into developing it.

That's just not the point of reading at all, I think. I'd rather do deep reading and jump around to my own interests, not finishing books, only read certain part of certain books. Also there are some books that are just not meant to be read from start to finish, like books of aphorisms, or more "reference" books like history books. Everybody does whatever they want obviously, but I've just grew tired of the sort of mental model that these apps are built around, I don't find it useful. 2/2

The obsession with the King and the royal family on the BBC in the UK is akin, in my experience, to the obsession with the Pope and the catholic church in Italy on the national channels (RAI). With the difference that in Italy for some reason they’re obsessed with the English royal family too. Don’t ask me why.

I despise both deeply.

This gives you a perfect idea of how the “news” outlets are shaped around these parts and their relationship to power and ideology.

Boards of Canada new release hype. I get it, I get it.

Inferno seems like an appropriate title given the times we’re in.

Geogaddi is pretty cool, I could listen to it on repeat (maybe I’m even doing it now).

The Campfire Headphase is my second favourite so far, lots of great sounds and compositions.

Tomorrow’s harvest, I’m working on it.

I guess my biggest struggle is with MHTRTC. I just don’t get it man, it’s fucking creepy as hell and sounds like mush.

The obvious reason why people rate "The Campfire Headspace" as their least favourite BoC album is because they like to suffer. Bitterness and darkness have more appeal. They sell more.

I mean, TCH is great, possibly my favourite, just not dark at all, but quite shiny and happy, radiant. And what's wrong about it?

Nothing wrong to me.

Btw, I finally got into Boards of Canada, I can admit it now publicly. And to myself.

@kevin after re-listening to it today, my biggest put off are the beats, so I might agree with you. I'm not much into trip-hop in general, but for example I much prefer the rhythmic work of Geogaddi, I actually quite like it. I'm a huge Aphex Twin fan myself! And I love Autechre as well. But I'm getting to like BoC I think, they're very peculiar in a way that at a first listen it's hard to realise. At least for me.

@compfu well actually I've got more insights: it has to do with our current host because it uses its own cdn and exposes our media file via a domain that we don't own. It won't be the case with other providers. One more reason to migrate, I'd say.

@ghalldev@mastodon.social @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net yep, another browser uninstalled. I was barely using it anyway because it's full of stuff that I don't need and still does a poor job at some of the basic tasks. Also, it's the slowest browser I tried in a long while. Now partnered with techno fascists sympathizers. And it's still fucking chromium with a proprietary UI on top. Good job Vivaldi.

@compfu but from what I understand we're not losing the media files, they will be migrated as well. Other servers will have broken links but we will still have access to our own media files. But yeah if you *really* care about it I'd suggest a backup.

@kevin I don’t know, they’re after that analogue tape aesthetic and I get it, but in this first album that’s make me reach too much with my ears to the music, so to speak, it feels overly processed to me. And it’s fucking creepy with all those kids voices samples.

After craving some more Moby Dick I ended up reading a 2025 novel by E. Rutherford called "North Sun".

Very well written and definitely lots of connections to Melville's work (honestly if I hadn't read Moby Dick so recently I wouldn't get a lot North Sun's whaling lore), but in the end it didn't deliver to me.
