Today I saw “Meta glasses are the cybertruck for your face” and OMG that’s accurate.

Evangelizing a software that’s fucking up the environment, the cognitive capacity of people, and the access to information in the web, while enabling tech oligarchs to exploit and surveil people even further is fucked up. But even if you don’t care about any of that, it is still a really bad investment. Be better.

A better way of wording it would be:

Engineers say "Good, Cheap, Fast. Pick Two"'. AI grifters pick Fast twice while convincing themselves they picked all three.

But I'll not edit the post because I don't want to spam all the boosters with the change 😅

@QuestionGirl@mastodon.social good and AI are like water and oil, so I’m inferring you mean that you would choose good and fast over “fast twice” like sloperators do. It’s a good yet expensive choice, but if you have the resources, is a good option. I personally prefer good and cheap, which means slow, but only initially. Slowly made good code is faster in the long run, but quickly made bad code will be slower in the long run. The only true way to avoid debt is to not take loans to begin with 😊

You might have an interesting idea, but as soon as I see it was made “with AI” I stop paying attention. As a human, I really don’t care if you’re the one “commissioning the AI” or “giving the ideas”, if the actual thing isn’t made by humans, it’s irrelevant slop in my eyes.

@kaito02@mastodon.social don’t get me wrong, from my POV it’s slow in the long run (because it introduces never ending tech debt), but sloperators chose “fast twice” because they only think about speed and amount of code as metrics, they don’t even consider quality or cost.

@concretedog@mastodon.social update nobody asked for: I tagged the entire huggingface staff in a PR, and finally we got an answer. As usual they are playing the "but, we are the good ones" card: https://github.com/bigcode-project/opt-out-v2/pull/3724#issuecomment-5092641393
GitHub

Why is this opt-out and not opt-in?? by xx-kotas-xx · Pull Request #3724 · bigcode-project/opt-out-v2

Could you PLEASE make this opt-in instead? This is very scummy and I don't think as many people will be willing to support you if this is the case.

@daisy you’re expected to use your time to review when they didn’t use their time to code the thing, and the “solution” is to make the LLM review itself, Ouroboros style 😞 They want to vibe the requirements of product, vibe the design, vibe the implementation, vibe the tests, vibe the documentation, and vibe the reviews. They’ll reach a point in which they’ll need to vibe the customers, and maybe then they’ll realize how idiotic the whole thing is.

I'm muting conversation of the post. I'm taking some time off from social media like Instagram, and I stayed in Mastodon because it's generally more chill, but this post is kinda overwhelmingly popular, so I'll check it manually instead of getting bombarded with notifications constantly. Enough said! :pensive_party_blob:

@Hipska@mastodon-belgium.be @elementary@mastodon.social definitely not "most", and for those that do, is generally something you can disable in their settings. If your IDE doesn't let you, you can always use a different one (I switched out from VSCode because of their constant LLM push). Now about that "more relevant" part, I'm curious what you mean by that. My completions are always relevant and instantaneous and I don't use LLMs.

@NullTheFool@mastodon.gamedev.place I love when they say “but humans make mistakes too”, like that somehow justifies adding more error prone factors to the pipeline. Like yeah, humans make mistakes, but if an LLM adds mistakes ON TOP of the human mistakes, that’s WORSE!

@penpot my job pushes us hard to use LLMs, but it’s still an option, so I’m still choosing to use my own brain. In my personal life (where I use Penpot) I uninstall any app that doesn’t give me an option to not use LLMs. They are a disgrace for creators and consumers alike.

@jimniels it’s also worth mentioning you can get a menu with no JS and a single HTML by using the Invoker Commands API, which is already baseline. Nowadays we can do almost anything without using JS on the client side 💖

Every time an app adds “AI” do they really think the majority of their users think “finally” or are they aware users actually think “FFS” and they don’t care?

@soph@grrl.me I 100% share your sentiment. The analogy I used recently is that they are telling a person who likes to draw to “just take photos with this 2MP Webcam”. It isn’t the same. Yeah, it’s “faster”, but it takes all the enjoyment out of the craft, to produce the same result anyone with the same tool would produce. I think these trends are working as a filter for people who code because they like to code from those who do it because the end product gives them money.
