Gothic Tinkerer.

I hack on software, enjoy photography and cooking, am mildly obsessed with vintage and alternative fashion, read mostly classic science fiction and pretentious philosophy books, like to think about esoteric compsci things, and listen mostly to dark-wave and post-punk.

The only software I use voluntarily is emacs.

🎵 And however hard I try to integrate, I'll always remain alien 🎶

I love #emacs dicitonary-lookup-definition command. Whether I am reading an ebook and encounter a word I do not know, or am wondering if a word I used in a comment actually means what I want it to mean, I can just look it up with no distraction or context-switch.

So my laptop charger broke again...

Guys I am starting to think this extra-thin barrel jack was maybe not a good idea after all~~~

Also probably the HDMI port has cracked solder joints: The image drops out when I lightly touch the cable.

I wonder if this is specifically an old-laptop-problem. If I had one of those fancy new USB-C thinkpads and a USB-C dock at home and at the office, would the USB-C port eventually suffer the same fate? If yes, how long does it last?

Feels really nice building little tools for myself in a domain where I can just duct-tape a few of my own custom libraries together :)

However I really should spend some time thinking about how a Wayland event loop and zigs IO thingy can better cooperate...

(Wayland calls must be all done from the same thread to preserve message ordering. F.e. having a dedicated dispatcher thread while also sending requests from other threads would result in a mess I do not wish to debug.)

Current mood: Touching the code I don't like touching because it's annoying and overcomplicated until it is no longer annoying and overcomplicated.

Decoupled receiving bytes from dispatching events in the wayland library. This not only makes the code nicer, but it is also the first step towards integrating with event loops based on zig IO interface. While all wayland messages should be handled in the same thread (including sending them), receiving raw bytes can be done in another thread.

Anyway, earlier today I walked past a DJ doing a set on the sidewalk with like ten people dancing. Stuff like that is why I love this city. It feels so alive and welcoming.

Combining my wayland library with a project I do for uni. Wrote a simple image viewer for timepix3 files.

It's not as good as it could be, but it also only took like 30minutes to write.

Ok, xkb implementation is done(-ish)! Took me a little under four days, so less then the wayland implementation but certainly more annoying.

Behold the hell-spawn parser cursed into existence to decode this evil format: https://git.sr.ht/~leon_plickat/cassiopia/tree/master/item/cassiopia-xkb/xkb.zig

Technically I know have everything to port most of my #wayland projects, including Tarazed (although for that one I also want to move all WM policy to a custom scripting language, so the #zig port won't happen quite yet).

What's this new-ish trend[1] of old TV shows[2] posting clips to youtube? Are the right-holders trying to make ad money, sell DVDs, sell licenses to streaming services, or ... ?

Like, how much money is really earned by uploading f-ing Knight Rider clips and why are my recommendations full of those...

[1] ok, it's been going on for years, but only recently has invaded my recommendations
[2] the right-holders. I am not talking about fan uploads

@zzt@mas.to altman seems like the kind of guy who reads pop-science headlines and takes them as gospel. Yes, humans prefer doing things over not doing things. But humans also prefer meaningful activities, i.e. not the kind of work altman wants us all to do. People would still be busy in a four day work week. Busy with fitting all their friends and hobbies into their new free time and they would be much happier.

When the dust settles, we'll have every reason to be very smug, but we'll also have to start anew. Replacing all the big projects that adopted AI will take at least a decade...

of course one could do the extra effort to get flicker-free un-/maximizing and un-/fullscreening in your window manager, just for firefox to randomly arbitrarily resize itself AFTER it signalled the un-/maximize or un-/fullscreen operation to be complete, basically actively working against your efforts...

I now posses one (1) white dress shirt. This is the most normal colour of dress shirt I own - I usually prefer more interesting colours or black and actively avoid typical dress shirt colours like powder blue because they look too conservative and boring. This is an experiment. I am allergic to looking non-alt, so I hope trying to wear the white shirt will force me to come up with more interesting ways to style a dress shirt.

I don't really like locking the screen on idle, that's more annoying than useful.

But I would like to auto-lock when I leave my desk. Maybe some sort of proximity sensor to check whether the char is occupied?

complaining about LLM infection of FOSS
@worik@mastodon.social it is a screenshot of the github page of libffi, a hard dependency of libwayland which in turn is a hard dependency of almost the entire wayland ecosystem. github allows you to block users. If someone uses an LLM "agent", it commonly adds an "assisted by" line to the git commit. Since many of the "agents" have github accounts, which are blockable and get auto-linked by the "assisted by" line, you can easily tell if a project on github is slop.

What I do is the software equivalent of making niche custom furniture; But that is no fun when the wallpaper is mouldy, the foundation crumbling and you can't trust the walls... They are pretty close to making me drop this passion for good. But not even then would I be safe, university is starting to push it and the software I used to use for editing photographs is now also slop...

@dalias @coderanger at this point, the entire linux graphics stack, which is also used in part on the BSDs, is compromised (mesa accepts AI generated contributions, the harfbuzz developer went all in on "vibe coding", gstreamer has AI commits, etc.). I don't think these dependencies can be replaced short- to mid-term, unfortunately

@zyd This is a pretty weak-ass response, quite disappointing. Although rms calling LLMs "bullshit generators" in one the linked mails does give a slither of hope that he uses his powers in GNU[1] to stop LLM contributions. Although that conflicts with another of his mails to emacs-devel where he states he's looking into the copyright situation with a lawyer before making a decision... Thank you for your efforts! [1] which he really shouldn't have, based on *gestures wildly* everything

The "clothing I would acquire" and the "clothing I would actually wear" categories unfortunately are not entirely congruous. I suppose because I like suit-adjacent fashion in general, while at the same time not wanting to dress like a conservative (it's a hard life). Luckily things like waistcoats, suspenders and now slowly even ties are no longer part of what is considered normal formal wear, so it's easy to style them in a more alternative way.

I guess now it's time for either:

1) build the toolkit itself, likely in tandem with an application
2) design and implement the custom scripting language I want for my WM[1]
3) maaaaybe true type font drawing

Although I probably should also catch up on my other obligations, or something

[1] I have some concepts floating around in my mind; some sort of a scheme/haskell hybrid build on-top of a lua-like stack machine, maybe

@eigen@mattstodon.panar.ooo @joshsutphin@wandering.shop @xgranade@wandering.shop they haven't decided yet, currently there is a temporary ban on LLM contributions.. But from reading the emacs dev mailing list, to me it seems like rms wil have the final word and he wrote he's currently talking with copyright lawyers about it which is not the position I was hoping for. And at least the org-mode maintainer is in favour of using LLMs for emacs development.

With the recent waves of discovered severe security vulnerabilities, it's really interesting (in a disappointing way) to observe what some people consider solutions. The top two are, of course, memory safe languages and automated scanning of the sloppy kind.

They see the problem but they fail to learn from it.

Rust won't safe you if you still run all your applications unsandboxed.

The security model of all currently relevant desktop operating system sucks. It needs replacement, not ducttape.

* Create a custom wayland client implementation

Will probably do none of that this year though 🤷‍♀️
