We're working on our position on AI.

A starting point was asking everyone in our recent meeting for a few immediate words, more of a gut-based starting point.

They were: positive, something to think about, burn it all, I don't know, no GenAI

Have you got some examples of AI positions/policies to share?

We are steadily building a tool that has many of the things needed for community organising built right in:

  • communication & threads
  • polls
  • co-ordinating of events and activities
  • keep track of group rules & roles and apply sanctions
  • video calling
  • collaborative notepads/docs

And it has a plugin/extension system to further extending functionality (still a bit new...).

Excited to continuing developing it further!

✨ We have a new and improved guide for self-hosting Karrot! 🥕

It now has 3 approaches documented:
- Co-op Cloud - @coopcloud@social.coop / https://coopcloud.tech
- Docker Compose
- Without docker

(And a description of how we host https://karrot.world - none of the above!)

@lambtor@cyberplace.social I think it *can* do many coding tasks already (see https://taggart-tech.com/reckoning/) - for our situation, I primarily assume the context we're assessing it for is generating code, but I guess some people could imagine what it could do with data. At the moment we are pretty strict on not using external services, or having it optional (e.g. not using google for push notifications, self-hosting email sending, self-host emoji images, etc...)
I used AI. It worked. I hated it.

I used Claude Code to build a tool I needed. It worked great, but I was miserable. I need to reckon with what it means.

@decibyte@social.data.coop most of users are not very tech aware and use our hosted instance, although I'd love more self-hosted instances, and that does intersect with the potential instance maintainers you highlight. I wonder if a strict ban on AI policy would, over time, mean we compare less and less favourably with other options... @gotosocial@gts.superseriousbusiness.org

Fun fact about Karrot - with every deployment we include the JavaScript bundlesize visualization to show all the piles of js we're making the users download...

See it at https://karrot.world/bundlesize.html

I notice that the big blocks are complex features: maps, video calls, collaborative docs.

At least these are only loaded when you're actually using the feature. And should be cached ever after.

Still, nearly 11mb of JavaScript... (although that includes the translation files too).

FOSS works better when designed together with its users! Especially in the case of Karrot, which strives to be a community-led project to help people organize and make decisions collectively on a voluntary and autonomous basis.

That is why we started a community design process in order to design new governance features!

This is the first iteration of this design process, an adaptation of a design sprint. Any project out there with similar experience?

How to organize and distribute tasks in a community/grassroots project when the number of people and locations are more than just a few?

On Karrot, people who pick up food waste at supermarkets, bakeries and restaurants, can self-assign to do these pickups and everybody in their group can see clearly who's participating, when and where it's taking place.

Here is a screenshot of how we use this feature in our food saving and sharing project in Gothenburg, Sweden.

A nice article about one of the groups that use Karrot:

@Kevlar@kolektiva.social we don't have the transport logistics bit at all. it hasn't come up yet as a need for any of the current groups. it actually interests me a lot though, and if there was sufficient interest from a few groups it could be a feature to work on, think on a timescale of a few years though... quite a lot to work through to get to that kind of thing. you're very welcome to sign up at https://karrot.world - there is a playground group you can try out the features. 2/2

@Kevlar@kolektiva.social how do you co-ordinate who picks up from the store? that's one of the core features of karrot, anyone can sign up for a pickup slot. it has a map feature to see places, which some groups use prefixes to the name to distinguish different types of place (e.g. pickup vs drop off). the other core features are around democratic group management and communication, how do you handle that right now? 1/2

@Kevlar@kolektiva.social thanks! At the moment we're centred on groups that pickup food from stores, we recently expanded to include coordinating meetings too and more, but are looking to make it work for mutual aid groups and many more. What kinds of things will you be doing in the group? And how might software help coordinate that? Also, hi to Philadelphia! I had family living there for many years. In Bala Cynwyd.
