@muzzle If this went back to the Ancient Greeks, it still does not mean it is not an effective description of the current situation

@dave @SteveRudolfi If a user of the web site receives an AI generated version of the landing page that contains errors, and then tries to sue to owner of the web site, this could get difficult very quickly. The web site owner cannot see and has no control over the AI version of the landing page, so Google should therefore be liable for errors. Good luck suing Google in such cases!

@cstross@wandering.shop Looks increasingly likely that the next general election will mean a move to five-party politics with some form of coalition essential. That will take some getting used to for many, particularly like the Tory/LD coalition where the Tories managed to get the LD to take the blame for everything negative

@Geri@mastodon.online The best way to destroy the smuggling gangs business model would be to allow asylum claims to be submitted from France. That way there is no incentive (desperation) to pay criminals to go on a perilous small boat crossing. The only people left following the small boats route would be those not genuinely seeking asylum.

@tero@rukii.net 100% Tech can paper over the data quality cracks, but cannot effectively assess the accuracy of data. Just because data exists, is valid and is plausible, doesn't mean it is correct!

Cracking review of “Melania" in the Guardian. So bad it’s good???? Nahhh, will go and watch some paint dry instead for more excitement! https://www.theguardian.com/film/2026/jan/30/melania-review-trump-film-is-a-gilded-trash-remake-of-the-zone-of-interest

I'm marking some student assignments at the moment and one yesterday stood out, but not for the right reasons. The language was professional sounding and articulate, polished even, but the flow of meaning meandered all over, repeated itself and lacked structure. Overall, the assignment did not impress (whilst superficially using impressive sounding, professional language). Then at the end of the references a statement that ChatGPT had been used to tidy up language, improve phrasing etc. "all in line with the institutions AI policies". If the student had taken the time to read and understand the brief, do the work and then create a clear narrative, they would have done so much better. AI may be seductive, but it is not always good! #AI #ai_slop

@dave@europhiles.uk Two points:

  1. The original plan was for HS2 to be the start of a network of high speed rail in the UK going to Manchester, Leeds, the north etc. Sunak at the stroke of a pen cut it to a shuttle service between London and Birmingham - economic vandalism
  2. The main driver for the first part of HS2 is capacity - the West Coast Main Line is nearly full and the lines in to Birmingham are heavily congested so need a new line In the UK, engineers can build infrastructure, but politicians can't!

@aral@mastodon.ar.al There is a massive difference when 'breaking things' between a web app/ game failing to work and having to be restarted and changes to the planet that could be irreversible. Sadly, these muppets with planet sized egos generally do not appear to have dealt with large, safety critical systems before

@tero@rukii.net #dataquality is key to much of AI. The old 'Garbage In, Garbage Out' maxim has never been more relevant. However, sadly, for many organisations, it has become 'Garbage In, Gospel Out' where the outputs are overly trusted because there is too much belief in the infallibility of the tech
