@sidereal@kolektiva.social @robloblaw@mastodon.social @johne@denvr.social @jeffmcneill@hachyderm.io @mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io this is the thing that somehow doesn’t make it into the media narratives. Being an EV driver I make a point of talking to EV drivers. The response is always“my EV needs no maintenance”. Sure, tires, wipers, cabin air filters and wiper fluid but that’s it. Took my VW in for a “service inspection”. Service desk person says “EVs don’t need servicing. This is a formality”. How is it that this story is not making it into the news?

@MsMerope@sfba.social @miah@hachyderm.io @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I’m all in the “you want your stuff on the phone then you supply the phone” camp. How do people navigate the “we don’t provide phones and having a phone is a condition of your employment” problem? Previous employer used to provide company cellphones and it was mildly irritating to tote both around. One day they realized they could offload the whole management problem onto the employees by making them install The App. The App could of course factory reset your phone.

@advicepig@hachyderm.io same. Trust my family mechanic to do tires. He’s old school but no fool. He’s seeing people switch to EVs and then he doesn’t see them again except for tires. Used to see him all the time for the Camry. Oil every 6k. Timing belts. Brake rotors. Oil leaks. Muffler. Now we go over there to take him banana bread and shoot the breeze. He knows his business is changing, same as my Dad who had a film processing shop. Digital came and he just smiled and retired.

There has been a lot of chirping from the peanut gallery recently about Algebra being of no use in everyday life. I'm here to show you otherwise. Take today's power outage for example.

To calculate the length of the power outage, we write a simple equation in x:

x = current_time - time_on_oven_clock
x = 2.44 - 11.55
x = -9.11 hours.

I hope you can all see how applicable this ancient and venerable science is, even today!

@HayiWena@mastodon.online great job on citizen engagement and civic responsibility.

Town meetings really bring out the ignorant ones with poorly informed axes to grind.

Getting forward movement in backward towns requires more effort than most people realize. It’s just so hard.

The jump in China's March '26 solar output is roughly equal to all of Spain's installed capacity. That's all of Spain, (an extra ~35GW) every four weeks! We can reasonably assume that solar equipment orders jumped in response to war-related uncertainty in global oil markets. It is interesting to see that there was substantial *latent* demand for solar equipment. There was 35GW of discretionary purchasing that was likely directed away from oil to solar. 🧵 2/4

Have the Chinese been running their solar plants at half speed? One third capacity even? It's hard to read the data any other way. How else could they just double their exports? When we look at numbers like this, we see that China's production capacity is probably sufficient, right now, to get the entire world powered up with solar by 2030. https://ember-energy.org/data/chinas-solar-pv-export-explorer/ 4/4

@AeonCypher The problem with this is that power companies made their budget pitches to the regulators based on this projected demand. The regulators approved rate increases based on these projects in their Integrated Resource Plans. Now the power companies have approved rate increases for infrastructure they don't need to build and there's no way for the regulators to claw back those rate approvals. @chrisnelder foresaw this coming on the @TransitionShow Episode #226 (https://xenetwork.org/ets/episodes/episode-226-load-growth-shenanigans/?ts=data%20center)

he thing about taking a dollar from a potential oil purchase and using it to buy solar equipment is that the oil dollar is then lost forever. That purchaser will never again need to buy oil. What is baffling about this report is the sheer size of the uptick. Was there really 35GW of optional purchasing sitting on the sidelines? Sure, it's 35GW in aggregate, but that's still a very large increase. Even more surprising was that China mobilized that production almost instantaneously! 🧵 3/4

1. Do solar panels actually last ~20 years in your experience? 2. Are they worth the cost financially for permanent residents?

@gerrymcgovern @casdeiro @ExtinctionR Your assertions are all correct in direction, but wrong in magnitude. Your post claimed that panels fail in 3 years. Your rebuttal discusses quality concerns in the supply chain, a non sequitir. Quality concerns are a different problem. Panels last well past 2-3 years -- that's it.

The deli counter model works great in a classic producer/consumer idiom -- take a number, wait for someone to call you over. If you get bored and go to get some ice cream while you were waiting and they call your number and you aren't there, well you go to the back of the queue.

Charger vendors to acknowledge these problems are happening now, and they need to solve them.

As Alan Tudyk said so eloquently in Resident Alien, this is some kind of bullshit.

If you thought people watching video on their cell phones without earplugs was bad, wait until you have to negotiate a place in line at a busy fast charger.

Back in early 2025 I wrote up my experiences renting EVs from Hertz. At the time, one of my observations was that queuing at busy locations was largely cordial, but had the potential for trouble as demand [inevitably] grew beyond capacity.

(https://www.thejubjubbirds.com/hit-and-run-on-the-energy-transition-highway/renting-evs-so-you-dont-have-to)

At a popular grocery nearby, there are about ten Tesla chargers.

I have a new Windows 11 laptop. (Long story, no choice, long time Fedora user have dozens of Linux machines, decades of sysadmin experience)

I find myself needing to create a number of directories. I search various search engines for the shortcut key.

All results are garbage.

I ask ChatGPT. “Ctrl-Shift-N”

This is some kind of bullshit. We absolutely need workable search engines. A searchable internet is a vital public infrastructure need. We cannot abdicate this service to LLMs. .

For those of you critiquing my basic mathematics skills by claiming that the outage time was in fact 14.44 - (12.00-11.55), which is 3.00 hours, I should point out I was using the Non-Euclidean Temporal Displacement formula, which better captures the subjective truth of how it feels to be without power in the modern world.

Power outage today. Came back from walking Chico the dog at noon. House was strangely quiet. Thinking nothing of it I go to get the dog’s lunch out of the fridge. Turn on the light … nothing. Check the microwave clock - blank. Open the fridge - dark. Slowly realize no power.

Power comes back and i hear devices waking up. , How much background noise we live with!

Sounds of things coming alive again. Roomba: “Charging”. Fridge: “gurgle gurgle”. Laser printer: “whirrbrrt”. Dog: “Harrrumph”

Struggling with an iOS update. Phone has ~15 of 64Gb free. Update needs 18Gb. No easy way to free another 3Gb, apart from removing music, for which I use Doppler, which is excellent. #doppler

If my photos are mirrored to the "cloud" then why can't I have my app data mirrored? (rhetorical).

If my app data were treated as offloadable, in the same way the app binaries are, iOS update could simply offload a bunch of apps+appdata, install the update then put them back, leaving me with 15Gb.

RE: @forteller@tutoteket.no

Great work over at crowdsupply.com on an open source/repairable printer. An obviously useful device, simple and maintainable.

When you look at the design, you can see how hard incumbent printer manufacturers have been working at lock-in. Consider the many (many!) fights we've had over the years to get inkjets to be less predatory.

@failedLyndonLaRouchite@mas.to I feel your frustration. I have broken more Bodum carafes than I care to count. Wife got me a stainless double-wall carafe but with a different design deficiency- the handles of the carafe and the plunger are made of wood.

handles not removable so no dishwasher.

Never mind that the threads of the plunger attachment stripped after about six months. I just took one of my old plastic Bodum plungers and used that instead, and that *is* dishwasher-able.

@chrisnelder@mastodon.energy And that makes more sense! This is their export capacity plant just sitting there waiting to spin up in response to demand. No sense running the factories if you're only cannibalizing your own demand, but if the customers come, you're ready for them. And of course, they came. Just incredible that they even built that capacity out. No reason to expect that the March uptick is going to subside when (if) the oil starts flowing again. Once people change their minds ...
