Playing with maths and mechanics for cell & developmental biology in a physics dept.
This is my social account, tooting about scientific community issues broadly (#OpenAccessPublishing, #ScienceMastodon, and my community #mechanobiology more broadly #biophysics, #AppliedMaths, #DevBio).
My professional account about my own research interests is @jocelyn_etienne@mathstodon.xyz, follow that one if you want fewer general toots from me. My personal account is @cyclotopie@mastodon.gougere.fr

"The arrival of #machineLearning approaches that predict cellular behavior at scale and integrate a wide array of #biologicalData types makes the analytical demand on #mechanisticModels even more pressing. Prediction is increasingly available without #mechanistic #understanding. The central challenge is no longer building models that reproduce #biological behavior, but building #models from which causal structure can be inferred."
#theGuardian embraces the #allOrganoids narrative.
I'm not the best person to comment, but I believe this conjunction of over-enthusiasm for #organoids and of anti #animalResearch is problematic.
#PhysCell Conference, 7–11 September 2026 in Egmond aan Zee, a lovely beach location in the #netherlands
Deadline May 8, 2026.
https://meetings.embo.org/event/26-physcell
Conference topics include:
* #Mechanics and #dynamics of #membranes, #cells, #tissues, and #organoids
* Reconstituted systems and synthetic cells
* #Biomolecular condensates
* #Physics of #chromosomes and the #nucleus
* Sensing and information in #livingCells
See you there!
My #bibliography #bots @flypapers@biologists.social @Rxiv_mechanobio@biologists.social and @Rxiv_cytoskeleton@biologists.social have been off for a week, sorry.
More annoyingly, they currently don't manage to post #bioRxiv content, because their #RSS feed appears to be down? Any info anyone?
