I played the White Castle Matcha expansion yesterday and I have to say that it fixes almost all problems with the base game. More easily scoring points, the lantern engine that's more visible, more combos, and one extra action every round. The geisha actions also make sense and build on the existing rules. Great stuff! #boardgames

As a retro being, I sometimes feel stuck gazing at my rear mirror instead of looking forward through the windshield and as I try to begin conversations with friends and family about those "good ol' days", I notice something odd: they don't seem to care as much as I do? Have they moved on? How?

Why am I a retro hardware/software hoarder? Why do I hark back to "that time" so often? Nostalgia can be a bitch.
Is there anyone with similar feelings that has researched the topic a bit?

My The Drifter thoughts have been drifting onto the codex: https://jefklakscodex.com/games/pc/the-drifter/
@irgndsondepp@gts.da-miez.de and @MichaelKlamerus@dosgame.club were right. The game is amazing.

The Drifter: A Glorious Thriller, Mate. It doesn’t happen often that the same game is recommended to me by three different people. After the last time, a 20% off discount at gog.com pushed me over the edge: it was finally time to get drifting. I knew little going in except that it was a gritty pixelated adventure game with a cool looking trailer. Via Jefklak's Codex

Here's what I think about Kirby's Block Ball https://jefklakscodex.com/games/gameboy/kirbys-block-ball/ Better than Pinball Land!

Kirby's Block Ball: Kirby All-(th)ey-way. A year after Kirby’s Pinball adventure, HAL moved on from pinball machines to… breakout? That seems like a weird choice considering the pinball game was a direct result of Revenge of the ‘Gator that looked and felt a hundred times better than Alleyway; the Game Boy’s attempt at swaying over breakout fans. Alleyway also happens to be Jeremy Parish’s first entry in his Game Boy Works video series. I don’t know why HAL thought it was a good idea to make a K

I decided to charge the Analogue Pocket; my wife's Croc GBC cart was still in it. After three levels I can safely say it's been a while since I witnessed a train wreck.

I wonder how much Argonaut did on this and how much Virtucraft Studios. If it's the former I'm very VERY disappointed.

And here are some random thoughts on Kirby's Star Stacker https://jefklakscodex.com/games/gameboy/kirbys-star-stacker/ I have a GB Player for SNES lying around I'll hook it up later this week but my video capture card is in the WinXP machine that's in a closet right now... So how to record a screenshot... 🤔

Kirby's Star Stacker: Kirby Can Do Tetris As Well?. If anything, Kirby spin-offs are delightfully weird. Pinball, breakout, mini golf, what else can Kirby do? How about a Dr. Mario/Tetris variant? Sure thing, HAL thought, and a year after the release of Kirby’s Block Ball, we’ve got ourselves Kirby’s Star Stacker. Via Jefklak's Codex

@f0rrest this somehow kills my fond memories of those old games that, as an educated adult who has played way too many good games, knows how to dissect them, also ruins the memory of my younger self liking it? I do play a lot new games. But most of them are rooted in nostalgia/"oldness". But it goes further than playing games and admiring old hardware back when "things were simple". I think I now more often yearn for those days as a young dad struggling and having lots of shitty moments.

Tried Wayland instead of X11. Not much better but a bit better with 125% scaling. So now I need to decide on a WM, a graphical server X/Wayland (but avoid Hyprland as that community also comes with drama?), read up on the systemd drama, ... Looks like "just using macOS" is simpler lol

In my attempts to install Linux on the work laptop, I keep on banging my head against these invisible corporate walls.
Day 1: whoops I don't have an USB stick bigger than 2 GB. Ordered a new one.
Day 2: whoops I'm not allowed to boot from USB. IT admins enabled it for me.
Day 3: whoops I still can't boot because of secure boot & BitLocker. Back to the IT service dept, they temporarily disable it. I see it works, cycle home, try installing and...
I can't resize the 1TB bitlocker partition. FFS! 😡

Can anyone recommend a good subsonic/navidrome compatible music client on Android? I used Substreamer but that suddenly requires Google Play Services. No thank you.
Only other requirement: album download for offline play.

@irgndsondepp I played the director's with reworked ending and that was still a big mess, the weakest part of the game. v2 is on my wishlist! I didn't know that one would end on a horror fashion as well; I'm leaning more towards joyful games lately too much horror already in the real world haha https://jefklakscodex.com/games/pc/skald-against-the-black-priory/ was another one that started OK but went off the deep end; I still don't understand the ending.

SKALD: Against the Black Priory | Jefklak's Codex

SKALD: Against the Black Priory. The vibe that comes off the SKALD launch trailer perfectly summarizes what you can expect from Anders Lauridsen’s latest dark cosmic horror game: an authentic 8-bit role playing experience flashed on a Commodore 64-like cartridge that somehow was left undiscovered back in the day. Luckily for us, the game comes with a few modern ease-of-play enhancements that makes playing these eighties cRPGs less rough around the corners. Via Jefklak's Codex

Any (un)popular opinions on terminal emulators here?
I was an iTerm2 user until they shoved AI crap in it. Now I use Ghostty but I'm a shift selection noob and Ghostty is very basic.
On Linux I tried Konsole but the options are a bit overwhelming. I'm eyeing at Kitty.

Fiddling with https://github.com/RedBearAK/toshy to get my cmd muscle memory back on openSUSE. Feels dirty but works nicely.
Except for Emacs where it completely messes up everything. Trying to add it to the exclude list but so far can't figure out how.

The biggest problem now is eye straint. That HP's screen is terrible compared to the 2020 M1 MacBook Air I'm typing this on. I tried increasing the font size but that barely helps. half the PPI and 16" instead of 13" to spread these even thinner is very painful.
