Just some guy going about.

Like software and hardware, commonly using Rust and nushell.

You'll find me ranting on a whole bunch of stuff I have 0 idea on

Anyways, I'd like to amend my list to include the following in the near future

- Vaultwarden
- Gollum
- Mealie (Meal tracking, look for alternatives)
- Homebox/Grist
- Paperless NGX
- Immich
- Sure/Actual (Finance tracking)

Fellas, I have 2 months before my next major commitment, my j*b. Wish me luck as I attempt to fully internalize the workings of #nixOS, #nix the language, and nix the pacman. I'd set up a #systemd #nspawnd #container for regular linux work. (I'd like other suggestions on this). My current plans:

- #flakes/'modern' practices
- dotfile integration (not using #homemanager)
- use #bitwarden integration somehow natively and bridging between bitwarden store cloned locally and #linux keystore (not even sure what I mean here)
- #secureboot that unseals the encrypted root partition keys from the TPM and auto-decrypts my root
- #nixpak as much
- package my scripts to be proper packages/flakes/modules/whatever for better integration
- #snix/ #lix?
- #dhall config instead?

Give more suggestions/tips

#selfhosting enlighten me, how do I secure, and I mean THOROUGHLY secure, a public facing service (say forgejo/ntfy/matrix homeserver) etc properly, so that I can actually expose them to the public internet and inbound connections?

I am not yet hosting such services, mostly because I'm worried I'll badly mess up somewhere

BUT I really, really want to do it and do it well, all the kubernetes, containers, VM and orchestration talk sounds really nice!

(While we're at it, can someone teach me the difference between a homelab and a homeserver?)

RE: https://fosstodon.org/@orhun/117005457791799168 Man I'd have loved it if it wasn't so obviously slopped (and that too so badly that I'd rather just use one of aerc/mutt because they're actually written sensibly and usable and coherent and not TUIslop) And of course it provides an MCP because you totally need an agent to read your mail for you right? #rust #aislop #vibecoded

I like the quiet calm of anisota

Honestly, we should have similar clients for fediverse and mastodon

I personally find mastodon subpar (which is the reason why I hang out more on lemmy instead)

I'd reckon that all the apps by Mike are really good. But I'd like to know, if I had to choose one, which one should I choose? I was looking at forte, but unfortunately I cannot selfhost, and there are no public instances allowing signup

I mostly want the following:
- lemmy interop (should work for THEM)
- peertube interop (see above)
- pixelfed interop (see above)
- a facebook like experience

I really love the 'social' aspect of facebook, reddit too. I want something like that

So which one has servers I can create an account on? Because god this sounds like something I'd love to use on a daily basis

So I usually hate sending over bluesky links anywhere since I'm not a fan, but Rob Ricci highlights some important distinctions between #activitypub and #atproto Fundamentally, activitypub is designed to be useful with a partial view of the network. (Narrowing down to #mastodon here) Likes are communicated, mentions are communicated, and so on. Over at atproto land, you have no option but to write to your repo, and so you have no choice but to view the entire network to say, find replies and such (narrowing to #bluesky here). So the only way you can get your data is to read the network and filter it yourself, or have someone else do it for you, which doesn't solve the problem, only shift it. https://bsky.app/profile/ricci.io/post/3mooua5znk225#bluesky #bsky #atproto #mastodon #fediverse #activitypub

ehhh... only sort of agree. The difference is that AP has a way to notify another instance if, say, there is a reply to a post, or a mention of a user. This scales down well. In atproto, since you can only write to your own repo, the only way to find replies is to observe the entire network.

What's the scene with #activitypub / #fediverse development? Why do I keep hearing that developing software for fedi or ap is a major pain in the butt? #fediverse #activitypub #programming

Excellent article, but I'd reckon most of fedi already understands this

RE: @Kroc@oldbytes.space

This is freaking insane! To think that it ran on such old and low powered hardware and outlasted any of today's devices!

We need such shadows... but everyone's going for flat
