Hi! I’m new here. I’ve tried Mastodon a couple times but maybe third time’s the charm! I have become increasingly disillusioned by mainstream social media and I’m searching for ways to connect with other people outside of an algorithm. I teach high school English and I read a lot. Currently at book 92 of a read around the world project. I was a teen in the 90s and still trying to keep my grunge phase alive. I love art and film too. Hope to meet some likeminded people! #introduction

3 years ago, I set myself a challenge to read a book from every country in the world. Today, I finished my 99th book and will select my 100th. I’m still not even halfway round the world but 100 feels like a milestone. At this rate, it might be another 5 years before I finish this challenge but I’ll certainly be older and wiser at the end. #books #Bookstodon

On this final Friday of my summer break before I return to begin a new school year, I’ve got turbulent thoughts swirling in my bewildered head. I start the year #teaching #Frankenstein and will have to find a way to temper my growing urge to rant furiously about the parallels to the #AI monster the tech bros have created. But unlike in the Mary Shelley universe, we’ve allowed this monster born out of hubris to seep into our reality and destroy us from within instead. #literature #Bookstodon

Had a walk in Arab Street in #Singapore this evening after the rain and took a few shots with my iPhone using the mood camera app. #iPhonePhotography #Photography

@cmyrland@tutoteket.no that’s brave. I’m still finding it hard to delete FB and IG. Everyone I know is on there so I’ll just lose touch with everyone if I delete them. So annoying. I also tried Bluesky and it did not click for me either. So far I’m having an amazing start here! Just hope it lasts.

@cmyrland@tutoteket.no @brianb@fosstodon.org @Saltssaltgirl@mas.to yeah Twitter was the best for teachers. Nothing came close. But I’ll never step foot in X. No way.

@plzupgrademe@fedi.txw.ca I have lots to say about Southern (US) Gothic! Flannery O’Connor is one of my favourite writers. But please educate me on what Southern Ontario Gothic is. I’d love to learn! As for Munro, I used to love her short stories but I’ve sadly let the controversy with her daughter colour my judgment of her work. It’s a triggering situation.
