Ok I think I have it mostly figured out now. All my posting (posts, notes, and replies) goes to my website first, then gets syndicated elsewhere — currently only Mastodon. My site remains the authority for the things I post, and it receives backfeeds for interactions that take place elsewhere. I think I’m starting to get the hang of this IndieWeb thing.
You know what that means, right? A blog post (or more!) is brewing…

A message to our new friends:
1. Don’t use your Twitter password for your #mastodon account. Reusing passwords is always a bad idea. A password manager is your friend here.
2. Set up your 2FA. You can do this from the browser or from within the official mobile app under Settings > Account Settings.

#bitwarden is a better option in my opinion, but 1password is definitely better than no password manager.

@xinit@mastodon.online Security and convenience rarely go together and most users have the tendency to favor the latter. Pair this with their reluctance to trying new software, like a password manager, and you end up with “monkey123” being subconsciously entered into any password field encountered online.
I used to be guilty of this in a previous life myself. It’s never too late to start inching towards the “security” end of the spectrum.

@cjenkins@toot.wales There should be a section for 2FA in the settings. It's under Preferences > Account on v4 of Mastodon. I see that your instance is still on v3.5.3 so the wording might be slightly different.
