While what you said is true _specifically_ for the US, for europe it is actually not. You argument is still valid. I for myself tried to compare it with staying in the bronze age while the rest of the world embraces and develops iron and steel .... Which at least fitted the aspect of the enourmous resource cost .. but lacked the part where cars actually killed of thousands of jobs within a generation and made millions jobless because nobody needed horse farmsand so on anymore. But all of that does'nt really fit the actual problems we have _today_. I didn't (directly) use AI yet and i don't plan to change that .. but OTOH i'm a techie and deeply fascinated by all of it. IMHO, what we need is to understand that it is not "just" the technology but - as you said - it getting massively enforced upon users by literally _everyone_ of the top 1%. Getting cars in to the hands of the everyday average ppl had at least some positive aspect in the moment. How bad it became in the long run wasn't as clear. But today, we actually know what the plan behind it is. Centralisation of information and computing.... Actually killing off "home computing" for the profit of GAFAM and their owners. That's a real threat towards our freedoms. And IMHO, we get actually used by them because we (all) start(ed) another holy war about if AI is useful or not ...... completely ignoring the actors behind, helping them by ripping eachother apart over what to do or not.. It's just sad. 🙁

Still has it's own complexity but should be accessible without going too deep into microcontroller programming. [...] Heh, a simple search brought up this: esphome.io/components/sim800l/ "The SIM800L Component provides the ability to dial, answer calls, send/receive SMS text messages and send/receive USSD codes. The device must be connected via a UART bus supporting both receiving and transmitting line." So .. doing that within home-assistant and the esphome addon should be possible.. ;)

@vera@sueden.social Kannst du vielleicht das lattenrost darunter mit ein paar ratschen-zurrgurten versteifen? Das hat zumindest hier schon in zwei fällen durchaus geholfen. (Den zurrgurt einfach der länge nach von oben nach unten zwischen die latten "flechten" und spannen, so das die latten nicht mehr einzeln durchbiegen sondern sich gegenseitig stabilisieren. ;)

@theolodian Maybe you can look for some espressif ESP32-C6 DevKit and flash it with esphome right from your home-assistant as a first step .. and then explore some few basic configurations from the examples in the esphome community. Instead of actually programming your esphome image, you primarily configure it to behave in some wanted way... Like blinking a LED, make it a h-a controllable RGB led ... and later on communicating with stuff you connect to the board. (Like WS2812 controllabe RGB Led strips and similar). It won't be a ideal start into IoT stuff, but it's at least a pretty low level one. ;) (I personally got into esphome on h-a because my ceiling fand controller burned out within days after arrival and playing around with it ... instead of sending it back for a replacement, i bought a SonOff iFan-04, which is a ready built fan controller based on a ESP32 ... all i needed to get it working in h-a was, connecting 3 wires to a serial-usb adapter, opening esphome in the h-a webinterface, go do the web-flasher and having a browser with serial support (sadly only chrome/chromium based do that). I then had the device live on my wlan, downloaded a ready build config file for the ifan controller, twiddlet a bit with some parameters (beep duration, hig-power-boost-time when starting in lowest power mode and so on) and sent the automatically compiled firmare OTA (over the air, or wlan in that case) to the controller.. There are lots of resources out there to get a simple project started and get a feel for some basics ... who knows where that journey might end? ;)

On top of that, so many recent cars come with some sort of app support including fancy stuff like request the location of your car directly from the onboard gps and what not..... and ppl actually buy and like this stuff 🙁

Damit kann jetzt im nachhinein nicht mehr eruiert werden ob wirklich eine akute psychische schieflage der auslöser war. Insgesamt hätte ich mir bei sojemandem im vorfeld schon eine viel engere psychiatrische/psychiologische betreuung gewünscht. Aber genau das wird ja zur zeit konkret kaputtgespart.

It doesn't make things better when you're doing something (x) but need to change the setup because it got to much on the body .... and then "just need to do y" to get x done.... And just _can't_ get y even started ....

Which _IS_ bad and did cost lots of lives for _real_ .... but? You can see where your comparison completely breaks apart? Not using certain cosmetics because they did experiment on animals in the development is one thing. It's like, you would rather let ppl die because of diabetes instead of giving them insulin just because we had to resort to animals as a source... Yes ... LLMs and all the stuff around - including the massively intense drain on the resources of this planet - is a problem .... We need to deal with it and ASAP learn to get a healthy "relationship" with this new tech.... But saying it is like using torture? No .. not really ........ it's just more like "they" try to create new digital overlords ... and we have to stand up to make them into useful unicorns instead of all seeing and all controlling monsters.
