I was replacing Linux with Windows on an old laptop I am going to give away. Don't judge me, it is there choice. Anyway, I wanted to install Vivaldi for getting some of the setup work done so I go to Edge and type "Install Vivaldi". The first result was an entry saying "All you need is right here", e.g. just use Edge. This is another reason to dump edge and bing.

@futurebird@sauropods.win @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange This is totally true. The extent to which housing has become an "investment" versus "a place to live" is the problem.
Everyone wants their home values to always beat inflation along with their wages while the prices on things they need to buy all go down.
I keep thinking about the 'duh' effect. If you want to solve the homelessness problem - duh, give people a place to live. If you want to solve the hunger problem - duh, feed them. This whole mess of trying to instrument the a capitalistic economy so it is somehow motivated to solve these problem isn't working.

@futurebird@sauropods.win @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange I am reminded of an editorial in the Aus edition of The Guardian. The author pointed out that politicians in Australia have finally figured out that in order to make the price of "housing" go down, one must make the price of "houses" go down. This is obvious, but strangely overlooked.
Our economy has such a neoliberal, investment capitalist bias, the the price of things must always go up. Sadly, the people responsible for prices going up also want to minimize labor costs so... wealth inequality.
Democrats need to disavow the Reagan/Thatcher neoliberal ideal as a total mistake. Without doing that, we will continue to have increasing wealth, and house, and health, and education, and ... inequality.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @futurebird@sauropods.win If wages are going up faster than housing prices then the "effective" housing price goes down. The problem is, we have an entire governmental ecosystem at the state , local, and federal levels to maximize home prices and no means making wage prices go up. This is understandable. Every homeowner wants the value of their house to go up, but they want the cost of paying for the plumber to go down.
In Australia the federal government gave up on making wages grow faster than real estate value and instituted policies that would make the value of real estate go down. The result is that more people at the low end can afford houses, which drives down the cost of rent...

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange Yeah, it seems like everything you see in the non-technical media about AI is targeted towards ignorant business investors. While you'd think they'd be interested in how AI works before they invest, the sad reality is that they only care if the stock is likely to go up.

@Tutanota@mastodon.social Yeah, this is a "Key performance indicator" thing. Microslop wants to be able to tell investors that a large percentage of Office users are using CoPilot. So they turn it on by default and measure that.
Google is doing the same thing with Gemini. They have added it to Android Auto and it just randomly starts asking you if you want anything.
Remember, you, the consumer, are not the person being sold to - it is the stock investor.

@raganwald@social.bau-ha.us This was good. When I first interacted with GitHub Copilot, I felt it was like an automated junior developer without an ability to get better. This includes Copilot cutting an pasting code found on StackOverflow and GitHub, just like a junior developer. So, of course, business guys would decide "hey, we can just hire a senior guy to code review the AI code. What could go wrong?"
And no, other AI coding tools are not any better.

Rabbi Berman's editorial is worth reading even if you disagree with it. The basic, over simplified, version is that there should be a Jewish State because Jews above other groups are special hand can be a light to the world. There is nothing wrong with that, until you consider that the British Empire was largely rationalized by the idea that it was bringing true civilized thoughts and values to the world. We in the US adopted and modified that idea to become Manifest Destiny. Missionaries from Spain and Portugal were doing the same thing when they tried to convert much of the Western Hemisphere to Christianity. Indeed, it is a pretty good bet that the Egyptians, Babylonians, and Romans, who conquered Biblical Israel were acting under the same impulse.
Lots of humanity's sorrows come from one group or another, after giving it some thought, figure that they are better than everyone else and that rest of the world would be better off if their superiority was taken as a given. What I personally find sad about this is that many of those people, like Rabbi Berman, seem to be good people, just misguided.

@eff@mastodon.social The EFF does a good job of describing the pitfalls of age verification tools. It also admits that there are needs for tools like this. Perhaps instead of criticizing the approach taken by California, Australia, and other places, the EFF could propose some alternatives? Surely the EFF isn't saying that we have to simply live with the fact that the Internet is shit.

@Newhereish@mastodon.social @angusm@mastodon.social We are in agreement then. I think that the solution is to make social media financially liable for its content. For example, it should be easy for a woman to sue a X (for example) for an offensive deep fake. The penalties should be in the hundreds of thousands of $ per page view.
Damage to children caused by social media should be the same. Currently suing a social media company in the US, UK and EU is mostly about proving that the social media company should be held liable for its content. That needs to change.

I don't think the improvement of regular search engines make AI waste of energy, water, and air worth it.

A product that people will pay enough to cover its cost. They want to simultaneously make an excuse for why it is taking so long while making gormless investors think it is just around the corner.

1) This is a good idea but...
2) It will never be implemented because platforms make all there money through various uses of that data they collect about users.
3) It would not protect kids against behavior of other users, some adults and some kids, on the platfroms.

@Newhereish@mastodon.social @angusm@mastodon.social Agreed but we should keep in mind that social media companies make money from controversy so they are not at all likely to police bad behavior unless they are published.
For example, during the Sean Combs trial an incredible amount of AI slop depicting celebrities having sex Diddy garnered YouTube millions of page view. Clearly YouTube should police this sort of thing, but hey, millions of page views.
I think the problem with the "public space" philosophy, which is well meaning, is ignores the fact that social media companies are not public and do not act in the public's interest. They act in their stock holder's financial interests.
