@Savagejen@mastodon.social I don't think the people undervalued me, but Bosch has upper limits on how much they were allowed to reward someone who looked like an IC. The organisation failed me, but the people were good.

A weird feeling coming back to game development after a few years. Something as simple as learning Godot is showing me how many places bugs can hide in game systems.

Because of how complex games are, many decisions are left unmade. These defaults often lead to subtle bugs. For instance, as I work through the 2D game tutorial, I can sense many potential general issues with Timers firing when their receiver is no longer ready or with which timeline they are associated.

I switched out the #arduino based #cnc shield approach and have gone with a teensy4.1 instead. Thought you @bloognoo@retro.pizza would appreciate the breadboard screwed to the controller panel.

I will be available for work from July. I'm taking my time to find the right place, e.g. I have not even updated my cv yet. I spent ~20 years writing games in C++, then ~5 years working in safety related low level automotive where I ended up writing more Python than C++. I enjoy writing offline and UI based tools, optimization of code and processes, documentation writing and structuring, and coaching and mentoring others. I wonder what my next step will be.

Ever wondered why Design Patterns didn't take off? Did you ever wonder how they became so all-pervasive but also so empty and soulless? Those were the sparking thoughts behind this book. It's taken four years of research and way too much of my spare time. Go check out Unresolved Forces: https://www.unresolvedforces.com/

At the end of all this, when Trump's term in office ends, and when the people of the United States start to see the world as a place they are in and not a place they own, is someone at a newscasting corporation going to announce, loud and clear, that this era was actually all a skit named The Aristocrats?

Stuff has been going missing from my fridge. I wasn't sure what was happening until I noticed this:

Kinda sad about llms and em dashes. I learned to use them in writing due to all the old works I read by Christopher Alexander, and then found out how to use them correctly for myself. Unresolved Forces (www.unresolvedforces.com) uses them a fair amount for the asides and sub points of a sentence, but I fear people will think I used an LLM to write it, even though LLMs weren't a thing when I wrote the bulk of the content.

The next question is, do I revert to my old, less elegant style now?

I have tried the Pentel graphgear pencils, but I keep going back to the Uni kuru toga. The rotating lead is very good for consistent writing. Never gets the flat that all other mechanical and non mechanical pencils suffer from.

@ekuber@hachyderm.io yes, this happens so much because of how they're represented. I explain what happens at a deeper level in the book, going into how they aren't really replaced by language features but only seem that way because of how they were documented in the GoF book. It was fascinating researching this stuff and figuring out what happened and why.

@Rylik "does not read data" is the important bit. You've got a constant or generator with some initial state that can be changed during the generation, but that's not streamed, so doesn't count as data in the larger sense. Bear in mind, I wrote this 7 years ago, I probably still agree with 90% of the book, but there will be 10% I have had new thoughts on. So, use critical thinking and go beyond my musings.

@hengymrohebwlad@mstdn.social quite right. However, there are thousands of other patterns which aren't just "OO does function pointers badly" :D

Maple is really quite annoying to work with. It's taking ages to plank this stuff with my tools. I only have a small bandsaw, so it's cutting 140mm wide planks at about 0.5mm per second. This is going to take forever!

@superluminal@mastodon.gamedev.place nice. I did something similar to make it so we could output the memory dumps (all allocations and where they were allocated from) on the Skywalker Saga. Went from 64gb of callstacks and logs to less than 10mb (which was the goal because that was the upper limit of our jira ticket attachments, 😂).

@PeterSommerlad@mastodon.social it is in my not very humble opinion that your work was significantly more useful than the GoF book. Thank you for your contributions to software engineering!

@drj@typo.social yes, i thought the same way at the start of my research. Probably because they had incorporated the solutions mentioned in the GoF book, but oddly, they had not incorporated the patterns.
