Bin trotzdem noch ehrlich, weil so erzogen und mein Wertesystem in die Richtung weist, kann es mir heute aber auch leisten. Nicht jedem geht es so. Beobachtung: Ehrlichkeit gewinnt keine Wahlen - dreiste Lügen schon.

@stiv@mastodon.social @thephd@pony.social i just started using them a bit with gcc 16.1 and it is very relieving wrt putting stuff in header files and try to hide helpers in a detail namespace. what you don't export, won't be seen accidentally.

@doMCon@mastodon.social @xahteiwi@fedifreu.de Ich (als Institutsleiter) habe gekündigt als die HS-Leitung mich zwingen wollte mein Institut völlig anders zu organisieren. Kurz nach mir sind ca 50% der wiss. mitarbeitenden des Instituts auch gegangen. insgesamt wurde mit der neuen HS Führung ein massiver Brain Drain angestossen, bei dem viele gute Leute (Profs) innerhalb von 2Jahren weg gegangen sind. (aus diversen sich kumulierenden Verschlechterungen).

@cstross@wandering.shop @ed1conf@bsd.network @joXn@wandering.shop @benfry@information.garden @mjtsai@mastodon.social where i worked as a unix trainer in the 1980s all slide sets where done in nroff and drawn on a HP multi-color plotter. so i had my share of *roff and vi (which I also taught), today I create my material in markdown and render with pandoc to a variety of target formats (HTML, Latex-PDF, docx). the ability to have your own filters gives me the 1980s vibes like with *roff.

@jbrains i observed people intensively using mocking frameworks that made them not suffer from the many dependencies they created. thus leading to entangled designs that become hard to change, because the entanglement is represented in the tests. manual mocking at least makes one aware that you have a dependency. also in C++ value types / functional style and compile-time generic code has become more popular in favor of "virtual " leading to fewer direct dependencies.

@markusseifert another example why hyphenation in english is important. afaik esp Japanese speakers can end up with noun sequences that can be read in multiple ways, because it is normal in their native language. ( i don't know anything about other languages that also might do this)

@jbrains i gave a talk "mock objects considered harmful " on a C++ conference. the worst are mocking frameworks that automate mocking.

@mhoye @jonathankoren similarly 7 9s chance of undefined behavior in C++ integer multiplication due to overflow. so probable with random Input that optimizing away imul operations would be done by an AI-based optimizer

are the kitchen fronts glossy lacquer (how many layers) or glossy sheeting(not sure i use the correct english terminology) what is the radius used at the edges? we are currently waiting on the third attempt of our glossy kitchen fronts to be done in a way that we ordered. problems mostly on the edges. white might be worse than red.

could be, i worked on the MISRA C++ guidelines and taught/teach software engineering.

many run with the herd... and if google and llvm are doing it, it must be good. sadly. now, nobody knows how to actually compile and build stuff anymore. they use incomprehensible tools with magic built in.

in my experience it is the same in other branches of software as well.

@TwraSun@mastodon.social Schweiz vermögenssteuer ist Kantonal. ich weiss nicht ob alle Kantone das haben. was es auch noch gibt ist das fiktive Einkommen "Eigenmietwert", das wird aber abfeschafft. Nachgeschaut: alle Kantone haben Vermögenssteuer im Promillebereich (also unter 1%)

@lefticus does it support "import std;" ? I fail to manage to compile an import std hello world on mac using gcc15.2 with a linker error. Any ideas?

Did anybody successfully use C++ import std; on a mac with G++-15 and cmake 4.2.3 ? I got as far as a linker error missing std module init and am too much of a cmake newbie to figure out anything working. #cpp #cppmodules #cppimportstd #cmake

ok, they do industrial lacquer, which is a different thing than our kitchen. Bulthaup couldn't do the stuff we wanted/designed.
