I've seen questions about the #instructure #canvas leak, to the effect of "why's the data so dangerous if there's nothing financial in it?"
There are identifiers, for one thing.
But I think the real threat is... look, students send instructors some really heavy and confidential stuff in Canvas messaging sometimes. Health stuff. Family stuff. Relationship stuff. Occasionally even crime stuff.
I really am relieved that I direct students to email. I feel horrible for what could happen.
Has nobody suggested that a lot of the supposed vulnerabilities this Mythos gizmo claims to have found are bullshit?
Because that's what we've seen with genAI bug reporting so far. Vast quantities of generated bug reports are bullshit.
I don't understand why Mythos would be any different. Yet I just read a piece by somebody I thought was reputable enough to put in my feedreader that swallowed "Mythos vulns are Big Scary News" hook line and sinker.
I will say, if you're going to a conference where Library Freedom Project is exhibiting, they have THE BEST stickers and buttons.
Also the hoodie I bought from them is every bit as warm and comfy as advertised.
(It has the LFP logo on the front and "AI IS NOT INTELLIGENCE, IT'S IDEOLOGY" on the back. I fully plan to wear mine to the next College of Computing and AI all-staff meeting because I will never be broken of being an enfant terrible.)

Am I surprised? No. Am I pissed off? Yeah.
Okay, it's happened.
The Moment.
The Moment When I Add A Last-Minute Slide To My Talk Because of a Conversation Over Coffee
that thing where you see a sealion reply-guy RIP-my-mentions tsunami coming and you mute the culprit toot immediately
(muting is such a great thing, thank you Mastodon for implementing muting)
Because I got an email about this yesterday...
"Protecting Patrons with Digital Vendors," my Public Library Association conference presentation, is available with talk notes at https://speakerdeck.com/dsalo/protecting-patrons-with-digital-vendors
I'll be doing a variant of it for an internal ALA audience next month.
started brainstorming for What Is Information Science course this fall
have already blown WAY past what's doable in 14 weeks
so it goes
sorry, Information Retrieval, you're probably outta here (just because hardcore IR intimidates me and I haven't the first idea how to teach it to total newbs)
I do enjoy a good April Fool's Day piss take. https://www.artefactual.com/post/superpreservation
Kicking students out of a meeting sure is saying the quiet part out loud.
I'm home. The poor confused rental car did not get the memo about the timing of the bad weather changing, and was convinced I was driving through an ice storm around Tomah.
Haven't seen a cybertruck for a few months. They all break down over the winter?
