@Honeydew@mstdn.social @Loosf@yiff.life and in general, my experience with code review is that removing bugs is significantly harder than not putting them there in the first place.

@skade@hachyderm.io @yosh@toot.yosh.is very interesting, this seems somehow related to other research I read about queuing theory, where an important result is that you have to have extra capacity to handle statistical fluctuations in requests duration, otherwise, while average throughput may remain constant, average queue length/waiting time tends to grow catastrophically

@klausblog@mastodon.social @jmaris@eupolicy.social in pretty much any mountain location in Italy you spot who actually lives there by the Panda 4×4 (possibly the original version, generally called "Panda 16") and (more recently) Suzuki Ignis

@lizzard @megatronicthronbanks @timonsku what generally happens is that the tab gets slightly dislodged inwards by accident (especially on multi standard sockets often used with other plug types), then the first time an actual Schuko plug gets used, the tab doesn't slide literally, but gets trapped below the plug, and if the plug is forced in the tab gets crushed between the plug and the socket. May be a quality issue with lower/multi standard sockets that make it quite common here, though.

@megatronicthronbanks @timonsku most modern devices with double isolation do not really need it, though... the purpose of earth pin is to give a low resistance discharge path to current if any live conductor were to touch the metal chassis internally (or in general if there was any dispersion on the chassis) instead of having the user touching it be the path to earth. If the chassis is all plastic that problem is already solved (and you wouldn't know what to do with an earth connection). That's why most small devices sold in Europe use the C plug, which has no earth connector and can fit into E, F, J, K, L (10A variant), N and O sockets (and maybe more).

@ratfactor You put into words something that I was ruminating on since several months, and I was reaching a very similar conclusion, thank you.

@compfu uh sorry, I got it all mixed up, in my head type C was Schuko, but it's actually the Europlug. Yes, it's explicitly meant to be compatible with type L (and many others), in Italy I think pretty much nobody even knows the difference between a type C and an ungrounded 10 A type L. Yes, it does require some more force to insert compared to a true type L, because the type C pins are slightly angled (to be compatible with several different sockets, I think even the elasticity is specified). (deleted the old posts to avoid confusion)

@lizzard @lettosprey @megatronicthronbanks @timonsku (BTW it's always the same voltage, the difference is maximum current, i.e. amps... "normal" europlugs AKA type C are generally rated only for up to 2.5 A, i.e. 600 W at 240 V, although same-sized type L are up to 10 A i.e. 2400 W; Schuko is generally rated up to 16 A i.e. 3840 W)

@megatronicthronbanks @timonsku type A is really horrible, it was a scary experience both when I used it in the USA and Japan. The flat, vertical pins have a tendency to slide out laterally/not fit tightly on most sockets, leading to situations where you have a wall wart that dongles from the wall with partially exposed pins. Also, if protective sleeves on the start of the pins do exist (to avoid touching inadvertently live pins when the plug is half inserted, nowadays standard in all non-recessed-receptacle types), they are not common at all.

@sweet @AndresFreundTec searching a bit, Jigar Kummar is an extremely common name, and in the mailing list seemed to post only to bash on the slow development/not merging of features https://www.mail-archive.com/search?l=xz-devel@tukaani.org&q=from:%22Jigar+Kumar%22 so it seems like an obvious sockpuppet; Dennis Ens has some more non-aggressive activity https://www.mail-archive.com/search?l=xz-devel@tukaani.org&q=from:%22Dennis+Ens%22 , but ultimately in that thread it felt really like a bad cop/good cop dynamic, with Lasse badly pressured in the middle.

@lizzard @megatronicthronbanks @timonsku the lateral earth connection tab on sockets does tend to get crushed if used carelessly, though (as often happens in public spaces)

@megatronicthronbanks @timonsku I mean, if you don't have a metal chassis/conductive cover what are you going to do with the earth connection once it reaches the innards of the appliance? 😬

@dode @megatronicthronbanks @timonsku yeah of course, and to have a reference potential e.g. for EM shielding, my point is: it's not a silver bullet that magically makes equipment that uses it safe and equipment that doesn't use it unsafe, there are specific engineering considerations that go into it (that generally boil down to "low resistance emergency discharge path" and "fixed reference potential to anchor otherwise floating stuff")
