I have to travel to Vienna, so I looked up my options: By train: 173,53 € non-refundable, Bahncard discount, cheapest connection, two changes. Duration: 8:52 hours - if all goes to plan. Air Austria: 110,95€ total (plus 7500 Miles and More miles) round-trip Duration: 1:10 hours This is just wrong. Taking the train needs to be more affordable and we need more high-speed trains trains in #Europe. #traintravel #climateCrisis

Just watched the #NintendoDirect and wow, that's a ton of amazing games coming to the Switch 2. I'm hyped! We are finally getting a #YokaiWatch remaster! Fans have been begging Level-5 for years and it's a seriously underrated series that was overshadowed by Pokemon in the West. Other noteworthy announcements for me: Persona 4 Revival Persona 6 Prof. Layton Eternal Anima and Stage Fright look interesting as well. The Switch 2 version of Xenoblade Chronicles Not a Metroid player myself but the Metroid Ravenous trailer looks badass. "But it's all remasters and ports..." - the way I see it - it's great to see that you don't need a 4000€ PC or a 1000€ Playstation to play some of the best games in recent years. Those complaining because they've already played Far Cry 3 or The Witcher 3 on PC/PS5 are NOT the target audience, simply as that 🤔 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76L1JKQWB8w #gaming #Nintendo #Switch2

That's pretty important news for #Nintendo fans in Europe. Nintendo will discontinue a number of controllers and accessories, notably the Switch Lite, all? Switch 1 models, NES, SNES and Sega controllers and the Pokémon™ GO Plus + autocatcher (which has been already unobtainable for a while). From the Nintendo announcement: "The below products will not be replaced by versions that contain user-replaceable batteries in Europe: Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) Controller for Nintendo Switch *Pokémon™ GO Plus + Nintendo Switch Nintendo Switch Lite Nintendo Switch – OLED Model Nintendo Switch Pro Controller SEGA Mega Drive Control Pad Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) Controller Nintendo will no longer offer the above-named products on Nintendo Store after mid-February 2027." "Did he homebrew this?" 🤔 SMT Devil Survivor inspired me to finally mod my 3DS :trainer: I don't know how this got past Nintendo, but the game literally begins with a protagonist handing out consoles - that absolutely look like Nintendo 3DS consoles - with custom firmware and another person hacking the encryption 😂 @COMPU73E@retro.pizza @irgndsondepp@gts.da-miez.de#SMT #ShinMegamiTensei #Nintendo3ds #NintendoDS

"Avoid pirated copies if you want the author to be paid." Or, you know - maybe offering any other way of purchasing the ebook than *exclusively* selling them on Amazon Kindle would make it more likely that people buy your book? 🤔 I thought I'd see what the hype over #DungeonCrawlerCarl is all about but I don't use Kindle and our library has a 18 weeks waiting list, so I guess I'll pass. #bookstodon

@irgndsondepp@gts.da-miez.de @COMPU73E@retro.pizza Look what I just found. I think I paid between 1000-1600 yen per game (5-9 EUR). The Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor series has A LOT of dialogue and text messages and no furigana, so I didn't even try to play the game in Japanese yet. The previous owner sunk a lot of time into the game.. 141 hours and level 99 🤯 I didn't have the heart to delete a save file, I'll have to dump the rom and save files first before starting a new game... one day 😄 #SMT #NDS #gaming #JRPG

🏋️ Completed my first #powerlifting meet as a spotter/loader this weekend at our gym's summer max-out and thankfully everything went well 😅 Many new PRs, everyone had fun and the adrenaline and dopamine rush on that platform was real. Had a proper workout myself 😂 I've spotted in training before, but not in a competition with judges and IPF rules. Got some helpful feedback and learned a thing or two. I had a good time, 10/10 can recommend, will do that again :vaultboy:#gym

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin is a wonderful book about love, friendship, love for video games and game development in the 90's with plenty of nerdy references and it's only £0.99 on Kobo right now. I don't know why they call it "The perfect beach read and million-copy bestseller" but I can 💯 recommend it 😄 https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/tomorrow-and-tomorrow-and-tomorrow-6 #books #bookstodon #gaming

Had a short break on the North Sea coast, staying in a sleepy seaside village that used to be a popular summer destination in the 70s or 80s. Rainy and windy, but having the whole beach to yourself was lovely. Spent the day drinking coffee, eating cake, fish and chips and watching the tides and the container ships pass by. There wasn't much else to do really. Dinner was served until 7pm, most restaurants were closed by 8 🤷‍♂️ #Nordsee #NorthSea #beach #traintravel #travel

I've migrated my #digiKam database from SQLite to a local MariaDB today and the difference is night and day 😍 According to the manual, SQLite with WAL on a SSD is perfectly fine for 100K images and more - anecdotally, it handled up to 300K just fine.

But 400K images were pushing it. digiKam became sluggish and unresponsive when opening large folders from NAS. Now it doesn't break a sweat. There is a build-in migration tool, the whole process took maybe 15min. Shoutout to the digiKam team, awesome work 💪

https://docs.digikam.org/en/setup_application/database_settings.html#mysql-versus-sqlite

#foss #photography

Just in case you're wondering how I ended up with 400K images...

#SteamMachine prices and pre-order waiting list? is up. I'm not tempted but I like the "fits in your living room" concept and the exchangeable front covers. The prices are obviously higher than a comparable Mini-PC two years ago. But this cube is presumably Steam-optimized, Ai demand has driven up component prices everywhere and the lowest spec costs about the same as a PS5 Pro. Even just a current graphics card for a gaming pc costs still a lot more. I'm pretty sure there is a market for this neat little gaming cube, even at these prices. https://store.steampowered.com/hardware/steammachine #Steam #gaming

Interesting read about why we keep so much stuff. Guilty as charged:

"Jordan identifies three common patterns: the “aspirational self” keeps gym equipment and untouched language course textbooks, proof of who we intend to become; the “sunk-cost self” holds on because too much money was spent; and the “nostalgic self” holds on to what Jordan calls “spirit tokens”, objects kept as proof of a former self. Men and CD collections are her go-to example. The Radiohead album isn’t really about music; it is about the person who knew about Radiohead before everyone else.

Underneath the spirit token is the fear of losing a self you once recognised. That is not trivial. But awareness of it creates a choice: do you want to keep living in a museum of who you were, or make room for who you are?"

I'm currently revisiting #qobuz and it just occured to me that there is no native streaming service app (afaik) that can organize albums (or playlists) into collections. It's so simple and I'm sure many people prefer to sort their music in some meaningful ways without having to run their own media server or pay for something like Roon. While Qobuz doesn't have collections natively, there is this excellent third-party open source app QBZ for linux desktops that does exactly that. I can finally organize albums into "my top of the year" or thematically. And there is more - it can also add local folders and Plex servers to your library (Jellyfin is the the works) and filter by format and quality etc. - really expands the limited functionality of the Qobuz client. I wish there was something like that for #Tidal 🤔 https://qbz.lol/ https://github.com/vicrodh/qbz #music #album
QBZ

The end of the line

QBZ was never trying to fight Qobuz. It simply ended up exactly where those two worlds collide.

RE: @brunty@brunty.social

Paul Tassi is sad and angry - like most Guardians today: "Destiny could have ended with a Final Shape bang and regrouped to bring us the sequel it deserved. Instead, it has slowly melted into nothingness, and at best, will exist as a mere shadow of itself. It deserved better than this. So did its developers. So did its players."

I've had some requests for permissions to use images from people, zines or orgs and it's always nice if people find a photo interesting enough for some sort of publication. @nixCraft@mastodon.social As much as I liked flip phones back in 2006, this seems too much of an expensive gimmick for me. If their selling point is "no social media" etc. - well, any phone can do that for a lot less than 500 dollar, there are plenty of apps for minimalist, distraction-free setups and I prefer to control these kind of things myself. I like the audio headphone jack though.

@elduvelle Not a platform, but you could look into ESG filtered (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and/or SRI (Socially Responsible Investing) ETF's as investment vehicles. These fonds aim to exclude problematic companies by filtering for certain criteria such as fossil industry etc. However, it's often not that easy and they may only exclude the worst offenders. And there is an argument to be made that filtering some fonds like world ETF's could defeat their purpose (diversification) - but that's personal preference.

@fringemagnet@sunny.garden Yeah, that unnecessary gendering tripped me up too and there are plenty of old USB cables and ancient A/C adapters I should probably start with. The way I understand it, he isn't suggesting to get rid of all CDs - just the things that are no longer part of your "now".

I tend to keep too many things purely for sentimental reasons / nostalgia and getting rid of these things takes a lot of effort and is exhausting, so the idea of "narrating an object before releasing it: to say what it meant, who it came from and what chapter of life it represents" kinda resonates with me.

Like "I've bought my first digital camera after school after saving up and working a summer job, it served me well, but it's now a relic of the 90's that longer has any practical use and it's taking up a shoe box sized space."

And looking back at some of the music I've bought in the 90's - some albums were definitely a bit pretentious I will probably never listen to them again. I'm still listening to Radiohead and Thom Yorke's new stuff though 😄
