@mrc@mastodon.berlin I just had the info that this "they take ages too produce fruit" is an legend, just looked it up to be sure and apparently they take roughly 20-30 years. Which is too long to wait and see I guess, but hopefully you will be still alive ;) And trying one as a bonsai sounds exciting- never tried this either!

@mrc@mastodon.berlin I would put them in pots and wait till you know if they are male or female. Female trees produce the fruits that stink horribly 😬 And not to be even more of a party pooper, but it's also important to keep in mind that ginko has basically zero environmental value (compared to other trees), the tree is toxic to many/most insects... (That's partly why decades ago people thought it's great for cities, but we should learn from their mistakes.)

@LJ@zirk.us @quixoticgeek@social.v.st Would 2nd this! To check frost dates my go-to is weather spark, they have growing season graph + some other helpful weather insights! Pots or greenhouse shouldn't be an issue. In-ground would be trickier. Tomatoes germinate best around 20-25°C and that first growth period might be actually quicker when you start them now. Most of middle and northern Europe you wouldn't put them outdoors till mid-may anyways.

@usmu@kind.social Yes, it made rounds that there is a "(strong) nationalist / anti-refugee sentiment" - but I didn't realise it's that severe... The video in that article gave me chills, and I grew up in a nazi-infested area, I take that shit seriously but had to get a thick skin and rather get angry than chilled. @LJ@zirk.us @quixoticgeek@social.v.st Does your balcony gets flaming hot in summer? (Mine is usually +10-15°C warmer than the surrounding area, that's why I'm considering this.) If so and if you are really invested in having those tomatoes: Get yourself a soil thermometer and find the sweet spot to let them germinate. But as a rough rule: Uncovered soil in a pot can be +/- 5-10°C warmer or colder (depending on shade or sun) than the air around it. Might be worth placing a few pots in different places then.

@Simira@oslo.town @quixoticgeek@social.v.st Absolutely we are 😆 I have some left over too 😂 And even if no-one has spare ones: Some varieties need breaking out of branches ("suckers"), some gardeners swear by this even in situations where others wouldn't; and sometimes a branch just breaks of. You can get those branches to root! Another "quick" source for tomato plants! (:

Sammelt heavily Daten und gibt sie mit sehr großer Wahrscheinlichkeit (2025 zB in etwa 85% der angefragten Fälle) direkt an russische Sicherheitsbehörden etc. weiter... War früher wohl anders, aber dann floh der Gründer und es gab einige "Deals". Weiß nicht wie es mit dem indizieren ist, aber damit zu suchen... Muss wohl jede*r selbst entscheiden...

Or are you hoping the US actually overthrow the government in Iran so you will have to pay higher reparations but at least to better people?
