Alright, giving this #MeshCore a shot. Flashed my personal carry radio over to that and will be wandering around #Columbus #Ohio today for work and will be keeping an eye on my radio to see if I get any hits.

Testing the migration from #Meshtastic

New Project Zomboid Lore explanation video! Hopefully you'll like it; we spent quite a bit of time sifting through game files to extract out the various stories and newspaper clippings.

Also gave us an excuse to tear around Muldrough for a while, which is always fun.

OMFG, hanging in an elevator ceiling and get a spam call on Google Meet! I don't even use that, why is it on my phone?!? @GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social it's very sad I can't install your distro on my Nothing phone.

Anyone know an alternative OS I can throw on this device to enable me to uninstall BS Google applications that I don't need (IE: all of them)?

Yes, I now have hundreds of Established connections that are verrrrryyyyyy sllooooooowllllyyy transferring this "very important information", but so do you Facebook, and whose servers cost more to just sit there waiting 120 days for a 10MB file to be transferred?

Peculiar; Facebook appears to be brute forcing registrations on my Mastodon instance. Weird.

Ok, have fun with this "small" 10MB gzip file that definitely doesn't contain 10GB worth of 0's if it's decompressed.

#MeshCore in theory has sensor support, but I didn't have any luck getting my BME280 recognized, so I used a Raspberry Pi instead! It can still respond on the mesh network too.

Next up: installing HomeAssistant to see if it can send environmental data to be logged / stored in a pretty UI.

Calling tinkerers, hardware hackers, and mesh enthusiasts:

I have the following components:

  • Raspberry PI Zero 2 W
  • BME280 (temp/humidity/pressure)
  • 128x64 OLED display
  • Heltec V3 loaded with MeshCore

I have some rudimentary code that can pull sensor data, meshcore-cli is working via USB/serial connection, and can access the display.

Now I just need ideas on what to do with these parts. Any thoughts?

@tasket@infosec.exchange @iode@mastodon.online AH, I was wondering what ever happened to Cyanogenmod; I used to run that on my (I think) LG G1 back in the day. I see LineageOS has a build for the Nothing 2 A065 (my phone model), so I think I'll give that a try when I have some time to flash it. Thanks for the info!

@rockhhock@zug.networkhttps://bitsnbytes.dev/posts/2026-05/pi-mesh-weather-sensor.html Full technical doc of how this system works. The pi communicates with the Mesh network via any LoRA radio, in my case a Heltec V3 connected via USB. The software is published on my Github and will be licensed under AGPLv3, (I need to slap that license onto it). It's just a Python service which subscribes to the mesh network and waits for events. https://github.com/BitsNBytes25/Raspberry-Pi-Mesh-Weather The responses are currently just in English and the responses can probably be better tuned by someone who understands weather better than I do, but it at least returns the raw values if nothing else.

ok, I've got some questions for users of #MeshCore

How do you handle custom sensors and modules? In Meshtastic they generally "just work" after setting the pin configuration, but I'm having zero luck. Currently fighting with trying to get a NEO-6M GPS module working with a Heltec V3 radio.

On Meshtastic it worked as soon as I set the pin configuration, but in MeshCore, it's just "Nope, you don't have GPS."

Current route is looking at the code to try to compile it myself, as the pin definitions are hard coded during build, but not having much luck there either.

Is this really the expected user experience for operators of MeshCore; having to compile your own firmware?

I get it that this is enthusiast territory, but bloody hell; it's like expecting any Linux user to need to compile their own Kernel if they want to plug headphones into the system.

#MeshCore / #RaspberryPI #Weather bot is coming along quite nicely!

  • 🥶 FREEZING! It's 0°C (32°F) - Just stay home and get some hot chocolate!
  • 🧊 It's currently 8°C (46°F) - Stay inside or bundle up!
  • ☁️ A bit chilly at 12°C (54°F) and rain may be on the horizon.
  • ☀️ Perfectly comfortable at 20°C (68°F). Go out for a nice walk.
  • 🥵 It's a hot and muggy 33°C (91°F) but feels like 35°C (95°F). Take water & limit activity.

https://github.com/BitsNBytes25/Raspberry-Pi-Mesh-Weather

Still waiting on some cables so I can mount it properly, but it's able to reply on the Mesh with current conditions and sends them to a #HomeAssistant server for logging.

@scrivy@hachyderm.io The radio was running Meshtastic which could handle environmental sensors. Meshcore on the other hand does NOT support them for most devices, so I needed something separate to handle them. The Pi will be listening on the mesh, probably on the 'weather' channel, and will reply to people asking for the temperature. It will also provide weather metrics on the local network. If I can get it to interface an MQTT even better, but I don't have anything which uses that protocol, so I'm undecided on that currently. It may be nice to bridge remote Mesh nodes which the pi will also handle, but one thing at a time.

@doingfedtime Nice research, and wonderful implementation! Rather click-baity header image, but it works to do the job. The article itself is very dry, concise, well sourced with first-party sources, and has just enough personality to keep it interesting without needed to fallback to emotional arguments and rhetoric; precisely how journalism is supposed to be. Reporting on the news and not your feelings / your employers feelings on the news. Quick note though, you can add a tag in the header of blog posts to attribute back to your Mastodon user so reposts of your article will show attribution back to you.

My #Weather sensor worked well over the night, but now that the sun is out the temperature spiked and humidity plummeted.

Unfortunately the north side of the building it's mounted on is brick so not ideal for easy mounting. I may need to come up with a new idea for where to place this...

For as good as #NextCloud is, I'm always impressed with just how BADLY it fucks up #Markdown anytime I think it's a good idea to try to use the web interface to edit a file. If I type "[ something ]", I did not mean to type backslash bracket! I just want to insert a fucking link!

Now I have to go through the entire document and fix every instance of "[" because you thought it would be a good idea to escape EVERYTHING in the document!

Hmmmmm, so #LineageOS is great, but it does present one issue. While I can install APKs with no issue, one in particular doesn't like to run; CashApp.

While I can do some operations with the web interface of cash.app, it doesn't seem to provide all necessary functions.

SO.... do I withdraw all my funds from CashApp and close my account or what?

@GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social Oh yeah, it's now disabled; I am just used to Linux where if I don't want an application, I can uninstall it. If I don't want a desktop, I can remove it. I really don't like using an OS where I don't have the freedom to remove what I don't want. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on what device you guys support next for when I eventually upgrade this device, albeit hopefully that won't be for a few more years. I like the Nothing hardware, but the software has just gone to absolute trash.
