@gatesvp @blogdiva @Nicovel0 I have the same reaction when right-wing conservative types are anti-cycling. Cycling ticks so many preppers' boxes: • No government paperwork • No surveillance • No big corp lock-in • Use your own power (literally 'stand on your own two feet’) • No reliance on foreign oil • It is the number one freedom tool.

@ccferrie@mastodon.ie RTÉ are serious offenders here. Every warning of dangerous heat is illustrated by a library pic of happy kids jumping into the forty foot. It's long past time the public were made aware people die from this heat, people die in a lot of distress. It is not fun for everyone.

Interesting but still doesn't solve the problem that 50% of pedestrians want you to sound your bell, and the other 50% don't want it.

@GeofCox I’ve always wondered what the cost of fares collection is. Systems, apps, account management, back office, ticket machines, readers, maintenance, inspectors, updates, fare negotiations teams, press releases, explanatory documents. It’s quite a cost. I'm in Chamonix at the moment, and I’m driving and cycling rather than using the bus because this is just too complicated for me.

One of my cycling buddies is a senior surgeon in the NHS nearing retirement.

He believes the UK’s falling life expectancy is purely down to austerity and cuts in social care. Every other variable has improved: diet; smoking; air quality; RTC survivability.

@KimSJ@mastodon.social @baz@mastodon.scot One thing I would really miss is my email address, I've had it since they first released mac.com addresses. It's not just the legacy sign-ups - I can change them - it’s the fact in 25 years use it ‘just works’. I've set up domain name and hosting services for various friends and family over the years, and it is frustrating how often they need tinkering with. Hosts go out of business, get bought over, server addresses change, things break. Mac.com just works.

@baz@mastodon.scot @KimSJ@mastodon.social I've been feeling the same, it's come on me for a while - seeing Tim Apple licking Trump’s backside for example. I've been embedded in the ecosystem since 1991, early adopter of every flavour of .Mac, MobileMe, iCal, you name it, because they were ethical, and their stuff ‘just worked’. Both of those positions have changed. Eg the latest Contacts.app on Mac is childishly awful.

@helenczerski There are plenty of very early films on YouTube, some made from trams, of Victorian and Edwardian roads. It's fascinating to watch the crowds of people on them. It's obvious roads belonged to everyone. Not just children playing but vendors and their wares, people chatting, people strolling, crossing, cycling, delivery men, workers, people busking, all of life was there - not just motor carriages passing at speed. We have lost all this.

@clickhere @dec23k @Rubelicious I don’t get that. Just as cyclists on the roads don't like being buzzed by motors, I can fully understand pedestrians on shared paths don't like it from bikes. There is a small part of my daily route that is shared and passes through a barrier pinch point. I always slow to a stop if necessary to allow walkers priority.

@carnage4life@mas.to I think only now we are waking up to the damage Reagan and Thatcher did in their respective countries. The dislocation, alienation and anger which drove the Brexit vote, and is in danger of putting Reform in office, is in large part a result of Thatcher's policies and Cameron's (Thatcher tribute act) austerity policies.

@Tho99 @clickhere I think a hundred years of bullying motors have skewed the pitch. Walkers now equate a cycle’s bell to a car's horn, and most drivers use their car's horn as ‘GET OUT OF MY WAY’. Especially as they have become louder and louder (my Seat Ibiza's horn is an amusing little squeak). The existence of a bell on a bike was intended to be: ‘I’m here’.

@Techaltar In the same vein, UK users of Autotrader.co.uk should be aware any links to its ads will contain the postcode you searched with. As UK postcodes are very geographically specific, this is potentially a serious bit of self-doxing. Here is a random example with Buckingham Palace's postcode (SW1A 1AA).
