I've been writing software for 4+ decades. I recently moved from Google to DataDog so I could have fun doing it again.
I talk mostly about software development, but I'm also a fan of things that make me laugh.

@Strandjunker@mstdn.social OTOH, perhaps the US crippling their ability to operate globally while the orange idiot is the president is the best thing for the world right now.

@mcnado@mstdn.social Senator Schumer has disappointed me with lack of spine over and over again during his tenure. I was happy he replaced pothole Al, but at least D'Amato knew how to fight dirty to get things done.

@nina_kali_nina@tech.lgbt OH dang. You reminded me that garlic scapes are awesome, but you can't get them in the stores often enough.

@acsawdey@fosstodon.org @linear@nya.social @davidgerard@circumstances.run Nice. IIRC, in XToolkit, all the strings identifiers were collected into a single array and reference by index. So there was a .h file of lines like
#define XmFoo (&_strings[42])
instead of #define XmFoo "foo".
Imagine the fun when someone introduced a new id IN THE LEXICAL POSITION of the list, rather than at the end. All newly compiled code was suddenly incompatible with the installed libXm.a. (and Xm, because a Motif release did this, not the X team themselves).

I installed a roof rack on my car today. The instructions called for tightening the bolts to 22nm. Let's face it. It's just a roof rack, I could just hand tighten it. But.... an excuse to buy a torque wrench. The wrench wins.

OMG. I know things have gotten bad when I find Russ Douthat of the #brokentimes is on the same side as me in something.

Sadly, few in Santos' area cares about news or facts. Over the last two decades, places like Great Neck have become havens for fascists. Oddly, most of them are Jews and non-white Christians, who'll be the first up against the wall when the whiter fascists take over. I don't understand their thought process here.

Listening to a backlog of vinyl LPs I bought last year. Do I file Roger Waters under W, or with the Pink Floyd albums. W is pedantically correct, but I'll never find it again if I do.

Pro tip for men over 50. That mustache scissor you bought in your douchebag 20s, and has been sitting in your bathroom drawer for 30+ years, makes a great nose hair clipper.

There was a big bowl of pesto sauce in the cafeteria at work today. Just poured myself a boal of pretzel chips, heavily topped with pesto. Got a good garlic buzz going now. Not feeling guilty in the slightest.

Why does Apple TV even have a the ability to cast to my thermostat? Something has gone horribly wrong with networking.

My doorbell takes a picture of my mail carrier every day. I'm sure this 10s of millions of times a day. I'm looking forward to the shit-show when DHS dumbly uses (illegally acquired) Google and Ring data and declares the entire US postal service (along with every FedEx and UPS employee) as under suspicion for, basically, being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Stock tip: I'm long on Sharpie. They are going to sell a zillion of the bold black markers for crossing out trump's signature.

I think Pam Bondi got lucky. She may only eventually be disbarred and potentially face prison. Her successors will probably be pressured into doing thing that will bring them before a war crimes tribunal.

@timbray@cosocial.ca surprisingly, that was pretty thoughtful. The sad thing though is that I think any pushback is impossible in very late stage capitalism.

@cstross@wandering.shop You had me until the last few workds "CUI spec". The only good thing that came out of CUI was an expectation that you had keyboard focus semantics, where TAB moved focus correctly and space pressed the default button.
