just some white she/her older millennial. "a villain that fights by the book of arithmetic." will be your book reading coach and cheerleader if you want, please ask. not a professional account. i hate reply guys and will make it weird. same with doomers
i don't buy a lot of physical books (i probably own . . . 80 books) but i'm really excited to own this one by catherine lacey. i just finished lacey's "the answers," and i also loved "biography of x." this book has two covers, and is divided in half between a memoir and a novella.
i'm really lucky that my dietary restrictions don't kill me, i don't have celiac or an epipen type of allergy. but it is also . . . stressful, tiring, depressing, to have almost every food choice be a calculus of how much i want to feel bad later. i don't like it
let alone when someone else is involved in the decision or i'm trying to socially placate people who don't understand being sick. that also sucks very bad
Let's say you lived on a big spaceship or station like those in "Star Trek" or "The Expanse" etc. You can't just build a football field or national park or anything, but what feasible stuff would you want to have? Is there stuff you wouldn't care about having?
Very open ended prompt here haha, just curious if others have thought about this while watching space stuff. Boost for me please? 🔄
eta: uh oh . . . the men who think they're funny have arrived unfortunately

"I do not see this work as a ‘down side’ to love. On the contrary, I think that working for something – having complex conversations and making compromises and listening and respecting boundaries – makes the end result even more beautiful."

Embarrassing cowards:
"The Wikimedia Foundation’s statement and its frequently asked questions section is full of very carefully-worded language that is common among companies and organizations that have fought against unionization. For example, the FAQ includes a long section about the benefits that Wikimedia Foundation already offers its staff, and the statement suggests that there is a 'wide range of views on unionization' among employees."
Gretchen Felker-Martin's monster in "Cuckoo" is a metaphor for both bigotry and those who profit from bigotry, and I'm really struck by this description:
"Now everywhere it turns it finds only itself, a starving animal the size of a planet curled in a panicked ball and shitting into its own open mouth to quell its hunger pangs."

this glass has a little wiggle in its walk! what a beautiful beverage
I'm about 1/3 through Emma Straub's "American Fantasy" and really liking it -- a fun and bittersweet take on people attending and hosting an aging boy band's annual fan cruise. I tend to cringe back from books that are described as sweet, funny, or heartwarming (blecch), but this is not that and is not cloying at all.
I have problems with "The Pitt," like the very inflated body count, roughly 4% of all of Pittsburgh's ER deaths for an entire year:
"The Pitt is just another medical soap opera, but the decision to confine the season to one real-life day means they must condense all the usual hacky storylines and moments into that day. They kept the high body count, crammed into just one shift for all these medical workers. If anything, it’s worse than a soap opera."

-
Are these cats famous musicians? Yes, they helped reinvigorate the post-shoegaze scene in Chicago. No autographs please, they don't have thumbs
-
Is that a cartoony yellow shoe? Yes, my partner owns these and the littler cat likes to use them as a chair (?), that is his artistic process
i had a dream where my pal @Tijn@dosgame.club (whom i've never met!!!) got famous for translating songs into dutch and i flew to netherlands to stay in a capsule hotel and listen to his dutch songs

which muppet has the highest kill count? (this is one of my favorite youtubers. the comments are also very funny and informative. a lot of people have thought about muppet violence)
I'm watching "The Pitt," so far it isn't at all different from popular past hospital shows besides that it can be much gorier -- like horror practical effects.

i have "titanium court" and i must scream (but no i haven't started it yet!! but i'm excited)
eta: okay i really don't like "titanium court"! people acted like it's extremely unknowable and genre-bending -- maybe it does become that? -- but so far it's just "loop hero" with a lot of theater kid dialogue around it and a word salad of quirky nonsequiturs. very uhhh millennial coded (derogatory)
