Calm me down? I am perfectly calm.

I am merely pointing out some uncomfortable facts that most people don’t like having pointed out to them.

You, in fact, started your OP by labelling one group of people as AI “haters”.

This is a derogatory and grossly misleading label applied to a group of people who are skeptical of the rhetoric around a damaging technology.

Yet I merely point out facts like: (1) the data used to train these machines is stolen from all humanity, (b) the cost of running them is astronomical, (c) they are being used as an excuse to destroy the labour market, (d) they are being consumed by the mindless masses to make them ever more mindless, (e) nobody even understands how they work and peoples’ efforts to do so are often comical and amateurish, etc etc.

When a mathematician like Tao (or yourself) says something like “I am not interested in the technology per se, only the tool and the results it can produce” you yourself are contributing to the careless promulgation of a catastrophically damaging mind set and technology, which I see as causing untold harm to humanity.

There is a food chain of profiteers here, at the top of which sit the uber rich tech bro grifter billionaires.

This type of “person” will lie and steal and commit all manner of crimes against humanity to achieve their goal of attaining more power and money.

Tao has chosen a path that ultimately benefits these profiteering grifters.

So if you’re gonna post uncritically about that, then yeah, I’m gonna come down hard.

I would’ve expected more critical thought from you, a person who has admirably dedicated the latter part of their career to tackling problems of environment and society.

@tao@mathstodon.xyz I watched the video. The parts where you spoke were great. I can imagine a lot of folks getting value from many of the things you talked about. I particularly enjoyed the section on your self replicating liquid state machine as a toy model for Navier-Stokes blow up. It's just a tad concerning to see you interviewed by somebody who is a known grifter. This is a man who has represented himself falsely to the public for many years. He's also one or two degrees of separation away from some of the worst kinds of people. I ask this with the greatest respect for you and your work, but why are you associating yourself with this sort of person? I understand you have an academically driven interest in the intersection between mathematics and AI, but I fear that you might be doing your reputation harm in indulging folks like him. Ignore me, block me, or whatever, but please do consider the effects you are having on folks around the world.

@ozymandiaslone@mathstodon.xyz @tao@mathstodon.xyz Yes, and I should hope so! There's no doubt Terry is one of the finest mathematical minds of our generation and possibly human history. Having said that, nobody is infallible or incapable of misjudgement. In my opinion it is a giant misstep on his part to associate with this cretin. This guy literally interviews and endorses war criminals, fascist dictators and tech-bro grifters (he is one himself). It's disappointing to see somebody one has held in such high esteem exhibit such poor judgement, especially at a time in history where his rebuffal (yes I made up a word) of said fascists and war criminals and tech bro grifters could actually send a positive signal of hope and reason to folks around the world. If you haven't muted or blocked me yet, Terry, please do consider retracting this interview or offering some sort of public clarification.

@aaronhertzmann “Why not just capture high-resolution imagery from the world, instead of our selective foveation? Why don’t we have retinas densely covered with sensors, instead of only getting fine detail in the fovea? We could, hypothetically, get so much more information with retinas that are dense everywhere—all fovea, no periphery.” Eric Schwartz once calculated the mass of a brain that would be need to achieve this and came up with a number of 10,000 pounds! https://scholar.google.com/citations?view_op=view_citation&hl=en&user=vqWsd78AAAAJ&citation_for_view=vqWsd78AAAAJ:YsMSGLbcyi4C

@troy_s A ganzfeld appears white. Also a darkroom can be described as black in terms of its volume. Ultimately none of these terms are well defined without a model. That’s the central problem of psychology; namely, the habit of defining perception in self referential terms. You just end up in an infinite regress.
