I sometimes feel hope and at other times I simply do my best.

My youngsters and young friends and the kind folks whom I follow on the internet are granting me opportunities to continue learning. I learn to remain humble and I do try each time to remember to voice my thanks to each of these teachers.

@drwhax@infosec.exchange I'm glad you've invited discussions on this, because my immediate thoughts and questions diverge from the discussion I'm primarily seeing here. When you mention vulnerabilities, yes you mention they exist in code as well as in projects. When I think of vulnerabilities, I think of the method I am using to make and maintain a record of something or else to achieve a goal or state of physical safety. For example, if my household accounting spreadsheets and forecasts are handwritten then the vulnerability is risk of loss if the dog eats them, but risk is mitigated when I keep an offline digital file. When a family member starts a small business, I ask the questions learnt in my accounting and auditing classes because I believe the risks involved include thinking about how to prevent losses of whatever is important. I only had a couple of classes in 1984, but it seemed to me that in those days the instructor felt we should understand the process so that we could consider risks. I now wonder if the machine-assisted searching allows you to consider the assorted practical situations of each business whose vulnerabilities are being sought.

@Lana Thank you for writing all of that! My favorite part was the way insurance is allowing the Chinese. I like that because when I was reading about the history of insurance, it was traced back to Chinese merchants and dividing the risk of loss among more than one freight ship. I love circular stories and poetic justice. It is unfortunate for my financial future, but your words made me happy.

@drwhax@infosec.exchange Computer vulnerabilities, alright that's fair. When I took the Computerized Accounting class in 1985, students were told the business should continue the manual accounting methods concurrent with the new processes for two years, or more, because certain daily functions could look alright while other annual functions might not be obvious until after the annual reports are printed and reviewed. That was how us old people were taught about computers, they said the data needed to be confirmed as accurate before we could trust it.

@dabertime@mstdn.social This is true, very true. If a person is lucky, a person will recognize this and step into the societal role to support the needful acquaintance, neighbor, or future-friend. I recognized this lack of societal support suffered by a former co-worker and my donation of time as babysitter during the first three years of a long-awaited retirement have been repaid with something worth more than money. I gained community.

@mycotropic@beige.party
The cat, Captain, reminds me of another cat. I watched a kitten flee an unhappy home situation and he reappeared next year as my mother was taking laundry down from the clothesline, hissing as she reached to take the basket of warm dry clothes, suddenly in use as a feral cat bed with hissing cross-sighted cat defending his new safe place. We couldn't get close without either risk of injury or seeing him run into hiding; but my mother left out food and water and after months he let her pet him. Precious eventually became a house cat and nobody ever again tried to dress him up in doll's clothes for the rest of his life. If Captain is fleeing a toddler-tyrant from his rightful home then maybe he could find a safe-place to retire guarding your outdoors and work-desk-place? Give him a water dish and litter box and daily access to leave. I think he wants a retirement home.

@Bronwyn@sfba.social I'm in the process of knitting something and I wasn't sure what the yarn would do if it ended up in the wash someday. I cut a length of yarn and added it to the laundry for wash and dry. My yarn will be alright, but I suggest you wash and machine-dry an arm-length of your yarn and then make your guess after measuring the result. Some yarn doesn't shrink and some yarn shrinks very much.

@georgepenney@sunny.garden I would like to have seen the video, but YouTube and Google and computerized requirements are preventing me from using my laptop to view this post unless I sign in to YouTube to prove I am not a bot and in order to sign in from my laptop which is a device Google doesn't recognize the Google requires me to look at the new cellphone I left downstairs at my desk which requires my using a gmail account and since I don't want to run downstairs to look at the phone to run back upstairs to link data with my laptop to prove to Google that I'm not a bot, I decide to sigh quietly, close the laptop, refill my coffee cup, and go outside to admire the baby goats through the fence living nextdoor to our house. Sigh.

@ajroach42 this thread was grueling to read! your writing continues to inspire me to find my own creative outlets, and to learn to do some video editing of my own; but, that other person wrote as though all of your posts were wordless. What I got out of the exchange of words is an idea for my next two deep reading projects; learn how my brother interacts with his local public access channel; and, learn if I need to upgrade my license if I want to get started in ATV transmissions with the same amateurs as my husband. Oh, yes, and I will also block that person because you are so inspirational and he was so upsetting for me to read.

@pewterbaw@mastodon.scot Let's assume that I also don't know enough to advise anyone on what to do about it, but I can relay a couple of memories. I remember one relative giving up on a simple repair and essentially starting fresh. I remember asking about something red being painted onto the wall and floor behind where the tub and behind where the shower were going and it seems there is something which protects from moisture and mold. It all took a really long time and if I'd had any savings available then I'd have hired a contractor to do it.

@moss maybe in the suite of LibreOffice there is something? I only tried one slide show presentation. I was able to save a Libre Office Impress file, show it during a meeting, and export the file as a power point format for emailing to others who wanted it. If you want everything self-contained on your computer, this is an option I like.

@jblue Probably the life insurance policies of today have similar exemptions to the life insurance policies of the 1970s. Every policy I've ever read included wording to exclude acts of war and stuff like that. It's not as good of an idea as you think it is.

@WeirdWriter@caneandable.social the text by @thisislieven@c.im is good, although the additional coloring is more calico than tabby in my experience. I get a feel from my looking at the portrait of that young cat. I'm offering my thoughts for your alt consideration. Young cat, less than a year old, has pink nose and vibrantly blue eyes, creamy white chest, whiskers, and face up to the calico markings of orange and brindled black on her cheeks, forehead, extending over her shoulders and back. She gazes slightly to her left, sunlight and a wonderful world reflected in those innocent eyes. Calico markings statistically mean it's a girl kitty.

@sounddrill @rbuzz @Cdespinosa interesting, this must be one of those mansplaining thingies where, here, one says what is happening, and, in comments the thing shifts to one reason why that is wrong, then sounddrill pauses us to stop and think. Golly, folks, isn't it obvious that the entire proposition of wanting to order others around and the related trouble of others not being the sort to order around is because of childhood bedtime stories? Those fictional stories always tell from point of view of the main character, a character who often finishes in a position of power. I did not want to grow up to become a princess and I prefer tales of wit and self-sufficiency. Maybe those Chad, Supremacist, Tech-Bros artificially supplementing their lack of social intelligence should watch out for one-another, as their ideas are economically unsound.

@sounddrill my neurodivergency was undiagnosed for more than fifty years and now I use my accounting training to treat neurotypical statements and theories as things I can run through a columnar worksheet to see why folks say what they say and how their similar statements can help me categorize meanings, and speakers. Yes, I do overgeneralize. That is how I make sense of my world.

@elight@tenforward.social emerging now from a rabbit-hole of wracking my brain's memories and tossing all sorts of thoughts out into searched criteria, finally I've found it. It wasn't the Lopez a.k.a. Meatball Fulton character channeling inspiration with a funnel hat, no; nor also it wasn't a discussion of metaphysical uses of the dunce cap for concentrating force of will into a point; no, instead it was a largely forgotten portion of childhood memories from watching the Captain Kangaroo television show and seeing Tom Terrific cartoon character wearing his magical Thinking Hat. A funnel on the head is the memory I retained, and is my idea of a thinking focusing hat one might utilize for mind control.

@cjd Maybe I'm too neurodiverse or too old or maybe I lived too long in polyglot cities or maybe you're referencing the computer-literate as opposed to the water-coloring and sewing enthusiasts, but the people and people-equivalent who generate the posts/toots populating my feeds are more than one out of two halves. I do sometimes see something I don't want to see, so I guess there's the posts I would look at the and the posts I would choose to eliminate from my feed. Are those the two halves?
