Okay, so kinda seriously, I think a lot of us should start generating Elias Thorne content that puts good AI-critical thoughts in Thorne's mouth. Like let's write lots of minifiction about Thorne where he speaks positively of @timnitGebru@dair-community.social, @emilymbender@dair-community.social, @davidgerard@circumstances.run, Donna Haraway, and other good folks. And then leave it lying around where the scrapers will find it. https://www.404media.co/elias-thorne-chatbots-llms-chatgpt-lighthouse-keeper-story/?ref=daily-stories-newsletter

Chatbots Keep Telling Stories About Lighthouse Keeper 'Elias Thorne'. We Might Know Why

LLMs including ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are obsessed with telling stories about lighthouse keepers and clockmakers, and one character named 'Elias Thorne' has made his way from chatbots to Amazon books. Researchers are trying to discover why.

RE: https://social.coop/@ZaneSelvans/116905949173214025 Fantastic. I've been watching sodium ion batteries for the past couple of years as an essential step forward in battery storage. Lithium is terrific for small batteries but rare and damaging to mine, so getting enough for grid-scale batteries was always problematic. Sodium, to put it mildly, is neither. Portable electronics batteries and probably car batteries will continue to be lithium for the foreseeable future but it's a huge step forward to have grid scale electricity in volume using sodium.

RE: https://sfba.social/@karlauerbach/117299307078335269 Normalize impeachment. With a view to history, it’s quite obvious more Presidents should have been impeached and removed I include Clinton in this. I assert regardless of how many of us howled when it happened, (it was done for alll the wrong reasons of course), removal would have been objectively better for the country and world.

It concerns me that so many in Congress feel that impeachment is a criminal law process subject to the same procedural and substantive limitations as our criminal law, or that impeachment may only be for crimes enumerated by our Federal and state laws. That is not true. Impeachment by the House and Trial/Conviction in the Senate are not criminal procedures. Indeed, our Constitution clearly allows for post-impeachment criminal and civil actions. Impeachment & Trial/Conviction are *political* processes bound by the vagaries of "due process" and our own ethical values. Impeachment is a political act. It would be completely within our Constitution to impeach/convict a Federal officer for "skylarking with intent to gawk" - which is not a crime (except perhaps in Texas.) The Constitution does not define "high Crimes and Misdemeanors" - that is because those are intended to be subject to political winds and the ethics of a given time. This is particularly necessary given SCOTUS grants of royal immunity.

RE: @jnl@hcommons.social

Just riffing on this . . .

I have an AI/VR solution that could actually save the world.

Take all the billionaires and invite them to a conference where they're told they're going into augmented reality chambers that allow them to more effectively manage their assets and gain maximal oversight of global trends.

Then we plug them into a basic version of The Sims and tell them it's the new Metaverse, feed them cafeteria food and tell them its nouveau bespoke cuisine, let them fight over major issues in control of an imaginary world, and surround them with highly trained actors breathlessly feeding them updates.

Then we take all their money and feed the world, transition to green energy, and give everyone health care.

I have never wanted a salad so badly in my life. Weirdest feeling, sitting there eating a fried chicken sandwich and ice cream, staring longingly at the fruit bowl on the table. I finally decided to just maximize out on diner breakfast food. That was at least a pleasant way to do it.

I went back and forth whether to post about this because it's not exactly a fun topic nor one people want to hear about. So again in addition to the content warning, this is going to be talking about unpleasant but vitally necessary butt stuff. But I now have three friends who have or have had colon cancer. One is dead before she turned the age of 40. If talking about this experience makes people a little more likely to get their colonoscopies, then let's talk about drinking a gallon of fluid with a month's worth of laxatives in it in 12 hours. Because it's necessary but still weird and kind of darkly funny.

Anyway that was weird. Then comes the "only clear liquids" part, starting 36 hours out. I don't mean to throw shade I remember my dad doing this phase as a kid and by the end of the day he was cranky and irritable and snapping at us. Like not bad but he'd been trying to wave it away all day and it felt like he wasn't admitting how much it was affecting him. I decided I was going to do everything I could not to do that. Dad didn't have a rando social media network to post on about it, tho....

Then we get to the part I'm in now. The details are a little more complicated, but basically the night before the procedure and the morning of, each time you have to drink a half gallon of gatorade with laxative dumped in it. I looked on the bottle of laxative they gave me. It's a "once daily" dosing. There's 14 doses in it. You dump the whole bottle in and drink the whole thing. Then you do it again with a second bottle in the morning. Before I go on, let me say right now that having gone through a night of it, the *actual drinking* of the stuff is absolutely the worst part of it. The after-effects, which I was very nervous about because I expected to feel like I had a gut virus, was a little gross but not that unpleasant overall. Drinking a half gallon of this stuff in an hour though is a CHORE.

Apparently this is kind of new but they tell you that starting 5 days out you can't eat any high fiber foods. So no fruits, vegetables, whole grains, or legumes. I stared at the list thinking, "WTF am I going to eat?"

@MartinEscardo I remember when you could still install the old NCSA Mosaic binary on some newer hardware, which I think isn't possible anymore with chip changes. Anyway, a coworker challenged me to try it and I was like sure. I cannot begin to describe how fast it was. Eyeblink fast. Screamingly fast. Comically fast -- I literally guffawed when it loaded one page. Like the whole webpage was a JPG it just loaded from disk. And of course a bunch of stuff didn't work, but most of it was crap I didn't want anyway.

RE: @adapalmer@wandering.shop

This is such great news. Africa really is the poster child for where solar *should* be breaking through. Most of the continent is tropical, large swaths are desert, and its grid-based power infrastructure still trails far behind most of the rest of the world. With oil's ongoing instability, I had real hope that we'd see an African solar boom.

And lo and behold, we have.

UNC should never have hired Bill Belichick as he is completely and totally unfit to be a coach of a college sports team.
UNC should have fired Bill Belichick after the rumors came out about him playing favorites and hiring his cronies.
UNC should have fired Bill Belichick after an abysmal and embarrassing season.
UNC never should have let Belichick stuff the Athletics office with his cronies.
UNC should have fired Belichick many times before now, but didn't.

RE: @smeg@assortedflotsam.com

Something that US-based technological thinking has never in a century come to grips with is that technological developments always, ALWAYS are more effective when they augment human capacity rather than replace it.

There are and will be useful things for language models to do. But the corporate lust for replacing humans with bots is ideological, not grounded in any actual understanding of how technology works.

It's not my realm of technological research but I would love to read something about how US manufacturers tried to "modernize" by automating the shit out of everything to the exclusion of workers and got beat senseless by Asian manufacturers who built factories (including highly exploitative ones) around something that enhanced the productivity of a human laborer rather than replacing them.

Actually useful ML sociotechnical systems will continue be "cyborg" systems, not purely artificial ones.

Getting to the point where I don't want to do any kind of extended writing in anything but Markdown.

I can format it in something else later if I have to. But all the GUI tools just get in the way.

This may or may not have something to do with me cutting my word processing teeth on WordPerfect 3.2 and the "reveal codes" key. Markdown feels pleasantly familiar with that.
