Choosing a Linux distro to stay
Hello everyone, I need help to decide on a Linux Distribution to settle and finally stop distro hopping. I have quite some experience with Linux(1year Mint, a quarter year Arch, nixos, manjaro, fedora, suse tumbleweed and kalpa…)I have been experimenting for now almost 3 years. Now I finally want to setlle but I just don’t know where. I like Nix’s shell but don’t like installing everything in five steps(with git because my brain can stand neither the dirty tree warning nor leaving out on the git push) and I don’t need the reproducibility. I like rolling so I don’t need to reinstall or do any major update, but even more appealing is low maintenance and stability in the sense of nothing unexpectedly breaking. I’ll use the computer as an daily driver mostly for programming & 3d design, university related work, streaming and also some gaming. Thank you for your answers. #linux #distrohopping

I would go with fedora, but I don’t want a company behind my distro.

My main conflict point with Arch is the maintenance factor. Whilst my priorities have been the bleeding edge for a long time, by now my thinking has been shifting more towards stability and being able to just use it. That’s what I loved about openSUSE Slowroll, but I don’t want to have a company behind it. And it had a KPM version mismatch resulting in broken nvidia driver.

I was avoiding the AUR as well, and I would definetly do so again. Even though I would probably stick with a plain Arch install instead of CachyOS

Final thoughts on my Linux daily driving choice
So, few days ago I asked the thread which distro they’d recommend and one of the most recommended was debian and debian based. But I for myself(Even though the post says otherwise) now chose to use an arch based distro, because of the better supported and newer nvidia drivers as well as automatic hardware detection. So I wanted to hear some experiences of you, that you may have had in the past considering EndeavourOS, CachyOS, Manjaro and Arch itself. I personally have gone for Manjaro now, kind of hoping that it won’t break on the attempt to cut themselves of the company side of Manjaro and becomming they’re own non-profit. yeah…

I don’t like Cinnamon but want to use KDE, but the user friendliness of LMDE would be really nice

I did enjoy debian a lot when I used it, I then left it for hyprland and thr rolling release though. But debian is definitely something I am up top of my list right now. Especially because I am now back to KDE Plasma and I’m not planning to change anything about that soon.

There have been bloated "easy to use" distros for a long time. But the based Linux distros like Arch & Debian have stayed pretty much untouched in my opinion. And, even tough I'm using plain Arch now, I also started into Linux using EndevourOS. It's just more convenient and not too big of a hurdle to get into the Linux universe.

Of course you can install them, but you need to do it. I didn’t say that it would be complicated or not possible, I just said that I really appreciated Manjaro for shipping the nvidia proprietary driver directly at the start without any trouble. And I did not say that I chose Arch-based for the nvidia driver, but for the more up-to-date drivers.
