@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social I feel your pain. It was maddening to watch the "good" public health officials under Biden tell everyone that Covid was fine now. That it didn't really affect children. That handwashing stopped Covid when they knew it spreads through the air. That it was a "pandemic of the unvaccinated" but not implementing best practices to raise vaccine uptake rates. That "immunity debt" was a thing when we and they knew it wasn't. Etc. Maddening to watch Public Health just basically declare victory and quit trying to stop the spread. Maddening.

One time, in 1941, it turns out, in retrospect, they weren't entirely lying, like they were every other time. Most had no idea what they were doing. Like the boys being forced to fight them. Did they bet on aspects of the invasion? They sure did.

Soldiers, who do one of the most boring jobs on earth (punctuated occasionally by abject terror) have always bet on everything, for 1000s of years. The near-children who ran ashore in Normandy for a good cause were not especially ethical people. They did a lot worse than gambling. Those "greatest generation" boys shot an awful lot of prisoners, for instance. Golden Age thinking is fascism.

Only subsidized social housing, the stuff built outside the market, (which stopped getting real funding around oh, 1978) does that. Upzoning only shores up prices by making land more valuable because more units are allowed. We've seen this over and over. Never, never, do any of these upzoning advocates point to a place where rent got more affordable after upzoning. Because that's not real. Build social housing now.
