@cwebber@social.coop I think it works by bouncing signals from your computer off of the atmosphere (hence the name "blue sky" it can only work well in clear weather). If it's cloudy it instead saves your messages in the clouds until the weather becomes clear, that's why we call it cloud storage.

@flesh @benjojo The $ is a unix crypt hash symbol, which indicates the string that follows is an encrypted password string. If the password were to be stored in say plain text, the program to check the password might infer some things about the password that are untrue if it starts with a $ and always error out since it's comparing what it thinks is a hash to a plaintext of the password, and they don't match. One might reasonably assume from this that this restriction is in place because they do indeed save the passwords as plain text...

@mullvadnet@mastodon.online @lostgen@det.social And yet can you guarantee that all money that I give you flows to preserve the freedom of everyone to be freely able to express, live and have privacy? You cannot, since it is proven a large sum went indirectly into making a party that cares about none of those things and actively wants to dismantle human rights. Caring about only some human rights is impossible, and pretending they are not inherently linked is intellectually dishonest. This isn't a mere "difference of opinion", I'd like to ask you how one could be pro free speech information and privacy when one would like to discriminate based on nationality, deny people entry and housing based on where they come from and discriminate based on place of origin/language/skin colour (these are all personal identification information!!). You can't! Because they are conflicting goals!

@tasket@infosec.exchange @mhoye@cosocial.ca if you genuinely believe that what you're positing is anarchism, and that anarchists are the least capable people to fight back against fascists I'd really suggest looking at the history of antifascism and anarchism. Kids have a right to a safer (online) space as everyone does, but paternalism and control never got that for any minority. It would be ideal if children were raised more anarchisticly, with equal say in their environments and free association. "Parental rights" got us into this mess, more control over children by anyone, parent or government, isn't going to liberate children and help them.

@mynameistillian@plush.city I don't know about you, I can only assume it being more but different. But I have such a strange relationship with English. It is the language of the empire, of a history that is awful and colonialist and oppressive. One forced on huge swaths of people against their will, I can see it actively displacing minority languages and people's willingness to meet halfway in communication. But it is also a language that unlocked the world for me, that gave me more connection to others than ever before, more perspective on everything out there. A key to the entire universe of knowledge, a gift I don't think native speakers quite grasp they have. English was probably my first ever special interest, and the most consistent one — and yet I struggle to say I love it, even if it changed my life immeasurably for the better.

@vagina_museum Gender neutral towards the person who helps the birth sure, not gender neutral towards the birthing person in that case though! May be worth looking at it critically through that lense, even if we could teach everyone that midwife is gender neutral towards the title holders, that might still be uncomfortable to non "wif" birthing people.

Drugs, abuse and social impact.
@wmd@chaos.social I find it very hard to deal with smokers, I am extremely sensitive to smoke and can't deal with it even outside or in well ventilated areas. And I don't even have asthma or any other serious lung condition. And I certainly get the victimizing element of being an addict and having this compulsion to do it. At the same time I feel like in counter-cultural spaces smoking is almost lionized or at least socially slightly encouraged. And that makes me a lot less able to engage with groups and people, I feel significantly less welcome in a lot of spaces because of smokers. I really wish I could navigate a way through that that considered both sides of that equation.

@mynameistillian@plush.city It's kind of easy to walk the line of:

  1. don't take these (mostly) Asian countries as representing the axis of all evil and things you 100% don't want to be to the point of always comparing yourself to them when things are bad at home and
  2. not pretending like they are utopias, not authoritarian, or even good on a large scale.

@jamesmarshall @leaverou Birds are tetrachromatic because their ancestors were larger carnivorous dinosaurs, they didn't lose their colour receptors because they were generally diurnal creatures. Mammals are mostly bichromatic (aside from a few exceptions like apes) because our ancestors were small burrowing creatures that couldn't go out during the day with all the big bird ancestors, so they only came out at night, as such our ancestors lost a large chunk of their unused colour vision.

@leewalton@mastodonapp.uk How to prevent child abuse? The experts are pretty clear about that. Children's rights, increased child autonomy, giving children more places to be and people they can rely and be safe with that isn't direct family (where most abuse happens). All of these measures to create authoritarian control from distrust doesn't make anyone safer, it just creates more leeway for the powerful (police) to abuse their power against the people.

@neilk @cwebber But GDP rises because of any investment, if you have a huge investment that leverages a huge part of your economy and then compare it to GDP it's going to mostly cancel out because you're putting two correlated variables at both ends of the equation. So I don't think that's a reasonable thing to do at all.

@RobotDiver@starlite.rodeo @tillshadeisgone@blackqueer.life I agree, that's exactly how white people work. Hanging out with my white family and getting told we are "not getting to political" and spoiling the mood. And then getting told a story about someone being in the gendarmerie and how someone else would like to arrest someone and I quote "Like a US police officer, by kneeling on them". But this isn't political, me saying something about George Floyd is. It's ridiculous.

@stellarskylark@solarpunk.moe It does have coconut so it might be an issue if you have that allergy too but as far as I understand that depends on the person's allergy profile. (And you could otherwise replace it with another sweet creamy liquid like condensed (vegan) milk). But it's 500g rice (sticky white like Thai rice or other long grain white rice), 750mL coconut milk, 2 kafir lime leaves, 2salam leaves (can use curry leaves as substitute), 1 lemongrass stem, pinch of turmeric, small bit (tea spoon or so) of lime juice. Wash the rice, cook the coconut milk with the non rice ingredients in a pan and boil until the oil separates and it gets glossy, steam or boil rice halfway (half of the amount of water in a rice cooker, half the time in a pan or steamer). Then put the rice in the coconut milk mixture and keep cooking until fully evaporated. Serve with whatever protein or veggie you want!

And all you're doing by being glib with "But no reject the new thing" is refusing to engage with valid criticism and pretending it doesn't exist instead, you're refusing to engage here not us.

@djsat2@mastodonapp.uk You really think the British police (this British police: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sus_law ) wouldn't abuse a power given to them that randomly flags wrong people as CSAM spreaders? Greater authoritarian control never made anyone safer. We know how to protect children, more safe third spaces with more people the kids can trust, greater community integration, more autonomy, more rights to make their own decisions. But those all run counter to the state controlling people's lives, so of course they are not considered.

As do the relations of queer people who committed suicide because of your inhumane immigration policies. Most queer people globally are non white, a huge proportion of queer people in Europe are non white. And yet most images talking about them are of white people. This is pinkwashing, focus on the biggest issues facing the queer community (including your inhumane immigration policy) and come back to me.

@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Because as we all know, from deep within our guts, all people that harm children are the weird perverts online. It's not as if abuse is usually done by people close to the children who have institutional power over them—and the research bears that out—that would obviously be absurd! We should give people close to children way more power to control everything they see! Because children deserve to see only trivial things that aren't challenging the worldview of those that own and control them! God forbid they see a queer person or something...

@chu@climatejustice.social They're also some of the most immoral ways of travel in many different ways. They often fly flags of nations with horrid labour conditions so they can apply those, fire people while on a cruise (so they can't leave and are functionally enslaved), use the worst fuel mixtures known to man and pollute like a mfer, tourism is just a form of modern colonisation but cruise ship routes specifically because of their regularity and volume really hollow out places efficiently and completely. And on top of that they're also incredible virus incubators, so all in all a great deal for people without souls!
