Our Release 2026.08.31 is already out on iOS, F-Droid and as APK on Codeberg, including for use with Obtainium etc.
Unfortunately, the Google Play version is still in review, two weeks after submission and two support tickets later.
New features include the display of reviews from @mangroveReviews@mas.to (which you can create e.g. using @MapComplete@en.osm.town), and a new transport modes UI on iOS.

By the total number of edits made, CoMaps was the 15th most used #OpenStreetMap editor in June.
At first glance, that might not sound like a lot, but: With that, we are the #1 OSM editor that is not mainly an editor but a fully fledged map & navigation app and also editor!
From the start we have said that we want CoMaps to be a good citizen of the larger OSM ecosystem and make sure that we and our users contribute back. And it looks like you're all making good on that!
Merci to the folks at @Framasoft@framapiaf.org for making Framastart, which lists ethical and accessible digital tools. And we made it on their list of suggested smartphone apps! 🗺️

@janvlug@mastodon.social There aren't concrete plans for that currently - having some active Mobile Linux developers is probably the main bottleneck. One of the talk presenters recently got a Linux phone, but I think it would need more people.
In other words, we're not intentionally not improving it but would need some more folks interested & able to work on that!
Did you know: CoMaps is the new default map/navigation app in #CalyxOS! Since the 7.2.1.0 test build of May, CoMaps helps CalyxOS users get around!

CoMaps is currently seeking an umbrella organization to join in order to better position itself as a project.

As promised, we've upped our map release frequency now that you can update maps independently of the app:

Release 2026.04.23 is now out on all channels!
Beyond fresh maps from #OpenStreetMap data, the Android version now allows changing the app interface language and toggling between the next stop and final destination of your turn-by-turn navigation!

A huge thanks to the ~25 folks that joined us for our virtual birthday party yesterday and made it a really great event! 🥳 Covering a range of 14 time zones, it really showed how global our community is. 🌏 Over the course of around 2.5 hours, we were joined by some long-standing CoMaps contributors, active members of the #OpenStreetMap community, and many new faces!
Making an app like CoMaps does not just mean developing new features. It also requires ongoing work to make sure we don't accumulate technical debt and stay future proof. On our blog, contributor Jean-Baptiste outlines what work we've already done!

But, we know that many of our users also use CoMaps for actively contributing to OpenStreetMap - and for them having fresher local maps helps making better contributions!

That's by design, as we promised we wouldn't do any internet connections without user consent - at some point in the future there'll likely be a opt-in for automatically checking for new maps in the background but for now it's all manual. :-)

But we promise we don't access the internet without user consent, so the first release was fully manual and when the feature for automatically checking comes it'll be optional too! 😊

@robtherunt@cupoftea.social yes and no: Until now you would first download a new app version, and then inside the app update the maps. But so far, you never would get newer maps without first updating the app (maybe you didn't notice because of having auto-app-updates enabled?)
From now on, you don't have to update the app version first, in regular intervals there'll be new maps available in-app!

Personally, I think it would potentially also shift a lot of computational burden onto end-user devices for the merging, which could be problematic for older devices. So it's a bit of a trade-off to consider!

If you mean just getting a "diff" of the changes, that's quite a bit more complex to implement and nothing to expect soon I think!
