@jpoesen as it turns out. On Mastodon. After using mastodon more actively for the past couple of days I tripped over what I've been unable to find for years on the other social media platforms. A local volunteer group effort to help people get away from big tech.

The fact that they are located in the US under current administration and the lack of autonomy does. I'm happy I finally took the plunge and made them my back up social media and Mastodon my primary. I like some of the utility over there, but it's already doing the spiral I watched Twitter doing before leaving there.

I don't know how to explain to the people who pop up when creatives complain about "AI" to say there are legit uses for it just how much they sound like someone saying "Well actually fire is used to make bread" when people are talking about an organized arson ring burning down their fucking houses

@glyph@mastodon.social So many of us feel like this. I want to spend my time on the things I enjoy. What makes me happy, instead of constantly having something that frustrates me to no end by it's obnoxious backwards application and lack of accountability shoved in my face and into every facet of the process. I have so many passions and things I want to do and talk about, but instead my mind is constantly interrupted by this unwelcome all encompassing hype-version of a technology poisoning those wells of joy.

Focus on energy sovereignty aka green energy and please dial down the AI hype and implementations that hasn't been vigorously tested and passed trusted human review. @tpfto@mathstodon.xyz @baldur@toot.cafe I wish I was, but honestly I'm not. Nothing surprises me after watching parts of the press often just acting as microphone holders so CEOs who have repeatedly been wrong and said incredibly stupid things can broadcast another opinion or weird idea without further context or holding them accountable. Also knowing that said press news outlets are invested in by the tech companies, their investors or their CEOs themselves.

@onepunchmango@radikal.social I'm aware of what the EFF do. I'm not saying they don't do a lot of good. However, they are not against LLMs and up until recently they were positive about its usage. Even though the technology inherently relies on voiding people's privacy. For the longest time they cheered on it as a way to beat Copyright and boost free information, ignoring people who tried to explain why it would be damaging. Try taking a look at how this page has changed this month: https://web.archive.org/web/20260000000000*/https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/02/effs-policy-llm-assisted-contributions-our-open-source-projects

@liw@toot.liw.fi @corbet@social.kernel.org @baldur@toot.cafe Lars if you need more blogs and tech news that are worth checking out I can recommend following the tech journalists directly rather than the outlets and the same for researchers as well such as @molly0xfff@hachyderm.io etc. Many tech journalists have to work freelance as jobs are drying up, so their contributions will often be one off stories they sell to whomever will take the story.

Tim Corey, educator and .NET developer did this video yesterday to check out if the obscene prices people have been posting on r/GithubCopilot are true. He made an estimate that a mid-tier model (Sonnet 4.6) would cost with a conservative daily usage around 75$ a day = 18000$ a year and this is still with subsidizing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNF9tGKBfhA

I've been keeping a physical Bullet Journal for a while, but not quite the same. Going back to physical media myself, although digitising them for when I'm on the go. My phone has replaced my habit of reading books when on the go and I really want to curb that habit this year and go back to reading more books.

@skysong@floss.social Increasingly more people are looking for help with it, they just don't know where to go and start. With what Microsoft is promising for Windows 12 (modular with even more AI and cloud services), I'm almost certain that demand will continue to rise.

Try checking out https://endof10.org/ for local activities near you.

Points of convincing:

  • Their laptop not being able to upgrade to Win 11-12
  • Everything is turning into subscription services
  • Microsoft forcing cloud/online
  • Etc.

Did you know that the later higher resolution and widescreen remaster f***d up the theme and cut of the show?

Also, yes Joss Whedon 👎

@MartyFouts@mastodon.online @thirstybear@agilodon.social they want to ban their houses being used for fueling the fire. The people roasting marshmallows and baking bread on their burning houses are not entitled to their houses as fuel and the arsonists have convinced them it’s necessary and okay. So no, that’s not a problem. You just forgot that part of the metaphor.

The marshmallow toasters are the ones coming up to the homeowners and going "look how crispy the fire is making my marshmallow, isn't it nice? I hope the arsonists continue to burn houses so I can keep a roast going." The bread bakers are talking about another kind of fire = AI.

Tried to learn the piano a while ago and I'd end sessions frustrated because I couldn't get my fingerwork right. Cue next day where I can play the same piece without a hitch. The brain needs some downtime to rearrange stuff so you can go to a task with what it's processed during downtime.
