👻 Spooky season continues at the Internet Archive! Today’s tricky treat: HÄXAN, the 1922 silent film about witchcraft, superstition and the persecution of those accused of practicing it. In this sequence, witches take flight through the night, followed by a gathering of dark rituals. This Swedish-financed Danish production was filmed in Denmark. ‘Bear's Breeches’ by Karl Blossfeldt (1928)

Photograph from Karl Blossfeldt's internationally best-selling Urformen der Kunst (later translated into English as Art Forms in Plants). The book's 120 plates display Blossfeldt's remarkable photographs of plants – varieties from Equisetum hyemale (Winter Horsetail) to Tellima grandiflora (Fringe cups) — all captured in extraordinary detail, as if under the microscope, frozen into new forms almost beyond recognition.

From January: What do Sam "The Falcon" Wilson, Scooby-Doo, the Earth-2 Superman, and Sauron (the "I want to turn people into dinosaurs" guy) have in common? They all should've entered public domain this year under their original copyright terms, but didn't. https://www.diversetechgeek.com/cartoons-public-domain-2026/ #comics #animation #copyright #publicdomain

2️⃣/2️⃣ The Jules Rimet Cup crowned football's greatest champions from 1930 to 1970. After Brazil was awarded the trophy permanently, it was stolen from the Brazilian Football Confederation's headquarters in 1983 and has never been recovered, making it one of sport's greatest unsolved mysteries. #WorldCup #FootballHistory #SoccerHistory #ArtDeco #PublicDomain #OpenAccess

Happy 55th Birthday, Project Gutenberg! Let's celebrate!🎉 Project Gutenberg was founded on July 4, 1971, when Michael Hart typed the U.S. Declaration of Independence into an early internet-connected computer and shared it with friends, making it the first digital text — though its official posting date is recorded as December 1, 1971. (And happy 250th, USA.) The Declaration of Independence at PG: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1 #ebooks #publicdomain
