Hot on the heels of the recent 100% failures to install #Haiku in either QEMU VM or lappy SSD [https://infosec.space/@MsDropbear42/117335082820301999 https://infosec.space/@MsDropbear42/117333664504154227] today i am simply "delighted" to report a new round of 100% failures... this time with #GhostBSD.
After hours of research last night, including watching a few extremely positive videos of the installation & desktop usage UX, i enthusiastically looked forward keenly to trying it out myself, initially at least in a VM. Downloading the ISO took so many hours that i had to go to bed & hope it would complete ok; returning to pooter this morn showed it did. It then passed the sha256sum check fine.
I prepared a #QEMU VM for it, with 4GB RAM & 2 cores, & set it for UEFI bootit booted to the initial menu, where i let it time-out into booting the default multi-user optionit showed several lines of text, then went to a pretty GhostBSD splash screenit showed the splash screenit showed the splash screenit showed the splash screenit showed the splash screenit showed the splash screenit showed the splash screenit showed the splash screenit showed the splash screeni aborted itmy research had indicated GhostBSD was supposed to be able to boot with either UEFI or BIOS, but as a check, i created a second VM for the ISO, this time with BIOS-boot, & foolishly i blindly accepted all the other default QEMU settingsthis booted with a conspicuously ugly low-resolution screen compared to before, but after the multi-user option initiated, didn't bother with any splash screen, instead a scrolling text wall showing it was loading the ISO into memory... which then summarily failed with an out of memory error & an indignant message it needed min 4GB. that's on me, the default QEMU was only 1GB, d'ohi edited the VM config to give it 6GB, & retriedit got much further this time, but ended in another failure, this time iirc a seg-fault... FFS! i returned to the first VM, increased its RAM also to 6GB, & tried againsplash screensplash screensplash screensplash screenirritated, i began drafting this whinge-posteventually i discovered the VM had emerged from the splash screen, into a wall of text as per pic, ending in another failure... a seg-faulti am really annoyed at this bullshit. Haiku at least has an excuse, being only beta, but wtaf here, Ghost?
Is my only bloody option now to escape the invasion of the slopbots in #linux, for me to dig out my abacus or slide-rule? Pretty pissed off atm.

@thesupertechie@lgbtqia.space prolly depends on what you actually mean here. afaict all linux distros are now tainted by definition, given linus has allowed slopbottery in the kernels... so even if there is some unicorn distro that has vowed no slopbottery [eg, gentoo, elementary], they already begin behind the eightball via the kernels.
however, then consider the impact on downstream distros by the choices made of their upstreams. take elementaryOS... aren't they downstream of debian via ubuntu? if so / as such, how do they avoid being enslopified, despite their own fine ethical policy?
afaict, those of us vehemently against the scourge of gen-ai are fast losing this struggle, alas

supplanted archlinux kde plasma with kdelinux as my daily penguin
last night
supplanted https://dev.phanpy.social/#/ with https://phanpy.social/#/ as my daily fedi supplanted firefox nightly with firefox as my daily browser
seems that as i plunge ever deeper into my decrepitude i lose more & more of the erstwhile delights of bleeding edge 🤔🤷♀️🥺

in my own case, fwiw, of the three i listed, the one at greatest risk of me backsliding, is The Fox... i have tried several times over the years to give up
, & ofc all those attempts failed, coz... i love its icon, & i love getting the bugfixes & new features faster!
...aaaaaaaaand so it has come to pass... i have jumped back to
this morning! 🙄🤦♀️
it's just been bugging me continually over these days since my OP, how it could be that my primary Nightly profile could have suddenly changed, with one routine update several days before my OP, from being great to being shit [as judged by its performance on my primary fediverse tab; #Phanpy]. i then kept waiting for subsequent bi-daily updates to fix this "obvious" bug the Devs "had introduced" with that specific version, but update after update my Phanpy tab remained unusable [scrolling had become agonising, feeling like it was trying to move thu cold treacle, with attendant high cpu%]. neither regular
nor
suffered this problem [but then again, neither had Nightly, until That One Update].
so coz i'm stubborn & silly, i just could not leave this puzzle unsolved. this morn after many hours investigating, i finally solved it, afaict... for years, Nightly on my pooter has run better when i disable its default settings of Use recommended performance settings, and associated Use hardware acceleration when available [i have no dedicated gpu, only the integrated Intel graphics]. i've run that way so long i'd forgotten about it. this morn i discovered that the Phanpy treacle problem simply vanishes entirely, if i return those settings to default. so, it seems the Devs made some internal change with That One Update, with which my specific departure from default, formerly as asset, became a liability. d'oh! 😲 🤯

@gnuplusmatt@fosstodon.org i dual boot archlinux & kdelinux, with me spending most of my time in the latter for recent months. i've also run kinoite on my ssd before kdelinux, where it was straightforward to install s/w. kalpa also lets us. however the one unsolved challenge i have in kdelinux [my apps are via a combo of flatpak & distrobox] is i've found no way yet i can install my vpn app & have it work... unlike kalpa & kinoite, kdelinux has no package manager. having it in a distrobox did not work, albeit maybe i need to create a root not merely user db? there is no flatpak version, nor appimage, & the other precompiled binaries [rpms & debs, & Arch's one] are no use given no pkg manager.

Everyone says Linux is technically complicated, intended for tech-savvy users who like to dwell in the terminal. However, as someone who has used Linux as my daily driver for 10 years and nudged plenty of friends and family toward it, I can tell you that reputation is a myth—at least on modern Linux desktops. To prove my point, I put my mother-in-law—a completely non-technical user—on Linux. And spoiler alert: it went better than her time on Windows ever did.

whilst i came up with an entirely different outcome [i would never ever choose the windoze of penguins, ugh, & i am not a gamer, so care nada about any of that associated crap], some of his thinking matches mine
https://www.howtogeek.com/after-5-years-of-using-arch-linux-i-quit/
though i still have
installed on my main pooter's sda, & whilst it is still very reliable for me, the friction from the routine maintenance [he listed some of the items / actions, but there's others too] has been a bit of a drag for me for some years now, plus the ongoing #AUR attacks necessitate a perpetually heightened defensive posture that's tiring, & to which i chose eventually to respond to by replacing most of my AUR pkgs with #flatpak or #distrobox ones, or in several cases nothing at all [ie, i chose to just abandon some apps altogether].
so for a couple of months now [after more than a year in various VMs], my delightful daily penguin is the immutable atomic alpha
, on sdc. it is really pleasant to use, albeit ofc i needed to adjust several of my workflows to accommodate its RO base.
my sdb remains largely empty atm, but once it reaches Beta i hope to install
kalpa here
unfortunately my old 2011 Dell xps-15 lappy is "stuck" with Arch, coz it only has bios not uefi boot, which eliminates both of those atomics, alas

tis evil shit like this that only reinforces my determination never to run an unhardened profile as my main browser, eg for years i have Service Workers disabled via my user.js, & javascript disabled globally in my uBlockOrigin advanced settings, allowed only on a per-site manual basis
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/malicious-sites-use-javascript-to-build-malware-in-browser-memory/
sigh, so many bastards about 🥺
PS-1: all you chrome / chromium users, now without uBO; what on earth are you thinking? 🤷🙄🤦♀️
PS-2: i know this article pertains to attacks on silly crypto-shitheads, but i'm looking at the larger picture; the same attack vector could be applied more broadly, not just for those karmic victims, ha!

for mega-yonks i have avidly followed heapsa #linux hashtags [as a linux user & enjoyer] plus various #bsd tags [as someone somewhat bsd-curious but quite overwhelmed by it conceptually & practically]. am now thinking of unfollowing said bsd tags, coz seeing all the posts from all the clever peeps using it with all their incomprehensible commands & concepts, rather than inspiring me is kinda sorta more demoralising & overwhelming me
also, there's just no point me ignoring the fact that i bloody well love using my various linux systems, & hafta be honest with myself that the chances of me ever seriously embarking on learning then using another paradigm now are pretty damn slender
so, unfollowing said bsd tags seems logical & pragmatic
and yet...
...it also feels cowardly & lazy
ergo ever more i continue walking around in an endless circle on a cold distant planet, locked in a logic loop, the very robot of which asimov wrote

@linuxiac@mastodon.social @mozilla@mastodon.social you & many other tech sites are pushing this line, also Mozilla themselves, about the "new" native #Containers. it's totes blowing my mind. i have been using this already for the last year at least, sans AO, in my

user_pref("privacy.userContext.enabled", true);
user_pref("privacy.userContext.newTabContainerOnLeftClick.enabled", true);
user_pref("privacy.userContext.ui.enabled", true);
These reports seem rather misleading afaict.

@Tooden@aus.social well, bummeris not she who died, but alas the usb port into which i had plugged her, that has died#lappy is a 2011 dell xps15, originally running win7. was my sole pooter when in dec 2013 i discovered linux, & began exploring it via several virtualbox VMs. fully converted her to linux a coupla years later. sadly a coupla years after that, i cleverly spilled my mugga hot green tea over her keyboard, & she's never been the same since... multiple keys malfunction, hdmi port died, now i find it's not just one of her usb ports that's died, it's actually two, so only one good one left... meaning to use my usb headset i have to unplug #mousie, & vice versa.
seems afaict lappy is slowly, surely, doing a black knight at me...
she's been only my secondary pooter since 2015, when i treated myself to a big fat tower for all my penguins. even so, it'd be quite nice if her bits would stop with this dying malarkey

question to strayan users of browsers with #DRM removed or disabled...
how do you manage #streaming? do you, eg, never watch abc #iView or sbs #OnDemand?
i use hardened profiles in my

so, pls tell me how you manage streaminig, coz atm i just don't understand, ta

every now & then i curiously toggle privacy.resistFingerprinting on in about:config, then despairingly off again about 42 seconds later. though unhappy about it i could prolly make myself get used to it buggering my desired window size, & possibly even it buggering my indicated timezone [i do understand the privacy logic of both]. however i simply cannot abide it forcing all sites into light mode -- it is very uncomfy during days, but unbearably painful at nights. why oh why, mozilla, can't you consider this basic accessibility issue?

i first discovered linux in dec 2013, & sometime possibly in 2014, otherwise 2015, i learned there was some niche distro called h/m. i never bothered actually trying it, coz wtaf, but that was the first time i learned, vaguely, there was some pop culture character called h/m. i knew nothing about it, & still do not. i suspect that for h/m fans though, learning of h/m herself only sometime after learning of this thing called linux, then later again of the actual distro, is prolly not the usual sequence 🤪
