“I’ve spent over 50 years fighting fires, and I’ve watched this threat change beyond recognition,” said former Commissioner of Fire & Rescue NSW Greg Mullins. “The fire seasons start earlier, burn hotter and run longer, because climate pollution from coal, oil and gas is heating the planet.” Australia’s 2019-20 Black Summer disaster was one of the most catastrophic fire seasons in its history, killing 33 people directly, with an additional 417 deaths attributed to smoke inhalation. Mr Mullins said that “in the six years since, we’ve added more pollution to the problem”. “Governments that keep approving new coal, oil and gas projects are raising the risk of even worse fire disasters,” he said. https://thepoint.com.au/new/260708-no-one-is-left-to-come-to-anyones-aid-former-emergency-chiefs-warn-of-a-new-era-of-bushfire-risk #wildfires #Australia #climateRisks #climateChange #firefighting #firefighters #fires #climatePolicy #AusPol

… “Forest fires burn twice as much forest today as they did 20 years ago.” “There are ways to sustainably manage a forest, like through thinning and prescribed burns, fire breaks, those sorts of things that don’t involve clear-cutting an entire forest, but leave the tree standing, leave the healthy ecosystem there, but are still kind of managing the fuel load,” she says. Beavers tackling Europe’s raging wildfires & helping burnt landscapes recover #Beavers build dams, dig channels and transform small streams into broad wetland areas. This helps keep plants lush and green, even throughout long periods of drought. It means when a #wildfire ignites, the green vegetation near the beaver ponds will be much harder to burn compared to dried-out areas. Experts say that #fires will often take the path of least resistance https://www.euronews.com/2026/07/29/how-beavers-are-quietly-tackling-europes-raging-wildfires-and-helping-burnt-landscapes-rec #nature #wildfires

The intense heatwave at the end of June alone, is estimated to have killed 20,000 people. Climate crisis-driven heat is “sucking soils dry” as extreme drought spreads across Europe and other parts of the world. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jul/31/wildfires-extreme-weather-europe-spain-france-climate-crisis-analysis#MakePollutersPay #climatecrisis #heatwave #drought #fires

Europe’s extreme heat has killed around 20,000 people in just one week, including over 5,700 deaths in France alone, while a five‑day heatwave in India was linked to nearly 30,000 excess deaths. Adapting our homes, cities and health systems and protecting people from the fossil‑fuelled climate crisis must now be treated as an ABSOLUTE political priority. #heat #fires #health #climatechange #climatecrisis #heatwaves #makepolluterspay

Hmmm... out of control wildfires across the world (in France, Spain, the UK, Canada... and that's just this week), might indicate that the warming world has reached the point where plant substance(s) from ground cover to trees are in a state of frequent potential combustion. If the world *does* catch fire , what next; certainly imposing tariffs on those effected doesn't look that effective... I know, how about re-thinking objections to environment-focussed policy making? #ClimateChange #Fires

"While a mortal threat to the most vulnerable, the smoky air, which triggered air-quality alerts across the country, was mostly a nuisance in the United States. But up north, the #fires represented an existential catastrophe for some small communities of First Nations people. "One of the glaring ironies of #GlobalWarming is that its worst effects often land the hardest on the people least responsible for contributing to the problem." https://www.americamagazine.org/politics-society/weekly-dispatch/2026/07/24/canada-first-nations-ontario-wildfires/?mc_cid=38d6e959d6&mc_eid=42caf3e016 #Canada #Wildfires
