I just released an update to my #iOS Intersector app that vastly improves the map data speeds and reliability. This is an app that simply identifies intersections when out and about, a common bit of orientation info we #Blind folks need when traveling. Intersector tells you about your nearest or upcoming intersections, tells you your compass direction, has a Scan mode where you can move your phone around to discover what intersections are immediately around you, and has a Live mode where it will speak your intersections as you walk or drive around. Great for figuring out where you are in a bus or a rideshare, or reorienting when coming out of a subway, etc. It has Siri shortcuts and an Apple Watch companion app. Check it out! https://apps.apple.com/us/app/intersector/id6777891238

It's finally here: Paperback 1.0! My fast, fully accessible ebook and document reader is now out on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android, with iOS following the second Apple decides to actually look at it. The changelog is once again way too big for any post, so here are the highlights:
New platform: Linux! As an AppImage or a tarball, with desktop integration so documents open straight from your file manager.
New formats:
Comic book archives (.cbz).M4B and MP3 audiobooks, split into their chapters.Man pages, both man and BSD mdoc, gzipped or not.reStructuredText.Windows Write (.wri) files. Thanks, Mastodon.WinHelp (.hlp) files. Yes, really.Word 6 and Word 95 documents.
Big new stuff:
OCR for scanned PDFs, using the engine built into Windows and macOS. Press Enter on a scanned page, or batch OCR a whole range of pages with Ctrl+Shift+O.MathML in EPUB and HTML is now rendered as AsciiMath via MathCAT. Jump between formulas with M and Shift+M, and open the original MathML in a formula view with enter or space.Find All, listing every matching line so you can jump right to the one you want.Tables, Lists, and Pages views in the elements dialog.Mark a spot with Alt+F9 and copy everything from there to where you are with Alt+F10, no more shift-arrowing through 40 pages.Audio book playback speed, from half speed to 3x.Any document can now be opened in the web view.Headings are drawn at a size matching their level.Relative Go To: +n and -n in Go to Line, Page, and Percent.Heading navigation from the table of contents for EPUB, MOBI, and CHM books with no headings of their own.A Ukrainian translation.
Plus a mountain of fixes, especially to PDF (I still hate PDF), MOBI/AZW3 books, which are now much faster and no longer cut off at 20 MB, FictionBook, and large books in general.
And of course, the mobile apps. They open every format the desktop does, with seamless read aloud using your choice of voice, background audio book playback, navigation by headings, pages, links, tables and more, a sleep timer, export, and keyboard shortcuts that match the desktop. They're $19.99, once, per platform, and buying them is what pays for the work on Paperback. The desktop versions stay free.

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dev.paperback.android

Huge thanks to everyone who tested, filed bugs, translated, and put up with me during this development cycle. Enjoy! #Paperback #accessibility #blind

New post: Google still can't make an accessibility menu accessible.
Put more than one service on Android's accessibility shortcut and holding the volume keys brings up a menu with no speech, at the exact moment no screen reader is running. Apple and Microsoft solved this years ago. I fixed it in ten minutes at one in the morning. Google has had years.

There’s a good reason why I choose to never attend blindness conventions, or assimilate myself with a lot of the blindness groups here in the US. I prefer hanging around a smaller contingency of blind people rather than the larger groups. Aside from the fact that the blind community is often extremely racist towards disabled people of color, trans phobic and homophobic to the disabled LGBT plus members, ableist to other disability groups, the community as a whole participates in techno ableism. The community chides others for choosing to not willingly participate in capitalism any longer. The community values independence rather than interdependence. I do not see eye to eye on many of the single disability issues the community at large advocates for, especially as it relates to employment and accessibility access at the risk of my and others privacy. The community is too focused on getting others to assimilate and comply with a hostile capitalistic system rather than encouraging others to live their best blind and or disabled lives even if they do not work.
This is also why I prefer to hang around other disabled people and other disability groups outside of my blindness. They do not follow these same rigid desires.
I haven’t even touched on the internal discrimination I have seen from blind people to other blind people. I have repeatedly witnessed workplace discrimination that was a lot worse than none disabled bosses.
And that isn’t even the half of everything else.

This post contains several requests, so I will try to organise them in a meaningful manner. I am seeking the following materials. The more stars, the more I want it. I am fully capable of reading things at Project Gutenberg and the Internet Archive, particularly in html and txt formats, but some of this is a bit specialised, and as regards braille music, those options won't work. Note that there is an Introd To Braille Music available, but it costs several hundred dollars!
- Old course catalogues and books from Hadley School for the Blind. In particular, courses on *** Latin, *** Italian (only if it's traditional with grammar, dialogues, exercises, etc. not just conversational or phrases), *** container gardening, *** braille music, *** crafts, *** home economics, *** cooking, *** general recreational activities, and other things that may interest me (for those who know me or have read my profile).
- The following books in hard copy braille. I would prefer to avoid UEB and to use either American Grade 2 or Standard English Braille. *** First Theory by Angela Diller, by the American Printing House for the Blind (also other books in the series, or other good music theory books in braille, including anything by Ebenezer Prout, whom I am currently using in txt format) ** Hadley: Braille Music Reading *** Who’s Afraid of Braille Music? by Richard Taesch and William R. McCann (found, must make sure it's in Grade II) *** Maeve Smith, A Course in Braille Music ** Edward Watson, A Guide to Braille Music Notation
- Bettye Krollick, New International Manual of Braille Music ** BANA, Music Braille Code (prior to 2015) *** books on learning the classical guitar using traditional methods i.e. holding, finger positions, notes, scales, exercises, chords, and songs, not just chords and songs *** braille books on singing, using old methods breath support, notes, scales, arpeggios, vocalisations, exercises, ornamentation, etc. then arias (I don't even know if they exist in print, but I had to add them)

Today's #accessibility fail: the #Ticketmaster #iOS app when you need to reset your password. You get stuck in a screen asking where you want a code sent, to your phone or to email, with no way to continue after you make your selection. The same problem occurs if you try to set up a Passkey on the device. Select where you want it saved, and you cannot proceed any further.

Ja. Verdammt noch mal. Den Satz hör ich seit 30 Jahren.
Auf jedem Podium. In jeder Sonntagsrede.

Laut. Dann liest sie. Laut. Im vollen Wartezimmer.
„Haben Sie Geschlechtskrankheiten? Nehmen Sie Psychopharmaka? Hatten Sie schon mal Depressionen?"
Zehn Fremde hören mit. Mein halbes Leben, vorgelesen neben dem Zeitschriftenständer.
Ein Nebenraum. Ein Formular online. Leiser sprechen. Alles hätte gereicht.

Please forgive the length of this post, but it does take some explaining. I am totally blind and am interested in learning to play classical guitar. The music that interests me for this endeavour is opera, Neapolitan, Italian art song, serenades, parlour songs, Spanish guitar, etc. not folk, popular, rock, country, blues, and so on. I found the following two resources for the blind.
https://afb.org/aw/21/2/16906
https://letsplayguitar.org/
The problem is how they teach. I am not the sort who wants to learn a few chords and begin playing songs after my first or second lesson. I am a firm believer in learning music theory, scales, and exercises, and only after a very long while, playing actual songs. This is similar to proper singing instruction, which can take up to six years. To me, these other methods are the equivalent of Vaccai, or for those unfamiliar with him, learning a few tourist phrases of a language to get by, instead of learning via grammar, dialogues, translation, memorisation, etc. Whether or not I ever perform in public, I don't want to learn half way. I do have Harmony : its theory and practice by Ebenezer Prout for the theory, and I am using Perplexity to clean it of errors and supply the missing notation when possible.

Having said that, I am now researching some nineteenth-century guitar teachers. I've come across names such as Carulli, Aguado, Carcassi, Legnani, Molino, and Sor, all offering something different and for different levels of study. It seems that, for a beginner, Carulli and Carcassi, and possibly Aguado might be good choices. Despite its date of publication, I couldn't find an accessible version of Carulli's Op. 241, though I did find a good lecture about it on Youtube. However, while he plays the notes, I have no idea what fingers he is using for what.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oowE9bD_k44
I also found an English version of the English edition in hard copy on Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/Ferdinando-Carullis-Guitar-School-Tablature/dp/3950550283
My main problem as a blind student is notation. If he writes strictly on the staff, I won't be able to follow him, unless I could possible run the text, which I will first have to scan with ocr, through Perplexity and see if it can make sense of it. If he uses his own notation 1 through 4 for the left hand, and p for the thumb plus a through d for the right), I can read some of it. But that still leaves me with the issue of where to place my fingers on the strings i.e. first fret, second string, index finger. They offer modern tabliture, but I beleive the same problems will still exist. I don't know, as I know nothing about that system. At the first link for the blind, they mentioned an accessible chords site, but while their main page still works, their accessible one doesn't, and the main one just gives diagrams for the scales and chords with no text to read.
Does anyone know where I can find an accessible course for the guitar that is more traditional, or at least a place where I can learn the scales and some exercises?

Sätze, die ich mir anhören durfte. Weil ich behindert bin.
„Pass doch auf, du blinder Krüppel!"
„Spast."
"Du bist doch ein Fickfehler!"
„Du kassierst doch nur Stütze, du Schmarotzer."
„Welche Frau will schon so einen?"
„Früher hätte man so was wie dich weggesperrt."
„Bei Hitler hätt's dich nicht gegeben."
Nicht von Trollen im Netz. Ins Gesicht.

Hey all.
@bermudianbrit@mastodon.online and I have been considering a trip outside of England but inside the UK for some time now, but we're not sure where to go and whats worth seeing.
I'm also somewhat partial to a bed and breakfast or similar as somewhere to stay, because I love a little personal touch. :) But equally the world is replete with many such places and I know very few people with personal experience.
If you have been outside of England and thought there were things worth seeing and experiencing, pile them on me.
We are music people, and we really enjoy history and food, and sometimes we can be convinced to drink the same alcohol. I really like nature, but what I'm used to I don't think is going to be as easily findable in these here parts.
Any thoughts or suggestions, preferably personally experienced, or experienced by those you are close to, would be much appreciated.

Schuld an dem was kommt!
