Instance admin. Not a professional sysadmin like some here; fuck me, I'm not even a *good* sysadmin. But if I'm going to have a tinpot dictator with nonsensical rules in charge, I figure it outta be one I can at least agree with.

I post rarely, but I'm trying to up the frequency. Typical topics are transit, tech, and whichever show or book I'm partway through.

Posts are likely to be profanity-laden - not out of hate, I'm just pretty darn evangelical about some of my favourite projects.

@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems I'd actually like to ask about an earlier question, "What was the role of the Royal Navy after slavery was banned?" Except my question to the UK is more along the lines of "What was the role of the Royal Navy *before* slavery was banned then?"

@emily@fedi.uni.horse hell, making it to the point of "We have the uptake and userbase that we have to seriously design and implement robust moderation tooling" is an endorsement in and of itself It may need to cook a bit for anyone's individual community to find it works well enough to warrant jumping [0], but I'd argue it's the best we're likely to see for some time [0] Perfect it is not, I'll cop to that.

@emily@fedi.uni.horse honestly, the best thing one might be able to say about Matrix is that they're down to "We have a million small issues, as have mostly sorted out the biggest ones" Funding without VC cash, self-hostable, usable without starting with a payment, message history? Mostly there Most papercuts are known papercuts, like moderation, little oddities with video / voice rooms, on-boarding, etc. In my mind, that's one of the signs of a mature, stable, trustworthy project

@b3ll@mastodon.social @caseyliss@mastodon.social Actually yeah - NAS auto-move / rename events vs Plex scanning would be my first guess, and something that's bitten me before too

@wizard@xyzzy.link Honest to god, this is one of the best reasons for ditching GApps I found a phone I *like*, it is re*pair*able, and it works the way I damn well *want* it to - right up until the Google Play Services system requirements get so damn high the device slows to a crawl Dropping Google means finding something I like, and getting to keep it for several years

@nycki@bark.lgbt Hell, as a big fan of Matrix, even I will point out it's far from perfect But the alternative is currently boiling the frog for requiring ID, *immediately* after having their chain of custody breached for that very information, which makes the choice fairly straightforward

Wait, battery settings / history works now, because apparently Google has their hooks in the *battery history* Why the fuck is there any non-AOSP code in battery history

@grishka@mastodon.social And honestly, this might just be the exact balance I consider reasonable for things like this CLI tools that are *powerful*. Tucked away by default, but easy to use and enable if you want The option to remove guardrails that, in absolute numbers, lots of people maybe *should* have, but with no other penalty or nags if you tell your device to do things your way Guardrails are fine, IMO. The ability to turn them off, however, is a requirement that's not always respected

The Bo Burnham joke of "How old is too old to believe in Santa Clause? I have a cousin- *seventeen* - still believes in..." but it's Americans still believing in completely unregulated free markets

@trib@aus.social Question 4 being "Do you understand what gender stereotyping is?" feels like it should have a "Sure, but *do* I?" instead of being Y/N And I get the impression this will not be the only question in the survey I have this response to

@mhoye@cosocial.ca Call the local-ish avionics shops, ask if they do retro-fit instrument panels, and follow up with asking who they get to cut their panels? Former employer had this done a couple time per year, and size, thickness, material, and accuracy all sound in-line with what you need

@grishka@mastodon.social @chewbacca Which is exactly what I wanted the last few days too Maybe this is nice for the average consumer, but if I have an app installed, with permissions granted, it's because I want it there. If I didn't, I'd have adb disable'd or uninstalled it on setup

@grishka@mastodon.social Re: threat model, most normal people will impatiently click through whatever makes the prompt shut up and let them do what they want with the app [0] This isn't *great* on the most intimate devices we own So on balance, this feels fine - a reasonable default for normal people, an option for people to opt-out, and a "Fuckin' stop that" command hidden behind a CLI tool non-geeks won't touch [0] So I hear, though I'll have to find some non-computer geeks to ask

LineageOS comes through as being the only reasonable way to use modern Android. Again Praise be to user Deathmist in the Zinwa Discord for putting together the GSI though <3

Replying to on social.treehouse.systems
@cas@social.treehouse.systems I'd have thought that "New Conversation > New Video Room" would have made the list for a voice room It just idles there, with people able to drop in and out as they please, and no explicit "Start Call" (It falls down in other ways, like the inability to see which users are currently in the room, but that's a smaller lift than "Missing entirely")
