Joten bloggasin: https://research.tuni.fi/tammisto/blog/orpo-korruptio-ja-orbanisaatio/ #GardenHelsinki

@criminalerin@jorts.horse True story: a freelance translator had notified the client that they charge by the character (standard procedure) and the client agreed. Upon getting the bill, the client asked that, hey, do we need to pay for the white spaces too??? The translator who was a total badass lady, removed all the whitespaces and faxed the document to the client, and told them that okey dokey, here is your text, I took the whitwspaces out! (Yeah, this was waybackwhen) She then faxed the client two blank spaces and told that hey, the blank spaces I took out are on these, you can put them back in the appropriate places. The client the coufhed up the money for the whole text...

@anthropology@sciences.social This resonates well with work by folks like Thomas Widlok, who analyses sharing (among !Kung groups) and notes that rather than a "simple" egalitarian baseline for other transactions, it is a nuanced form of transaction and a social achievement in its own right. Similarly Graeber noted of consensus based politics that whem it seems easy and "simple" as practised by, say, folks in rural Madgascar, it is not because it is a "simple" form of politics, but because people in those settings have practiced it more, are more experienced and skilled in it than, say, US anti-authoritarian activist kids in the 1990s. Again, it is a social achievement that should be recognized as such. I wrote about this in a forum on Graeber's and Wengrow's book: https://doi.org/10.30676/jfas.137823

The new issue of Roadsides includes also my photo essay "Roads, Marketplaces and Plantations". In the essay I discuss how unequal relations and struggles over them between plantation companies, workers and peasants are materialized in and enacted through food and infrastructure in #PapuaNewGuinea. https://www.roadsides.net/articles/8063 #oilPalm #plantation #anthropology #infrastructure #roads @anthropology@a.gup.pe

@ralf@r2.do And not just news outlets, but public institutions too. Especially, say, unis, which could automagically verify their staff/researchers. And no, totally not my idea. And as @Stoori@polyglot.city noted, it would be reasonable for publixöc institutions to have their own instances, instead of using volunteer-run infra.

@simonzerafa @micahflee Thanks for the mention, but despite my initials and handle, I have little to do with @Tutanota (now TutaMail) :) I do have an account both on Proton and Tuta, and while I have been very satisfied with the Proton ecosystem, these news are disheartening. Right now, trying to noy be too dependent on any single service due to enshitification, eggs, baskets and so on...
