@cstross we’re definitely experiencing a signal to noise problem. Lots of fragmentation certainly doesn’t help. The big social media services have all pretty much gone to shit. Are people actually making money from newsletter services like substack? Ad revenue is, well, elusive doesn’t really express how little it generates, and it’s very annoying. Love to see if someone has a magic bullet, but frankly I think it’s probably all luck or down to a good agent with the right contacts.

@C3nC3@social.tchncs.de @mjr@masto.bike @Edent@mastodon.social that was a rural Internet business. Unfortunately Elon came for it and deployed his VC hammer. It’s hard to make money when your competition doesn’t need to think about profitability.

@mjr@masto.bike @Edent@mastodon.social I know there’s a technical definition. But Jesus, just stop it already. No one wants that shit. When a lawyer asked why one of my sites had no cookie notice, and I simply told her there were no cookies, she actively disbelieved me.

Skid Row’s debut album might just be the best glam album of all time.

And yes, I was banned from ever singing 18 and Life again at Z Club karaoke.

So, it all makes sense. Ryan Atwood in the OC is actually Hyllus. Because his father is Kevin Sorbo, the greatest hero of all time.

Mind. Blown.

@mjr@masto.bike @Edent@mastodon.social TBF, I don’t see what most people actually get from the cookie world. Ad revenues are near nothing unless you’re very popular. We used a bit of Plausible code to measure basic stuff, and frankly it was more than enough analytics. And the kicker? Our (modest) social media spend had zero impact. But our (again, modest) traditional marketing, including print, was very effective. Maybe it was different before, but it’s all enshittified to the extreme now.

@Edent@mastodon.social more importantly, WTF is ‘legitimate interest’? Like, at the most basic level, shouldn’t all requests for data be based ok a ‘legitimate interest’?

@cstross@wandering.shop it is, as it also affects CloudNews (OSS reader for Nextcloud News). That app certainly has less dev time than Mail. But I use it less, as well. iOS 26 is not great for me. There should really be a way to downgrade.
